Gentlemen: does anyone have any experience with the Taurus Tracker .41 magnum with the 8.5 inch barrel? I see a Taurus "quality" thread has already been started, so I'm not trying to solicit responses on the topic of overall Taurus quality (although that is a consideration). Just tying to determine what the thoughts are on this model. Thanks!

I see a Taurus "quality" thread has already been started,

Yes it and 15,000 other ones are archived on this site, a favorite bashing subject here. If you want Tracker answers, I'd suggest www.taurusarmed.net for questions for a less biased response. Now, one would THINK the brand specific site would be the biased (positively) one, but the problem is, there's too many Smith and Wesson fanboys on this site that hate Taurus just because it exists.

As to the guns themselves, I only have 3 Taurus revolvers and none are trackers, but I've wanted a .41 mag Tracker, mild desire, for a long time. It's not a burning desire, just a thought that it'd make a nice trail gun. I use my 4" Taurus M66 .357 magnum for that and really don't need more power. Another thing I do have against the Tracker is I just wouldn't want the muzzle break on it, hard on the ears and not necessary in such a gun. I kinda like .357 as a trail caliber, too, for the versatility, though I do handload.

What's your experience with your Taurus revolvers? How do they match up with S&W/Ruger in quality and performance? Thanks.

The .41 tracker and the .44 Special Tauruses (Taurii, Taurusi?!?) occupy that perfect niche of power vs. size (especially considering their cult status caliber). I wish S&W and ruger would pay attention.

As for the unsolicited reliability issues:
I had a 22 LR tracker that had such a poorly cut star that several chambers almost couldn't be fired double action because of the 30lb trigger pull. And it spit lead out both sides (depending on chamber).

I don't doubt that taurus can make a quality revolver at a reasonable price, but make sure yours doesn't have the issues mine did. It was one of the first firearms I purchased and I made the mistake of assuming a NIB gun would not have serious issues.

My 85 UL has the smoothest, best out of the box DA trigger (excellent SA, too) of any revolver I've ever pulled the trigger on. My 4" 66 is newest of the two 66s, best trigger, every bit as good as my M10 Smith. My older 3" gun has a little less slick, yet easily controlled DA and a slight bit of perceptible creep in the SA, not perfect, but not noticeable in actual shooting. All three are very accurate. I suspect the older 3" gun has had a lot of hot loads through it as when I got it, it had a Pachmayr Gripper on it that the back side faux checkering was worn flat on from shooting. It's still quite tight, perfectly timed, and I carry this gun IWB or OWB fairly often in cooler weather.

My 85 is a pocket carry, shoots 3" groups at 25 yards, about as good as it gets with a 2" snubby, at least for me. I need a little longer sight radius to do much better. The trigger is just awesome on that gun, though. It's a joy to fire DA with.

I really like the 66s better than Smith and Wesson K frames. I've owned a few, still have one in .38 special. I have split the forcing cone on it before, had to rebarrel it. The Taurus has a ROUND forcing cone, more beef in that area of the frame, is a few ounces heavier, but a stronger gun than a K frame Smith. It isn't a RUGER for strength, but it doesn't weigh 50 ounces, either. I own 8 Rugers, none of 'em a DA revolver. I have no desire for a GP100, too heavy. The SP101 was a SWEET IWB carry and I may get another some day, but my 3" 66 is nearly as nice. I wish it had a round butt grip, though, would tuck a little better. I had a 4" Security Six (no longer made) for years, but it never shot .38s worth a toot and felt recoil was pretty rough on that gun compared to my Smith 19, my Taurus 66, or even my lighter weight SP101 and Rossi 971s. I just didn't like it. It was a good gun otherwise and shoot .357 quite accurately. It just didn't like .38s, couldn't groups better than about 4" with wadcutters. I tried all sorts of loads in it, too.

I shot a club match a while back, pepper popper match. Everyone in that match was shooting Smith revolvers in the revolver class and I had the fastest time in the match with my 4" 66.

You will get plenty of opposite opinion of Taurus on this board, much of it based on the guy down the street's boss's nephew had one, that sort of thing. 90 percent of the people that had a "bad one" never checked the thing out before purchase. Just check the gun out before you plop your money down. I do that regardless of brand as Smith and Wesson doesn't have the greatest of reputations anymore, either, for QC. It has a lifetime warranty. I've never had to use the warranty, but I do understand the company is getting better at CS. It has been a thorn in the past.

I will buy more Taurus revolvers in the future should I deem one desirable for my collection. I've thought some about a 405 for carry.

MCgunner: thanks. There is definitely a Taurus bias. I've never handled one and appreciate the input!

I owned a 608 357 that spit lead. Sent it back to Taurus for repair. When it came back it still spit lead.

Taurus builds medium quality guns for a medium price. They are not in the same league as S&W, Ruger, Glock, Springfield, etc. etc. etc.....

My Tracker .41 is only a 4" but has traveled the west in a camera bag, making me and family feel safe against would be elements that exist there. Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming etc...

Never had to prove it, but feel with up most confidence if my aim were keen, it would have committed on doing the job.

I fired many rounds down the Barrel of my .41 with out a hitch!

I currently hold many Taurii firearms and have had only a couple problem in the last 26 years...bought my first in 1986 making just over $6 an hour...those were the days..Model 66 Satin Nickel 6"... man I miss that gun!

She was dead on...every time...

Went on to buy multiple through the years of 92 99 9mm , milleniums, .357's in 669 627 608....Raging series in 454, 44, 22 Hornet, 1911 BHW just last year, .38 revolvers in Mod 85 and Ultra lite, PT 22, PT 25, Millenium .40 (sold - I just dont like .40 cal) PT58 1st gen (2) PT58 HC - 1 Blue 1 Stainless, 905 9mm revolver, model 94 22 9 shot, I know I am missing some honorable mentions, but you get the point! :)

I can not concur with those that dislike the Taurus brand... I myself in said years have had no more problems than I have had with a couple major brands such as Beretta, S&W, and Ruger...mind you they were as well small issues that did require hating the companies.

My Taurus issues were fixed quickly and with no charge to me. (1) Slide stop on 1911 and (1) ejector on a 92

Never owned one. One friend had a 4" .41mag Tracker. Both he and the next friend I'll mention, liked it.
The previously mentioned ''next friend,'' has a 4" .44mag Tracker. I have fired it. No complaints from me. At $200 it's a great value.
Yet another friend, came by the house yesterday. He showed my a 4" .41mag Tracker in TITANIUM, he picked up a while back. He payed $300! From a gunshop? He just picked it up on a whim. No idea as to value or if titanium was any good.
I looked it over. Consitently, very tight cylinder gap. Trigger/action was fine. Not ''custom shop'' nice but, decent enough. Locked up tight, timed out well.
Awfully light, going to be a handfull.

I don't care for porting. That's my only problem with the Tracker.
I wish Ruger would do a 5-shot .41mag GP100 (no porting!). I'd be all over it.

Of the few guns I have sold, my Taurus Tracker in 45 Colt is one I would like back, it was a great gun and shot well, I "needed" something "better" so I sold it. Now you can only find the (stupid in my opinion) Taurus Judge in 45 Colt.

Greetings
Bought my two sons Taurus 6" when they hit 18 years. Plenty accurate and have held together now for 18 years with plenty of ammo through them.
My Trackers are all 4 " or 2 " 41 mag.. Bought them as carry items. The Titanium 4" is my favorite and gets alot of miles on it when I am up north there in the USA. It works with never a failure as do the other two.
I have had Rugers & S&W ´s fail.. along with Rossi & Colt . They are just machines that wear out built by humans who may be there just for a paycheck. You can get a rotten Taurus. M1 Garands fail as do M1A´s... Why even Kimber has "Return to seller" issues.
Sadly the US factories missed the boat on a medium frame 5 shot. Happily Taurus is inovative enough to try.

I was about to hit you with a batch of links, but it might be better for you to go to www.taurusarmed.net/forums/taurus-revolvers/ and ask there.

The Tracker in .44 magnum and .357 magnum has a majority of their fans are legion there and like their Trackers for good sound reasons.

.41 magnum owners are bit harder to find, but they are there.

I like the .41 magnum cartridge and have had a little experience shooting it.

If I had it all over to do again I'd have at least 1 or two handguns for the .41 in the fold.

As it is .357 magnums and .44 Special Tauri get the nod for me.

Don't own a Tracker in a large caliber. In .22lrf,yes. That's not quite center fire territory. :)

Own over 31 Tauri in revolver guise.

They all are giving sterling service.

had a tracker 454 with 6.5 in barrell, high polish, I miss very very much. Have 85 titan. ported in 38 sp. Cyl. feels loose, but locks up tight when tou start to pull dao trigger. Carry gun often. love it. By the way fobus s&w j frame holster will not fit it, gun touch wider than j frame.

I like my Taurus Tracker in 41mag. with 4 inch Barrel. It is an easy to carry trail gun of reasonable power, and I shoot it well. I do not like the ported barrel, but I have never fired it with out hearing protection, and I don't intend to. It fits very well in a Bianchi #111 holster designed for a Medium Frame 4 inch Revolver. That is the size that fits a 4 inch S&W K Frame. I tried buying a titanium frame, but never found one at a price I was comfortable with. The SS frame is 8 ounces heavier, and so far, I don't think that is a problem. I have a pair of electronic ear muffs to wear when I hunt with it.

tracker

Ive had a 357 4" tracker for probably 5 years now. Everythings pretty tight and aok with it...Is it as sweet at my 27-2 ahhhh..no, but nor do I expect it to be. What it is is a pretty nice shooting gun that is nice and light to carry in the woods. I agree with Avan47 with regard to the porting! I almost didnt buy it because of the ports. I only shoot mine with ear protectors and have shot it a few times without and its nasty!

Thingy in the Taurus Raging Bull box

I looked in the box of a Taurus model 444 Raging Bull and saw an odd piece of plastic that looks almost like a rear sight cover, but isn't. Not a word about it in the owner's manual, or otherwise in the box. Anybody know what it is?
