Anybody have any experience with these? I was thinking about buying one to start a new shooter and still be able to add extra calibers/barrels as we go along.

Got one. What did you want to know?

Barrel change can be done in a minute with a screwdriver, trigger is great, accuracy outstanding. Barrels available from .14 to .577 or so.

I'm sure you'll have folks coming in to recc the Encore over the Contender, so I'll take pre-emptive action and disagree. The Encore can take many cartridges that the Contender can't deal with (7mmRemMag, .308, etc.), but it doesn't really cover any _purpose_ that the Contender can't. Plus the Encore is nowhere near as handy as the Contender.

Since the T/C Contender has proven itself capable of taking every game species on Earth (many elephants taken w/ .375 JDJ barrels), and more and more T/C wildcats have gone mainstream, I'd say that the svelteness of the Contender gives it a clear lead over the Encore.

At the risk of shamelessly self-promoting, my collection of T/C Contender gear is up for sale (run a search under my username). No dissatisfaction with the T/C, it's just that I've moved to Ruger MkII for silhouette, and given up on hunting and reloading.

The coolest thing I liked doing with my T/C set: making a 5.5lb 16" 45-70 carbine that was just barely over minimum OAL. Sweetness....

My contender could outshoot high dollar rifles out of the box. It will probably be the best gun buy dollar for dollar you make. You will not be sorry.

i have an Encore and i think it's the greatest sporting implement ever devised. that said, you said your purpose was "buying one to start a new shooter." for that purpose you can't beat the contender for one major reason- RIMFIRE BARRELS. i plan on getting my daughter one when she reaches shooting age.

(yes you can get a rimfire adapter for an encore, but i've never heard how well they work.)

T/C G2 Rifle

I bought this with 17m2, 223 & 6.8 SPC barrels. I won't tell you how accurate it is for fear of being called a liar. It gets a little pricey when you're buying mounts/scopes for each barrel, but it is still cheaper than buying multiple guns and with each barrel scoped, it's a snap to swap & shoot.

Thanks for all your input. I have a contender pistol in 35 rem that I would like to use the frame for rifle. After reading this I might have to get some lager calibers for me to shoot as well. Looks like I need to accessorize. Would any one say that any one particular caliber is best in this gun or set up over another or are they all workable?

Since you already have a T/C Contender frame. getting another barrel makes sense.
HOWEVER, at the risk of flame replies from other T/C fans (and I also own a Contender with several barrels), you can buy a NEF rifle in a variety of calibers for less than you will pay for a T/C barrel. Having shot several, I can tell you that they shoot respectable groups. Not one holers but great hunting accuracy (1.5" at 100 yds). Great little rifles for the brand new shooter. A lot of rifle for the price.

Oldnamvet,

I am on a dedicated TC list, and those guys do get rather rabid when one brings up the evil empire, also known as H&R/NEF...me, I don't care...if it shoots, then its fun.

Had one old boy show up a VERY nice 24" custom shop 204 Ruger with a Nikon Monarch and handloads...HE was shooting a NEF handi- in 223 with a BSA scope and bipod...it wasn't pretty, I tell you. :D

MatthewVanitas,

I hear you on the 45-70...I have a bone-crusher, too.

I just bought a T/C Contender G2 rifle in 375JDJ to go along with my hunting pistol of the same caliber. I haven't had time to break the barrel in but will in the spring.

in the old style contender is 45-70 probably the most potent caliber? Is there another caliber that would be suitable for elk in some of those wildcats?

Go to the above web site for various wildcats built up on the Contender frame. Mike Bellm is well known for getting the most out of the Contender both in terms of functionality and accuracy. He has a couple of calibers suitable for elk hunting.
