I want to build a Tactical long range rifle off of a Remington 700 action. I will probably put it on a McMillin stock or an AICS. The scope will most likely be a NightForce. Where can I get a good 700 action? Who makes the best trigger for the 700. But, most important WHO MAKES THE BEST BARREL OUT THERE? I want the best barrel money can buy on this rifle.

Thanks in Advance guys.;)

You really hung up on the Remington? By the time you start doing what you talk about here you are up into some off the shelf high end rifle prices.

Zak Smith has the best article you'll find on this stuff.

His statement that your equipment costs will be nothing compared to ammo and training to get good with it really got my attention.

The AI-AE seems more reasonable a place to start, to me anyway.

$3200 in .308. That seems close to what building up a Remmy would cost in stock, barrels, magazine mods, trigger, etc. The AICS chassis alone is $1000.

If you really want .300 I think the AW is the choice. Don't believe you can get the AE in .300.
Maybe Zak will chime in, he always has the best advice on this stuff.

That's what I am looking at anyway. I was thinking the Remington til reading his articles.

I ran some numbers and the AI just keeps coming out ahead for the price and ease of getting it all put together.

I am no expert, I don't even own a gun like this, so take that for what it's worth :)

Read the article. It's helpful.

Nothing wrong with an "entry level" Remington.

But better equipment helps to remove barriers to learning.

How much is your time worth?
