I was looking for some possibilities in protecting home defense weapons (if one were to possess them) and I came across this:

http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/gunsafes/detail.asp?value=003F&cat_id=160&type_id=48562

I know the cynical in many of us would say that this just a marketing gimmick, but I can see a real need to properly store shorter barrel shotguns and pistols for defensive purposes.

The Browning Tactical gun safe advertises a more efficient storage system, but it seems to be larger and more expensive then what I would expect. In a home defense situation, speed and ease of use is probably the most important criteria. A tactical safe shouldn't necessary hold all your firearms, just those that you need at a moments notice. Of course it must provide some burglary/fire protection.

Besides the usual electronic keypad, a reliable Biometric lock system would add to the speed of entry.

I was wondering what other members here have found or considered getting for their home defense guns (if anything)?

Thanks.

Unless you are planning to put something above it, wont the height always be a limiting factor? IE anything longer that the safe wont fit. The extra few inches aren't that critical in the Vertical direction.....?????:scrutiny:

It is tactical because it is shorter..... hmmmmmm I'll have to tell my wife that one...

Well I can certainly see the need to build the gun safe for weapons specific cause or a product specific cause such as expensive guitars, camera equipment, pistols, etc.
But they want way too much money for a basically not so thick 11 gauge gun safe.
Good idea, but uses wrong material specs in the final product imho.

I have to admit that the first thing that came to mind when I read the title was an image of my safe with a bunch of mounting rails on the outside.

Exactly. Where's the rails to lock all the optics and stuff on the outside to show them off?

It's tall - a tactical safe would be low to fit in a Hummer or pickup, have tie down points, and the rack could hold camo netting or rucksacks. THAT would be tactical.

THIS is tacticool.

If I mount shower grab bars on the top of a freezer and paint it black, could you tell the difference?

Well, yeah. It would have grab bars and black paint.
To be really a tactical fridge, you have to take out the light, so it doesn't give away your position when you open the door!

I could see this being good for someone that needs a smaller safe. I'd have to build a stand underneath it though to get it way off the ground. I hate bending over to get anything.

I'm not sure why it's "tactical" other than because it's black?

I think the tactical fridge should have a red christmas bulb mounted inside. That way when I need to get a snack or read the map to the bathroom at night, I can do so without sacrificing my nightvision.

I am a marine version. I am waterproof.

I wish to God I could afford a safe. Someone in the next town over was robbed when they were on vacation. The safe was stolen. I am so poor that not only can I not afford a safe, I cannot afford a vacation either so I am "safe"...

If I could though, it would be the ugliest cheapest one I could find!

Besides, that safe is worth more then all off my guns, accessories and ammo combined. And I have over 10 guns.... lol

Well...I can't even comment now...all I can think about is some dude with a flashlight mounted.

Never underestimate a good sales gimmick. I like the idea of a tacticool mini-frig, I'll have to do that just because, but this.. c'mon

I have seen this safe up close and the quality imo is not where it should be for the price.

I just bought a Browning safe and looked this over in the shop. I like the idea that its shorter as much of what I like to shoot is short be it SBS, SBR or other. Most of the safes out there are too damn tall for these type guns.

The overall look and price turned me off. Im also more concerned about door/door frame construction that guage. No one is going to take the time to cut a safe open unless they think they have unlimited time and no one will hear.

BTW, it actually has rails mounted inside for scopes and other trinkets.:scrutiny:

.

"...more expensive then what I would expect..." Has two things that drive the price up. The Browning name on it and the word 'tactical'.
There's no such thing as a tactical anything. It's a marketing term only.

It also has external hinges. :barf:

Actually, if the bolts and locking mechanisms are implemented correctly (as would be the case on any *quality* safe these days) this is a total non-issue because the hinge has ZERO impact on the security of the safe.

In fact, some safes with 180 degree doors can only open that far BECAUSE of the external hinges.
