1. Is it currently possible to buy all U.S. made parts for the AK 47, every last little part?

2. This might also make a nice shopping list of where to go, even if we can't fill out all the parts…. (If there are no US makers, fill in what is available if you know of something, copy the list and update it, if you want.)

I’ll Start with the 922 list plus what I can come up with:

1. Barrel = ?
2. Receiver = Yes, ?
3. Front and Rear Trunions (Applies to stamped receivers only) = ?
4. Bolt Carrier = ?
5. Bolt = ?
6. Gas Piston = Yes, Tapco
7. Butt stock = Yes, Kvar, Tapco, Ironwood
8. Pistol Grip = Yes, Kvar, Tapco, Ironwood
9. Upper and Lower Hand guards (Both count as 1 part)= Yes, Kvar, Tapco, Ironwood
10. Muzzle Device = Yes, Tapco & Others
11. Hammer = Yes, G2, Red Star, (Tapco?)
12. Trigger = Yes, G2, Red Star, (Tapco?)
13. Disconnector = Yes, G2, Red Star, (Tapco?)
14. Magazine Body = ? (Promag?)?
15. Magazine Follower = ? (Promag?)
16. Magazine Floor plate = ? (Promag?)

Retaining Pins & Rivets = ?
Safety Lever = ?
Trigger Guard = ?
Butt Plate = ?
Pistol Grip Screw = ? (Tapco?)
Dust cover = ?
Springs (Main, Trigger Group, Magazine, etc.) = (Are wolf springs made in USA?)
Rear sight & Assembly = ?
Front sight & Assembly = ?

I think everything is available here, or a close facsimile thereof. I know for a fact that Century Arms International has a local supplier of AK barrels. No idea who, though. Only things I'm not certain about are the safety lever, bolt, and bolt carrier. Other things have known suppliers.

I’ll Start with the 922 list plus what I can come up with:

1. Barrel = Yes, it's like Green River Arms or something like that
2. Receiver = Yes, several brands

3. Front and Rear Trunions (Applies to stamped receivers only) = No
4. Bolt Carrier = No
5. Bolt = No

6. Gas Piston = Yes, Tapco and Arsenal
7. Butt stock = Yes, Kvar, Tapco, Ironwood
8. Pistol Grip = Yes, Kvar, Tapco, Ironwood
9. Upper and Lower Hand guards (Both count as 1 part)= Yes, Kvar, Tapco, Ironwood
10. Muzzle Device = Yes, Tapco & Others
11. Hammer = Yes, G2, Red Star, Tapco (G2 is tapco), Arsenal
12. Trigger = Yes, G2, Red Star, Tapco (G2 is tapco), Arsenal
13. Disconnector = Yes, G2, Red Star, Tapco (G2 is tapco), Arsenal
14. Magazine Body = Yes, Promag
15. Magazine Follower = Yes, Promag, and others but hard to find
16. Magazine Floor plate = Yes, Promag, and others but hard to find

Retaining Pins & Rivets = Doubt it
Safety Lever = No
Trigger Guard = No
Butt Plate = No, unless it comes on a butt stock

Pistol Grip Screw = I don't know. I think so though
Dust cover = No
Springs (Main, Trigger Group, Magazine, etc.) = No
Rear sight & Assembly = Probably some
Front sight & Assembly = No

Key:
Yes
No
Maybe

Fact if the matter is that US made AK parts suck, so if you were to be able to make an all US parts AK, it would be a piece of junk. Promags are horrible, btw.

Tapco also makes a mag follower. I'd love to see someone make a follower with the bolt hold open feature like the Yugo mags.

The "rear trunnion" is not a countable part under 922. Technically it's not a trunnion at all.

The above lists do not cover all the vendors with the listed items.

Bolt carriers, rear sight blocks, gas blocks, bolts, buttplates, barrel trunnions and rear blocks are not made here commercially. Some of the aforementioned are not 922r countable.

Rivets are available here, but do not count toward 922r.

I always thought the list of which parts count toward 922 and which don't was odd. The magazine counts as three parts (body, base, and follower), but important parts like the main spring, dust cover, and safety don't.

I know there's at least one company that makes bolt carriers because there's a company that makes AK carriers with a left side cocking knob. Not modified original carriers, but new US-made carriers.

Colorado Shooting Sports makes the "Lightning Bolt" -- but it's not clear from their website (including reviews from customers) if they actually build an American bolt carrier, or are just doing very professional conversions of foreign made carriers. (They will modify your weapon's bolt carrier if you send it to them, so they've at least got a sideline in modification rather than fabrication.)

Nowhere on their site do they mention the Lightning Bolt counting as a 922r part, which may indicate it's not US made or may just be an oversight on their part.

They do a really nice product -- if you check the reviews section, though, there's a review from Sherman House, one of the instructors at Tactical Response in TN, and it sounds like he thinks he was provided a very well remanufactured bolt carrier to test out. But, I may be wrong -- it is definitely a professional looking bolt carrier one way or another.

If anyone's really interested, I'm guessing they'd clarify either way on an email to them.

They advertise the AK47C as 100% US. I'm not sure if it's true or if they mean assembled.
The law states that any non-importable long gun with 10 or less foreign parts in it can now be legally considered "US Made" (and not barred from import). Just a side effect of a stupid law.

The "Lightning Bolt" may be a brand new bolt carrier, but it is not US made. If it were, the cost would be astronomical.

How it is:

1. Barrel = YES, Green Mountain
2. Receiver = YES, Nodak,Firingline, ect...
3. Front and Rear Trunions = Rears are sometimes availible, but not ever fronts. Turbothis/mygunsnorthwest, still forign counted if the front isn't US made though
4. Bolt Carrier = NO
5. Bolt = NO
6. Gas Piston = YES, tapco ect..
7. Butt stock = YES, Kvar, Tapco, Ironwood
8. Pistol Grip = YES, Kvar, Tapco, Ironwood
9. Upper and Lower Hand guards (Both count as 1 part)= YES, Kvar, Tapco, Ironwood
10. Muzzle Device = YES, Tapco & Others
11. Hammer = YES, G2, Red Star, (Tapco?)
12. Trigger = YES, G2, Red Star, (Tapco?)
13. Disconnector = YES, G2, Red Star, (Tapco?)
14. Magazine Body = YES, promag, tapco
15. Magazine Follower = YES arsenal, promag, tapco
16. Magazine Floor plate = YES arsenal, promag, tapco

Retaining Pins & Rivets = YES
Safety Lever = YES, blackjack
Trigger Guard = NO, easily fabbed from folded sheet though
Butt Plate = YES, arsenal
Pistol Grip Screw = YES
Dust cover = NO
Springs (Main, Trigger Group, Magazine, etc.) = YES
Rear sight & Assembly = NO
Front sight & Assembly = YES, Blackthorne/hesse

That pretty much everything but the bolt, carrier and front trunion. Which are probibly going to be the three most expensive parts of the gun as they take a lot of operations to machine.

Per the ATF,If the RIFLE itself meets 922(r) then it is US made, if not then it is not US made. Hence interordance's "US Made" AK's and PSL's when the US made bolts, carriers, and front trunions (not to mention sight bases, sights and small parts) do not exist.

Updates in blue and links.

If I make front trunions, is there really a market for them?

I recently bought a large production CNC mill.

I've been trying to find a popular, relatively inexpensive, product to make that is not already being done.

I also have the equipment and programming to make superior quality AK barrels.

I'm thinking of making a set, NEW barrel and NEW trunion.
This makes proper assembly a lot easier, no more trying to set head-space and hope the existing barrel pin hole still lines up too.

Two additional U.S. parts!

Trunions are harder to make than barrels, if I make them, will they sell?
What is the estimated price limitation?
These are not simple parts, they cannot be U.S. made at the same price as the imported pieces.

You might want to consider making Yugo underfolder rear trunnions. There were thousands of these stocks available in the last couple years, and "front halves" also, but no trunnions for whatever reason. I've been away from AKs for a bit now, but last I knew, there were MANY people looking for the Yugo trunnions.

I know I could use one..

I always thought the list of which parts count toward 922 and which don't was odd. The magazine counts as three parts (body, base, and follower), but important parts like the main spring, dust cover, and safety don't.

Was there ever ANYTHING about it that DID make sense?

At some point the entire AK will have to be U.S. made.

Eventually there will be no more kits, or such onerous restrictions that importing "kits" will no longer be practical.
Just look at the impact the Gonzalez barrel ban has had.

I'm trying to collect sources for any and all U.S. made parts, weather they count toward 922.(r) or not.

So far this has been the most useful thread on the 'net! :)
