My father in law is stepping up wanting to get a handgun for SD. Mostly a truck gun, probably won't conceal. I have found a Taurus model 66 357 but have no experience with this gun. I'm recommending 357 because he can choose between that or 38 with the current ammo shortage, giving more chances to find ammo. Any experiences or opinions with this gun?

Stepping up from what? People bash Taurus on a regular basis due to poor QC or QS. I wont do that this time but I'll say, Taurus 66 is a truck gun. Something you dont really care about as much as you would a Smith or Ruger or DW wheelgun.

Your 357/38 recommendation is an excellent one in my opinion with the duel cartridges. Although I'm currently finding NOTHING in my area cartridge wise.

Stepping up from having nothing.

I see. There is plenty of that going on these days, which is great. Are you a gun owner yourself? Maybe he could try out that Taurus or something similar in 38/357 that you may own. Or a range that can allow him to have a feel for what fits him.

I've owned the 65 and found it to be a very sturdy, well made revolver. It is a good gun for a truck gun.
Good luck finding ammo though. Sometimes high priced HP stuff shows up around here. You can actually find 9mm and 45acp more often then 38 or 357 right now.

Ive got a 692, which is a different family of Tauri, its part of the tracker/judge line. Id love to get a full length 66. I actually have a 66 barrel i was going to try install on my 692, but i like it too much to change it.

I have a 66 and consider it a good woods gun. They’re not in the same class as Smith or Colt but you can buy a Taurus 66, Hogue grips, pay a gunsmith for a trigger job add a Wolf spring kit and still have ammo and gas money vs a Smith 66 You can do all that and also make a mortgage payment vs a Python. Don’t expect a target trigger and slick as goose grease action but it’s a good gun to have. Hope this helps

Oh yeah, several guns, reloader, and train every week at my home range, as well as teach newbie friends and family safety and tactics. Just never had anything to do with THAT gun. I'm a CZ pistol guy, but he wants something "simple" so to say.

I typically have heard good things regarding the Taurus M66. Like always one should run through the checkout before purchase. But if it checks out good now they are in fact good guns and I would have no hesitation regarding purchasing one.

QC is lacking in all gun manufacturers at this time .. all of ‘em .. I have two Taurus revolvers at this time .. Im happy with them

Taurus guns are either great, or they are a basket case. The 66 is one of the ones generally known to be a great gun. I have had a couple of them over the years as well as a 689 which is nothing more than a fancy 66, and that particular gun was easily the best gun I have ever owned. Being young and dumb I abused it and eventually it showed signs of my abuse and I got rid of it. It’s my biggest gun regret.
There is a pretty generalized window of “golden years” for Taurus quality that seems to be roughly mid-80s to mid 90s. The guns are excellent in that time frame.
If your not familiar with how to check out a used revolver then use the search feature to find those threads. Endshake and timing are key.

Son had one..VERY reliable, easy to shoot, accurate and not a ton of $. I know Taurus gets the 'rap' here sometimes but he was very happy with it.

Bought it today and shot it. Much better trigger than I was expecting. No hiccups, except when I tried some steel case 357 Tull ammo thru it and it got stuck in the cylinder. Hate that stuff but its all I had. 38 shot perfect.

That’s exactly what I would have expected. Glad it worked out for you. A nice wheelgun always puts a smile on my face, even when I don’t get to be the one who has it.

My first "real" handgun was a 4" blued Model 66 I bought from a co-worker in 1988 or so. I was fairly new. It served me well until it was stolen in a burglary. It cost me $200 cash.

I replaced it with a Model 689 that I paid $199 for used at a LGS. The trigger isn't quite as good as the original, but it's still good. It's a nice handgun. The grips are just Ebay Thai grips, nothing fancy. I think it was made in 1990.

I ran across this older one a few years back. It's from 1983 or so. I gave a little less than $350 for it, IIRC. Instead of a transfer bar safety like the newer ones, it has some sort of internal trigger block. The trigger is smooooth. It's my second-best shooting 357 after my Model 27.

Good to hear about it working well, don't worry about the tula it would do that in any Smith or Colt, ask me how I know...
