Taurus 608

Hows the Taurus 608's holding up. Anyone put one through some heavy paces? Out hunting, probably not many would take them hiking but maybe 4 wheeling and what not. Just wondering. Had a bad 'bout with a taurus 380 left me doubting them a bit.

I don't know about their autos, but I've had a couple bad bouts with their revolvers.

Guess I'm lucky. I've never had a bad Taurus auto or revolver.
Is the 608 built on the large frame, like the 44 mag? I have had the 44 mag since 1994 and haven't had any problems, so far.

jaymo what type of use has yours gotten range, light loads or has it been fed hot hunting stuff?

well it looks like all 608's are ported and thats a deal breaker for me anyhow so... but thanks again for the replies.

I've had a M66 for about 25 years now, and it has held up quite well. During almost three years of that time, it roamed the streets changing hands from one thug to another after being stolen in a vehicle burglary. After I got it back, I noticed an issue with the ejector rod sleeve working loose with repeated cycling, locking the cylinder shut. Easy fix with Loc-Tite on the sleeve threads.

I had a M94 I used to teach my then-wife to shoot with. Owned it for about seven years (1989-1996), then let her take it with her when we split up. That was a good little shooter, too.

My recently-acquired PT-22 (new to me, but made in 1998) has been great so far, but admittedly has only had a couple hundred rounds through it since I've had it.

I'd buy another Taurus without hesitation. But, that's just me..

Except for the PT92, I don't trust Taurus semi-autos. Probably not logical just based on a handful of pistols that I'd experienced. I do trust their revolvers and I have the 608. I actually took mine hiking. Man, was it heavy. The thing is 50-something ounces! As for accuracy, it is scary accurate. About 1" at 50 feet off hand. That is really good for me and better than I can do with most handguns at that range. It might have something to do with the long sight radius and neon orange front sight insert.

Other people often peruse these threads with similar questions, which is part of the reason why comments keep coming in. After all, if everyone started a new thread instead of perusing older ones, several members here (possibly including Weregunner?) would probably be chastising them for not doing a search first.

The OP's post states his own hesitation about the 608 was largely based on his negative experience with a completely different model, inviting commentary about Taurus products in general.
I don't see where the OP had or has a problem with how the thread progressed.

I have made up my mind but its still a good conversation. I had a ported charter arms 357, loud, louder than the sp101 that took its place. 357 is loud enough for me, no need to enhance its blast.

I am a S&W lover, so I have a hard time being unbiased. However I picked this one up in a pawn shop parking lot for $200.00. The guy I bought it from told me it had only fired about a half box of .357s. It is so heavy I can't imagine it wouldn't hold up. It's not as tight as a Smith, with a little end shake. It did shoot well, but I didn't keep it long enough to really test it. I gave it to my son in Alabama and he keeps it loaded every other cylinder with snake shot. I can't remember it being any louder than any other .357'

This is a thread about a particular model. That has nothing to do with other models.

I had a run in with the Ruger SR-9 a few years back, but that did not make the SR-9 a horrible gun. It made one that was recalled but did not make Ruger somehow a rotten company. Or all Rugers getting made out as a poor manufacture. I could have taken that way out, but it would not have been honest.

One gun does not make a whole brand,make or model does make or break a whole company.

Nor do I expect a person to do their own reserch in the archives here. It's not a bad idea but does not tell the whole story.

I own 41 Tauri. Unfortunately the 608 was not one of them.

I could bring page after page of actual 608 owners who get good use out of their 608s.

If the person follows these, If the checklists are followed in what to look for prior to buying one cannot get into trouble.

Nice to see you sticking up for Taurus when too many people with limited (or no) experience bad-mouth the brand. However, I don't see where the thread was headed in the direction that "Taurus is junk" (or even that "Taurus is the best.")

You own 41 Taurus firearms? Do tell, please. I'm impressed (maybe in a new thread about "Of which manufacturer do you own the most firearms?" or something.)

I've lost count of how many rounds I've put through it. I've shot some .44 Spl and a box of mild .44 mag through it, but most of my shooting with it has been full power hunting loads.
I've run a bunch of loads from the Vihtavuorri manual though it. It's about 28 grains of N110 powder with a 180 grain XTP. It's as much powder as I can cram in it and still seat a bullet.
It's about 3,000 psi below max pressure and runs around 1850 fps from my 7.5" Redhawk.
Haven't chrono'd it out of the 4" Taurus barrel.
At an indoor range, it vibrates the bones in your face. It's a very loud load, even out of the 7.5" barrel.
