Talk about under penetrating!

This is a bit old but due to circumstances beyond my control I have not been able to get by to see the guy since early in March.
On Friday I took the gun and the 135+ pieces of ammo back for him to look at. He was curious so we went in the back and he began pulling bullets. After he had pulled about 20 it was apparent that every round had the correct amount of powder so he asked me to leave the rest and he would go through them over the weekend. I went back this morning and he had disassembled every one and didn't find a single round that was under or overcharged. He told me he used a Hodgdon powder and did not have any of that particular container left to play with but the powder he had pulled out of these bullets "smelled sour". As a noob to reloading I have never smelled sour gunpowder but I will take his word for it.
This was good news to me since I have a lot of his rifle reloads and have literally used thousands of them over the past decades without an issue. He fixed my gun and threw in enough ammo cans to offset what I spent on the 9x18 ammo.

It smells somewhat like ammonia to me. Probably because deteriorating nitrocellulose breaks down into acidic nitrogen compounds, whereas ammonia is a nitrogen base. (Nitric Acid is HNO3, Ammonia is NH3.)

when you get a squib load just remember, the gunpowder that didn't go into that round went into another. so somewhere he has made a double charged round.

If he was using old/bad powder to load ammunition for sale, that's not good.

Good thing nothing bad happened other than the squib round you caught. I wonder if he sold the same ammunition to other customers ... If it was me, I would not buy any reloads, especially not after something like this.

I not only don't trust reloads I didn't load myself but have known to pull even the rounds I loaded myself on occasion. We are human and we all make mistakes. ;)
