Tapco muzzle device for AKs?

Money separation device....

But if you like the looks, go for it, it probably won't harm anything. Other than the way people look at you at the range.

Why would some people disapprove of these?
Because some folks only buy stuff that provides a beneficial function for their weapons. To these folks, "looks cool on my gun" isn't a qualifier.

Tapco products tend to be an "aesthetic" purchase.

Well, first, let me defend Tapco. Everything I put on my SKS from them works great. The muzzle brake actually significantly reduces felt recoil. They are the only hi-caps that work well in my gun.

Having said that, I look at this device, and it looks like it was specifically designed to snag things and unintentionally injure the user. Your call. :)

It looks somewhat like the Smith Vortex flash hider, which is supposedly pretty effective. On the other hand, I'm told the Vortex rings like a tuning fork when you fire your rifle, so I don't know that I'd want it. On a .30 cal rifle you'd probably be better served by a break than a flash hider.

"Looks" ≠ function.

The Vortex is a pretty good flash hider. The Tapco job "looks" neat.

Am I the only one who likes these? I must have strange taste in accessories. At least I saw one other guy on youtube who likes them.

If you want it because you like it, go for it. If you want it to be validated by other people liking it, well, you've got a surprise coming.

If you want something functional for an AKM, the AK-74 style brake works quite well, and even the TAPCO model is functional (based on my personal testing of one, compared back to back to a slant "brake" and to a genuine AK-100 series brake). There's also the PWS AK brake that might be a little better still, for 2-3x more money.

I am gonna go with the Razr model. I am planning to get another rifle in the future and I will use the AK-74 style brake on that rifle. I shoot on a private range so no one is going to see it anyway. I was just curious about what other AK fans think.

I just switched to the Tapco slot brake from the AK-74 style brake. Haven't shot it since the swap, though this one lets me attach my bayonet still.

Go for it man, when I did mine on my SKS, I had to knock out a roll pin, and I needed to put it in a barrel vise and wrench to get the old device off, I was worried about the barrel twisting, it took so much force. Put the new one on with some loc-tite and don't worry about it.

On a standard AKM no tools - NO TOOLS - are needed to change the muzzle device, you just push a little spring-loaded detent in with your finger and unscrew the existing device by hand. Screw the new one in by hand until the detent locks it in place. Done. Not sure why they made it so easy, but I'm not complaining.

C'mon man, a muzzle nut or bare muzzle beats a slant brake

Just about!

Thanks sturmgewehr. I am a subscriber to your youtube channel (under a different screen name). I really like the review vids. You influenced me to eventually get the Midwest industries/US Palm rail system for AK's. The Draco looks great.

I have the Tapco Razr on my AK-47 at the moment, and when shooting it, it reduces almost all recoil. Whether or not it is worth the extra $$ is up to you, but I feel that the $25 I paid for mine was well worth it.

As far as using the brake to "Punch through wood, sheet rock, and glass," (as the website claims); even if it is capable of it, what ever you punch through is going to leave a 'plug' in the end of your barrel preventing firing of the gun.:uhoh: Not the smartest thing I've heard of.

So as a muzzle brake, it works perfectly for me. As an 'improvised bayonet', maybe not...

@ Gordon:
The theory I heard was that it messes with harmonics because it clamps to the barrel. Nutnfancy made this comment and I've heard it from others online as well (although it's impossible to know if they were just parroting Nutn). If it works for you I say go for it. I'm just reluctant compromise my accuracy, or add extra weight to the front of the rifle for that matter.

Nutnfancy certainly isn't the end-all authority on guns, but I think he gets too much criticism. The guy clearly shoots guns a lot, guns of all kinds, and he has hundreds of videos to prove it. He showed his groups with the Midwest Industries rail installed, then again with a normal handguard installed, and there was a significant difference. It's hard to say whether that was just a poor install of the handguard, or a lemon, or a bad fit for the shooter, or just random chance, but it's the only evidence I have to judge the product without actually buying it myself. Granted, I'm not really after a railed AK handguard so it's a moot point in my case.

I agree Effigy. I think Nutnfancy has a lot of credibility because he shoots a lot of different guns and has a lot of experience shooting. He is also in the military. I'll have to check on what he said about the midwest industry rail and do more research before buying one.
