Taurus PT92 & 99 Owners...

I took it to a smith and he couldn't figure it out. I got rid of it.

I'd have gotten rid of the smith. Anyone who couldn't "figure out" what is probably a simple issue doesn't need to work on my guns. :)

Deckard.. the DAO berettas dont even have a sear in them. Its just a notch on the hammer and the action bar. I suspect the notck on the hammer was starting to wear down.

I converted my DAO beretta to DA/SA, and was suprized that I didnt have to remove a sear to swap it out.. I just dropped in the sear, swapped hammer, applied necessary sear hardware (spring and pin) to keep it in the frame.. and done.

I just picked up another PT-92 "rescue" (previous owner didn't know jack about firearms cleaning!), my second this year.

Mine is much like Russ Jackson's on pg. 2 (internet pic, not my actual gun):

I've owned 4 of them now. No problems with any of them. Not so much as a single malfunction. Taurus has it right with their safety as well. Cocked and locked or simply decock. ;)

I have a technical question about the PT92's.

If you have a round in the chamber and safety off, decocked, is it still drop-safe?

All of mine have a firing pin safety, which would make the answer 'yes'. Dunno if that was a rolling change somewhere early in the production or if they always had it.

I too have a later PT-92 with the decocking safety. I had a Beretta 92FS for a while, but let it go for needed funds. Which one was a tough choice, but the frame safety on the Taurus made it the keeper. ETA: I also like the ability to engage the safety with the hammer down.

I once had a chance to buy an early Beretta w/frame safety and heel mag release, but the seller changed her mind at the last moment.

Of interest is that the Taurus was originally a licence-built Beretta for the Brazilian military. Beretta actually set up a factory in Brazil, then sold it to Taurus when the contract was filled. Since then, each pistol evolved along slightly separate paths.
