Thinking about picking one up in September. Whats the general consensus on this gun?

Seems like a very nice piece for the money.

Ported and all.. stainless steel..

Owners and users, please chime in..ups and downs, what to look for.. accuracy etc.

Thanks,
Steve

Oh no here we go again. I have had fairly good experience with Taurus if you don't count the little tip up 22's.

This is exactly the beginning of the nonsense I'm trying to avoid. I know your intentions are well, and I would have appreciated that little note, in a private message.

I am asking about the Taurus 627 specifically here. Not the brand, not other models.. but the 627 6 inch. ONLY, and ONLY from people WHO HAVE OWNED OR HANDLED AND SHOT ONE.

I've had a 627 4" in .357 since 03 and can't say anything bad about it. It goes bang every time and is accurate. I've only shot around 500 rounds thru it, mostly .357 loads. The gun is still tight as day one and timing and lock-up on it is perfect.

Don't own one, however shoot one on occasion. Its accurate, light (titanium model) and no issues. Porting is a bit much however.

The Taurus® Mdl 627SS6 Tracker™ is a SUPERIOR firearm in all respects! My best friend has one and it is a trackdriver. I have shot his gun extensively and even with Buffalo Bore 180gr LFN Bear Loads it is a pussycat. It is well made, durable, accurate, and dependable. I will buy one for myself as a mate to my Taurus® 617SS2 357 Magnum. Get the 627 Tracker®; you won't regret it!

I owned and shot a 627 .357 7 shot. It was the only Taurus I owned with a trigger action I hated. I sold it.
Maybe it was just that specimen. No complaints about any of the others.

I have a 627 4". The gun is great. Handles all 357 ammo I have put through it. Accurate and the action is so smooth you would think it had work done to it. I have carried it on occasion but, it is mostly a Camp and Fun Gun. It compliments my 617 rather nicely. I have had very good luck with 8, 357 and 2, 38 Taurus Revolvers.

Why do ya say that? Reduces felt recoil, improves accuracy, reduces flash.. how can it be a bit much? Sounds to me like it just sweetens the deal.

I was under the impression that it increase flash, espically above the barrell in the shooter's eyes

Porting does none of what you said and I've never heard porting improves accuracy. Porting minimizes muzzle flip and no more. I have shot that gun and I also did not like the porting. It is a bit much as said above.

Having fired both a 627, as an owner of a Tracker in .357? The taurus gets my vote due to better perceived balance for -me-. If you want a no BS big bad .357 though, take a look at the Taurus 608. Dont let the gunsnobs fool you, its a legitimately awesome gun.

Nothing bad about the 627, just didn't feel worth the extra cost from a shooting perspective and didnt balance as well for me.

I like them both. Interestingly enough, the 627 has a lower MSRP than the 608. Whats the difference in the models?

I have a 627 tracker, have shot it a bunch. I have even taken a deer with it during handgun season. I like the ribbed grips. It is accurate and has a really good trigger. I think the gun is pointable and balanced. It has been my bedside gun for many years.

As far as the porting goes, ...I dont think the 627 has any less muzzle flip than my other non-ported .357's but man, is it ever LOUD. Ear splitting loud. I also have a 669 Taurus that is ported. It is the same way. Hoo baby, don't go hunting w/o your earplugs like I did.

I have had two Taurus' , a Taurus PT740 Slim-excellent pistol for CC and SD, ran 300+ rounds though without a problem at all-traded in for a Ruger KLCR revolver, should have kept it too. Still have a Taurus Judge Tracker .410ga/.45C 6.5in barrel that I use for hunting deer, pheasants, etc. and home defense. Both are/were very accurate and dependable. Next purchase will probably be a Taurus because of previous satisfaction.

The ports help reduce muzzle flip...some. However with the certain powder you get 2 jets of white gas shooting up across your line of sight..exactly what you dont want in a dark environment. If you handload you can pick a low flash powder like AA9. Then there is the noise, however both are minor issues to me at least. YMMV.

:banghead:Way to back a negative into the post without direct experience as the OP asked.:banghead:

I had one from a favorable trade so cost was not a consideration. I liked it well enough, it was a great "loaner" at the range and I haven't a single complaint but found that I shot it no better than I shot my brother's 689 so I traded down for the lighter and more pleasingly OC'd 689. Should one come my way again "at the right price", I'd certainly welcome it.

I had a mag pug 357 that was ported, it was louder than my 3inch sp101. I would probably shy away from porting in my the future. I know not a 627 just my thoughts on the porting.

porting is rough at an indoor range

My wife and I rented one of these at an indoor range once because .357 is my favorite caliber and it looked cool. We were on vacation and all I had with me was the black bottom feeder - boring! The wife is pretty handy with a pistol and has shot .357 and .44mag (and likes it) at our club which is an outdoor range. We didn't know the gun so we started at 25 ft and she went first. After one round she yelled "effing A, I'm not shooting this GD thing!" loud enough for the whole range to stop shooting and look around. She told me she'd come back when I started shooting something more reasonable.

That one round did tear the X out of the target though, and I ran it out to 50 ft and proceeded to remove the rest of the X ring and some of the 10 with the help of a friend. The thing was dang accurate. Less recoil than my six inch M28. But every time it went off it felt like somebody had swatted a fly off my forehead with a loosely wrapped newspaper. Unpleasant. After one box my buddy and I were done - went back to the boring bottom feeder.

I'm going to stay with the positive about my tracker with porting.
I accidentally mixed a hot load with the plinkers (chamber #3). I was on a mission to test the rapid fire. bang, bang, BANG, bang, bang (5 shot 44).
Surprised the heck out of me, but it recovered well.

The OP asked a question, but put stipulations on the responses, eliminating any negative feedback, so the forum will stroke his ego about the gun he wants. Yet, you're mad that I posted a link to an unbiased analysis from a very well regarded gunsmith? I was being nice.

I wasn't going to post this, but lest you think I have no direct experience, here it is. I have played with my friend's 44 Mag tracker (same gun the op asked about, just a 5 shot 44 Mag version). Jim Stroh was the original owner of that gun. After Mr. Stroh bought it he could only get it to pattern like a shotgun, rather than actually shoot a group. So, Mr. Stroh bored it out, sleeved the barrel with a quality blank, and the revolver shot fine after that. It was pretty funny seeing the bbl sleeve through the factory ports.

The 44 Mag Tracker still interests me though. I wish S&W would offer a no lock 696 again, but that probably isn't happening in my lifetime.
