A buddy of mines father recently passed away he had a Taurus 1911 and Mossberg 500. My friend contacted me to see if I wanted to buy them. I'm interested in the 1911 but I don't really know anything about Taurus 1911. What would it be worth and do they have any problems?

Buy the mossy for around 250 bucks used and the taurus would depend on the caliber and price. 350 sound about right. You can buy a RIA tactical for mit 460 and that is a shooter.
The Taurus 1911 isn't a bad firearm.
I own one in .38 Super and hasn't malfunctioned on me once. I only have about 120-150 rounds thru of it of my reloads but she never failed once in either of the two mags I used that came with the firearm.
Around here, The SS version is going for $600 and up. I have seen a pawn shop have it at $800 bucks and said no way! The blued one is going for $500 used at a LGS I frequent. Been there for about a month and a half still. As for your friends 1911, I think maximum would be $400.

I had a blued one. It ate everything I threw at it without a hiccup, and other folks shot it very accurately. I sold it because I can't hit the broad side of the barn with a 45. I'm recoil shy. Only problem I had with it was that the left hand part of the ambi safety wiggled loose after a while. I think it was soft metal or something.
I would expect that gun to sell for 500+ in good condition. I would buy it in a heartbeat for 400, and anything less I think you are taking advantage of your friend.

Looked at one when I was looking for a 1911. Wasn't going to buy one but it didn't look too bad. Price was a little over $500 for a new one. I'd say $300 - $400 max is about right

from what I can see they're running almost $700 new after tax, ffl, shipping or whatever you have to pay. Used ones seem to be running around 600. if you figure 20% discount for a used gun you're still at $560. When was the last time you saw guns selling for 1/2 the price of a new one? Don't screw your friend while he is mourning the loss of his father.

My PT1911AL works like a champ...that pic appears to be a two tone polished flats blackened pistol of the earlier Heinie (non Novak sights)...buy it if you like it and the price is right...I don't regret buying mine...

I bought my pt1911 back in 2006 not long after they came out. It has somewhere between 1000-1500 rounds through it and has been flawless. Mine was $450 brand new but most I see now are well into the $600 range. They are good guns for the money, and are pretty accurate too.

Nice pistol.... Mine has always been reliable and I really like it. Mine is a Blue BHW and I paid $625.00 tax and all about two years ago...
I would say that one looks very nice and well kept $500-$600 is fair and you know it was your friends Dads gun.... I have a couple of those myself.
It seems in that situation in a way I felt like my friend wanted me to have them from his dads estate... I paid him top value and never looked back!
I think of the previous owners all the time when I am hunting or at the range with those firearms, and as far as the mossy, you can always of sorts keep it in the family.. I think that is the real message!

Roger That; If you could negotiate a good deal for that Taurus, I'd invest in a few Wilson (I have the 47D mags in .45, and the Elite mags in 9mm & recommend them highly) or CMC mags, when you have experience with 1911s, It's always worth the money to have good 1911 magazines.
The Taurus 1911 is a nice gun with some upgrades you don't regularly see in it's price range. Having said that, I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it.
I'm thinking $475-$500 would be fair to both of you.
Try and get him to name a price and go from there, if it's your buddy's dad's gun you don't want to insult him if he's expecting full retail.

Exactly! Perfect answer. In a situation like that I would never make a move till I heard from my friend exactly what he wanted. Its not for me to place a perceived value on that stuff. Its only my place to decide if I want to pay his perceived value.

Their warranty and customer service would scare me away.
Rock Island's are around the same price, yet they have a great warranty and remarkable customer service. So for the same price, why short yourself?

I love mine. 20,000 rounds (at least) put through it as a rental gun, then I got it for $250. It still has yet to let me down and looks pretty good too. It looks pretty slick in stainless. I wouldn't pay more than $400 or so for one.

As for myself, I have had and owned many Taurus (Taurii I Suppose) 25+ (and still own most of them) I have only used warranty twice and they were quick and cordial to me.
And just a few years ago the new CEO Mark Kresser come on board in 2011 and has made huge strides to correct some customer service issues, I think he brought a lot to Taurus with his background from Beretta and Sig.
As for myself, I have had and owned many Taurus (Taurii I Suppose) 25+ (and still own most of them) I have only used warranty twice and they were quick and cordial to me.
