Came home from the Gym today and saw an unfamiliar car across the street. Not running, lights left on. After performing the three 'S's, I saw the car was still there. Went next door, thinking that it was a guest of the neighbor's (I live at the end of the street, empty field across the street)....nope....she tells me that the driver was still in the car, with the seat back, apparently asleep. I was armed with my Ruger Security Six .357, spare speedloader, pocket folder, cellphone.
It's twilight, and lightly snowing outside.

Now....What would you do?

Me...I called the Police :neener:
Non-emergency number, gave them the car color, make, model, and plate number. When I returned home about 20 minutes later...it was gone.
No Mall Ninja Jack-assery from me.....
:neener:

I woulda told the guy that his lights were on and to turn them off lest he drain his battery and wanted to take a tow truck home.

I've taken combat naps in front of my friends' place before. (Duke of Lawnchair!!!! You lagger!!! :D ) Seriously you could have sized up his attitude by conducting a field interview with a veneer of Samaritan helpfulness. How was the parking on your street? Filled with cars or just a few?

Very few cars parked on the street....we've all got big driveways and 2 car garages on this road. Also, being winter, you can get ticketed for parking overnight on the street, as it interferes with snowplows. The empty lot across the street is really about 4 lots. I'm the last house on the corner, and my street is just off a major street. Probably some working stiff taking a power nap after getting up too early, but I wasn't about to go head-to-head against some meth-addict crashing after 4 days awake....that's the Cops' Job.

Call the Police and observe from a distance. Wait for the them to check it out and send the napping beauty on his way.

I'll give you an A+ for this class.
#1.You observed.
#2.You investigated safely.
#3.You let the cops handle it.
Might have been better to call neighbor on cellphone while
observing strange car,but that's a VERY minor quibble.

Tactical "what if" at 6:22 AM? Dammit. It's too early for that. I guess fire a few round in the general direction of the grizzly bear and lock the door. The shots should get someone else to call the police. Stumble back to bed.

How'd I do? :D

I used to live on a cul-de-sac and every so often a car (sometimes a mini-van) would be out in front of my house and I'd see a man and a woman in the back seat.

Well, it was obvious to me what they were doing. A few times I'd just walk down to the mailbox and make stern looking faces towards the car's windows. Didn't usually phase them.

Finally I got fed up with it and called the cops. They arrived and hoisted both of them out of the car, clothed. Apparantly, an older guy (30ish) had taken a liking to a girl (under 18) from the street behind mine and they would "park" here and "talk" or "play cards." They evidently weren't doing anything bad when the cops rolled up or this guy would have been arrested I suppose.

Anyway, turns out mom didn't approve of the daughter's boyfriend so they had to sneak around. The girl walked home with a patrol car escort and the guy drove away. Officer's "recommended" he not see her again. I never saw them again so who knows, maybe they found a new place to park.

He should buy the little curtains that the other vans have :D

Clearly the only option would be to take cover and open fire on the car. Aim for the wheels and engine to disable any getaways. Then combat roll to the rear of the car and plant a small ammount of plastic explosives. Then lay down some fire to make an escape path. Once clear of the blast area detonate the bomb. Then carefully search the wreckage for any survivors to interogate.

Its really the only way to be sure. ;)

Don't forget to pop a smoke grenade first....

Every so often, the St. Louis police try to shut down the local gay stroll portion of Forest Park, which is next to the art museum and the golf course, so occasionally someone who isn't used to that sorta thing gets offended and calls 911...

When that happens, they move to residential neighborhoods around the park.

Sheesh.

Hmmm, I'm concerned about the lack of bear tracks in the snow.:uhoh:

It's the bear you can't see that worries me. No doubt the bears were hiding in the trunk.

I would have done the following: Make green tea, log onto THR, post poll about "which rifle to shoot bears riding in cars with", put on tin foil hat, sip green tea as poll results flooded in.;)

Just so you know, I almost posted a new thread/poll with that very question. Wonder what the others not reading this thread would think of that....

<edit, nevermind, it wasn't funny>

Your call on walking up to the car. Could be a power-napper, could be a Meth Fiend. (though generally the condition of the car *can* tell you something. Of course, it could just be that he's a messy college student. Leaving it the hell alone and letting the cops sort it out perfectly valid option too.

I have taken 15min naps on the side of the road when driving long distances. Much better than falling asleep at the wheel!

<Mr. Serious off>
Empty a BetaC mag into the general direction of the car, while you break contact and call in the fast movers. It's the only way to be sure!
<Mr. Serious back on>

I usually

take pictures of loiterers, with a flash.

Even if they don't come out, the flash gets people to move along promptly.

I really wasn't looking for confrontation....and loitering isn't generally a problem on my street, as its a residential area with nothing that draws people in from outside the area (Except the dollar theater two blocks away).

The person in the car could have also been a LEO working narcotics, investigations, etc. The best thing would be to call it in to the dispatch center. They are going to know, or should know, if one of their units are there. Unless, of course, it is the feds, or some other task force no one knows about...

Atc1man...

"Now....What would you do?"

Exactly what YOU did.

I don't have the reference immediately available but their is a thread here about labgrade and the trouble he got in wandering into a tense situation without knowing what was going on. Tactical awareness is paramount - ESPECIALLY when you are outside your own area and you don't know what is happening.

If the person looked peaceful I'd tap on his window with a smile and let him know he left his lights on. I pulled over for a quick nap once, so danged tired I forgot to turn the lights off. Waking up to a dead battery with someplace to be turned out to be a really bad thing for me.

If the person didn't look honest I'd leave him alone unless he was parked on my property.
