Target rifle caliber?

Yes, absolutely (M96 and M38 Swedes), and that was actually my number one caliber choice, though finding a barrelled action in that caliber within my budget was either not possible or not available. So the end product rifle was a combination of multiple compromises, and actually turned out to perform fairly well, at least for a "starter". If in the future I want to blow a wad on this activity, I'll be looking for a 6.5x55 Swede Tikka with a heavy varmint-profile barrel.

Nice...I own both those Swedes too. My one and only Tikka is a .308 Scout CTR. If I knew today what I knew then, I would have bought the 6.5x55 instead. I felt I should own at least one .308. Oh well!

Have four friends that shoot deer off of peanut fields, with a state issued predation permit. They all use rifles in 223 with 80gr SMKs. Fields marked from a picnic table on a ridge, every 50 yards out to 800. That 80 is accurate and surprisingly effective on deer for a paper puncher, pretty much like an arrow.

I shoot a Winchester M70 EW and a Kimber 84M Classic Select both in .308. I am fortunate that both rifles love the same hand load (150 SST, 43.5 Varget, WW brass and LRP) - both rifles have the same glass (Leupold VX 3i 3.5-10x40). The longest range I have available is 200 yards so my challenge is to shoot 5 shots touching at that range. I am old, I have cataracts in both eyes - my vision is poor and will be poor until I have the surgery.
With this standard type, off-the-shelf common equipment, bad eyes and all, I can consistently touch three rounds on the center “X” in a 3” orange dot with two other rounds within 1/16” to 1/4” of the touching three at 200 yards - great shooting but I still have yet to touch all five rounds.
My point is that the common denominator of this shooting is 1) me and 2) hand loading. These rifles in this caliber that shoot extremely well have nothing in common other than 1) me and 2) hand loads. I am pretty confident that I can meet my goal (five rounds touching at 200 yards) after a successful cataract surgery.
We tend to concentrate on rifle brands and calibers - my experience has always been that my best shooting is 1) me and 2) tuned hand loads. I am not sure that we talk about these enough - rifle brand and caliber are just two of many components of very tiny groups.
