A good friend and I were in discussion this morning about handgunnery and carry. I brought up that if I had a SAA in .45 Colt, and it was all I had; I would carry it. He plum laughed at me. To my face. I was kinda offended at this, and asked him what he thought was funny about a 255 grn LSWCHP or Hornady Critical Defense to the torso ? He made a comment to the affect of "Glock 19 and two spare mags". Tacticool Idiots like this... annoy me. I'm not a Navy SEAL in the middle of a warzone in Peshawar, I'm not an LEO who just kicked down the door of a drug den. It's not my duty to run towards trouble. I have absolutely *no* civil, legal, or moral (moral part is debatable) obligation to charge headfirst into the line of fire. Get me, get mine; get out of the situation. Wannabe heroes tend to die an early, quick, and gruesome death.

Carry whatever the heck pleases you. It makes no difference to me. But this elitist "wannabe hero" attitude... this mannerism... it is part of what does not endear the gun community to the rest of the country. There are *some* situations where I would rather have a .45 Colt SAA than a G19 and ten quadrillion cartridges.

If all you have is a one shot .31 cal black powder derringer... carry it if your comfortable with it. If you see the need to carry a G19, 4 spare mags, a BUG, and a rifle shoved down your pants, more power to you- but snobbery and elitism and shaming is absolutely unnecessary.

I have taught many people the fundamentals of marksmanship. I always made it clear I would rather someone carry a 2 shot derringer they were good with than a Glock with a 30 round magazine they can't hit the broadside of a barn with. I had a student that carried a Glock 22 for a few years who brought it to class. I asked her to shoot at a target 10 yards away. 2 magazines, not a single round on the paper. She carried the Glock 22 because it is what the local cops carry and she got a good price on it.

I agree. There's many that think they have to be outfitted to the max. So be it!! If that puts them in there comfort zone then by all means carry on... but please don't openly criticize others that choose to go a different route.

Me *personally*, I'd rather a S&W Mdl 10 I can stack dimes with, than a G19 that I can't hit a torso target with at 7 yds. And yes, that is the truth

In one article written by Even Marshall he stated he would rather face the typical Street Creep armed with an Uzi than a PPC Champ armed with a 38 snub. Sounds good to me.

I have a friend that at last count several years ago he owned 26 top of the line guitars most American made Stratocasters but he has never reached beyond an intermediate beginner in skill level. All the tools in the world won't make you an expert in any field.

Forgot to add that my bud has a first gen Glock 17 and that gun is accurate as all get out. I have shot it a bit and liked what I saw. One of our targets is a metal pole like metal pipe fence is made from that is stuck in the ground on the far side of his pond. We shoot it off hand at 90 yards. If we don't hit it the misses are very close. The pipe is 3.5" in diameter. I saw him ring that pipe 5 out of 8 shots with a Makarov at 90 yards. Sometimes its the shooter and not the gun.

See Ma, there are level headed individuals on this here forum.

One noted gun writer and instructor at a nationally recognized self defense academy once wrote. Paraphrased here in this page.
If one finds ones self in a situation where six rounds aren't getting the job done, your either in way over your head or need to go back to the range.

If it's all you have, that'd be great.

Only hangup I'd have, other than concealment, is having to remember to work the hammer back in the midst of a dust-up, same reason I got a DA revolver when I liv d in bear country over the much preferred SAA style.

The gun would put them on target and .45 LC would get it done, that's for sure.

But I'd prefer a Glock 19 I can stack dimes with, because my Gen 5 does it as well as anything else under 20 yards for me.

Aye. Your comfortable and capable with it, more power to ya.

I know of no "noted" or nationally recognized" instructors who would so contend.

If, and only if, one happened to score effective hits timely.

Do not conflate the splash of a water jug or the impact on a steel plate with wounding effectiveness.

If I was going out to purchase a firearm who’s main purpose above all was defense I generally want at least 8+1 in a semi automatic. Likely a Glock 19 sized 9mm, .40 or .45.

That said to think I would be fundamentally unarmed with a Colt SAA is ludicrous. I have a wide variety of firearm experience and frankly a black powder muzzle loaded revolver would make for a pretty capable self defense tool in practiced hands.

People get hung up on tools and forget they are just the middle element between the fighter and the threat with the fighter being the most important factor.

Folks also need to understand that in many cases even with multiple assailants most folks realize they have someplace else to be NOW as soon as bullets start flying and there is a lot of tactics RUN AWAY.

Point is people haven’t changed. I would argue me charging a home invader with a bayoneted Brown Bess would have fair chance of effectively stopping the problem.

So point is sure use the best tool you have access too but don’t think somebody with an “inadequate” tool in your mind is unarmed. Would you blow off a home invader armed with a rusty single action army???? I wouldn’t.
