At the 2013 SHOT show, there was a company by the name of Nemesis Arms or something like that. They were showcasing a bolt action rifle that could quickly break down to fit a suit case. I would love to have one but can't afford to spare $4,000 to buy one. Is there a long range centerfire rifle, either semi or bolt, that could fill this bill?

I'm thinking about a take down bolt action with a 16" barrel and a folding stock but I don't know what's out there (beyond an Jap Arisaka like in Dirty Harry).

How hard would it be for a machinist to make a quick detach barrel for something like a Savage with it's seperate barrel retaining nut if a take down bolt action isn't common?

This rifle would be for novelty purposes in case someone was wondering. I'm not someone that belongs in a Bond film.;)

Well, Accuracy International had this:

Cost a bit more than you're talking about though.

I know its been done already, I'm just looking for an alternative that doesn't cost a few thousand dollars.

The BLR is a possibility but I'm leaning more towards a bolt or semi.

I've heard about that kind of system with an AR but I both lack one and would prefer a caliber better suited for long range precision work.

Does anyone know how hard it would be to work off of a Savage? I think its easily doable with the barrel nut.

seems to me that most any suitcase should be able to hold an ar complete upper.

In my research (I did a lot, I have an odd storage need) I found to get the length I needed (< 20") I had to remove the barrel. That left me all options that had barrel nuts and non pressed in barrels (I suppose one could have a threaded barrel and not a nut, now we're involving a vice or barrel clamp.)

So, that means: Uzi and feather industries (carbines), Savage bolt action (and Mossberg), converted Remington 700 actions, AR15 based (Tac 2, MGI Hydra, TNW had one for a while, LMT) and AR10 types LMT, 2013 Larue.

Winchester has a takedown leveraction in 450 marlin that is great looking. Wild West Guns can make you a really nice lever action.

Also, the Styer AUG breaks down quite small. I would go that route had I not wanted multiple calibers.

As it is I think the 6.8 SPC/6.5 Grendel can go far enough for me, and I like to shoot cheap 22 when I can so I went with an AR build.

I have decided that I want it to be a bolt action. I clarified it in the first post now.

Get a TC Dimension that will not break the bank. Or a Dakota Arms Traveler or a Blaser...for a bajillion dollars.

20" takedown in 7-08 (even better 6.5 swede) stainless with iron sights would be my ideal. Yes Yes BLR--what they say about the trigger scares me off.

How much are those TC's going for? That looks good, I would just have to make a folding stock for it. Does it require tools to change the barrel?

It's looking like I can make one with my Savage using interrupted threads. The next step would be to get a folding stock or one with a detachable buttstock.

Maybe they make suitcases smaller these days, but when Smsonite was using the Gorillas in the zoo fro sales reps I used to toss a mini 14 broke down from its choate folder and a couple of magazines in a black semi soft Samsonite for long road trips.

You did not specify what you meant by long range and a Mini is longer ranging than most handguns.

Wish I still had that one just to walk around a gunshow to see what folks would offer for it at the moment.....I am such a tease!

Back when the first AW ban was struggling in the states and cities before the Clintoniestas managed to go federal with it the Govenor of Florida came out in favor of banning assault weapons. As it turned out his turkey rifle was in the shop at his Tallahassee gunsmith. Said gunsmith got ticked and allowed someone to take pictures of the governor's turkey gun, a factory folder Ruger Mini14 all covered in camo tape and out fitted with a 30 rounder.

All animals are equal but some are more equal than others....

Did I mention handguns? No I didn't. I'm looking for a bolt gun, not a semi auto. Read the whole thread before posting.

527,

Sorry if I offended you some how.

Actually you did meantion semis in your original post and semis have been meantioned by others in the thread.

I was mearly pointing out that "long range" is subjective, not impling that you were considering a handgun. Some folks consider anything more than the 25 or 35 yards they might game with a handgun "long range", other might think of handguns as 100 yard weapons from the role over prone so anything beyound 100 yards "long range" and others shoot steel silhueta out past Ft. Mudge so don't think of anything less than 300 yards as "long range"

Also I thought the Dirty Harry Arisaka was the breaks in the middle type of 7.7 that used a turn and keyed barrel to reciever lock up rather than the house door hinge affair that was not liked by Japanese Paratroopers in Sumatra.

Does anyone make a folding buttstock for the Blaser series of modern switch barrel rifles?

I wonder if one might make a break down from a Savage 110 type action. If there is already a folding stock out there some sort of spaner for the barrel lock nut and index marks might do it. Choose your action size and caliber and cutt and recrown or thread and accessorize your barrel to your hearts content.

Sorry that I came off harsh, didn't mean to.

Here it shows the rifle used in Dirty Harry. I would love to set my rifle up to have interrupted threads for a quick on and off but till I could do that, I'll use index marks like you said. What is a spanner for the barrel nut? If I can't find a folding stock, I will see what I can do in making my own.

I carry my AR broken down in a largish backpack. It would fit in most any suit case. Now if you are really wanting something to fit in the size of a briefcase, that's entirely different.
