I was offered a PT 709 Slim in a trade. I've found mostly mixed reviews, and from my own personal experience I've noticed that Taurus seems to be inconsistant: some of their guns are extremely accurate while others are lemons. This has shown in the PT92.

Anyway, If anyone here has personal experience and can give me a concise opinion on this gun I'd appreciate it. Hearsay can also be helpful.

I've had mine for a little over a year. It's been a gem. No problems with a variety of ammo, plenty accurate and has a sweet trigger. The sights are kind of...meh. But, they are adjustable so you can really get this thing sighted in right. Recoil is very minimal considering how little it weighs. My wife likes how easy the slide is to rack with her little girly hands. ;) It's a good gun.

I've had mine for a year and 300 rds. No issues. I searched for info, and was recommended to give the gun a thourough cleaning prior to shooting. It did have a lot of gunk in the gun. Also, it was recommended not to us WWB, so I used RP. I love mine.

I had one - I no longer have it. It had problems extracting even after I sent it to Taurus. They replaced the extractor and adjusted the slide lock but it would still choke.

I believe there is a Gen 2 709 which may be better but mine, despite me liking its accuracy and feel - just wasn't reliable.

I've shot my niece's. Hard trigger, picky about ammo and kicked pretty hard. She and her father (gun dealer) don't like it therefore it seldom gets shot at the range and she won't carry it.
Not saying all Taurus's are bad, they may have gotten a lemon.

Hard trigger and hard kick? Either that's a major lemon, or you're comparing it to a 1911 and not its competitors. It's VERY soft shooting compared to its competitors, and the trigger is light compared to its competitors.

It's my everyday carry weapon. Need I say more?
Mine is 2 yrs old and about 1200 rounds thru it. HPs, FMJ, plated and lead mix. Seems to feed most anything.
Best sub compact I've shot. The trigger really smoothed out at about 500rds.

say what? :scrutiny:
I think its a fantastic gun, crisp trigger, and soft recoil.
I love mine!
I feel its as close to a single stack 9mm Glock as you can get, I know that's blasphemy, but its my opinion of my 709 :what:

Uh, not really. The trigger system is VERY different and it has a manual safety. The 709 is actually SA/DA, not DAO like a glock, and not DA/SA like all non tauruses capable of restrikes.

I like the SA/DA thing, but it's something that only taurus would've done. This is the company that released a lever action judge revolver carbine (google it for a laugh) and a 380 revolver. They're never afraid to do something weird for the hell of it.

I've always found their quality control to be hit or miss... I've shot some flawless Taurus pistols and some terrible ones. I know i've seen mostly great PT-92s and PT1911s but I've also seen them suffer from ridiculous issues and various jams. I know that when we qualified at the range the out of the three Taurus guns only one of them made it through... the 1911's safety fell off while firing and one of the 92s kept FTE. the other 92 was perfect...

Taurus 709:
I had one.
Fired brass cases were bulged so I sent it back.
After it got back, they had replaced the barrel; however, the original barrel was numbered to match the frame & slide, the replacement barrel was blank. :(
Trigger broke WAY back.
Traded it off.
No more Taurus. :)

My opinion is so-so. A friend bought one for his mother, and we put a box of ammo through it on its first day.

The slide was comparatively easy rack, much easier than a P-11. At 7 yards I had little problem putting together a rather good grouping for a small pistol. The problem was that it shot a full 2" low at 7 yards, with the sight in it's highest position.

The trigger was fairly good, and it felt good in the hand.

We had a handful of misfires.

I have one. It's a dandy little pistol. I did have to send it back to Taurus because it would light-strike a lot. The pistol's equivalent to a trigger bar needed to be adjusted out of the way of the striker.

I've been shooting lots of +P out of this little thing and it never misses a beat. Been perfect since back from the shop way more than a year now.
It's a great little pistol when it's put together right. It appears that all the parts are well made. Taurus seems to have assembly line quality control problems. Everything I've had to send back to Taurus turned out to be a
build problem. (and i've had to send all of them back to the factory but for the little 380 tcp and the beretta 92 clone).

No offense to anyone on here, your opinions are all valid and true to you, but I have no freaking clue what some of you are talking about. I've put many hundred rounds through mine and not a SINGLE hiccup, NOT A DARN ONE, and it's got a FANTASTIC trigger for this type of gun, and it actually is very similar to a glock but with a few key differences, accurate as I ever need a sd pistol to be, super easy to carry, it's my go to when I don't feel like my 1911, I absolutely LOOOOOOVE it,

Btw I know Taurus has a bad rep, but I own numerous tauruses and haven't ha any problems out of any of them, many different makes and years produced, just throwing my .02c out there

I'll say it's very similar to a ruger lc9, but in MY opinion better, however I've only handled the lc9 and dry fired it, not actually put any downrange, but Ill say it again, I love mine, I trust my life as well as my entire family including my 3year old and 4 month olds lives to it every day...

What is the trade consisting of?

I bought one new at a gunshow and it is a nice shooting carry gun, with a little practice you can hit 25 yards very easy without a rest. I would recommend one to anyone that wants a small auto that's at least a 9mm

I've had mine since December of last year. Mine's been flawless, it feeds everything I've sent through it. I will correct that, I bought a spare mag (it comes with two, unlike many of its competitors but I wanted an extra for the range) and it won't stay locked in place. The other two are perfect. It's easy to shoot and pocketable, it does require some concentration to shoot well like any small pistol.

Trigger takes some getting used to. It's such a long pull in the normal (SA) mode that it can affect aim. With some practice you learn where it breaks and can be very consistent. It's smooth but the break is a long way down there. Reset is short and crisp.

Mine has been great. I carry it regularly. It shoots great. I love the trigger. The grip might be a tad small but it is a compact package. I say get one.

Had mine for almost a year now. Pleased with it so far. BIL tried it and he is a southpaw. He was impressed. I added a pinky extension to get a better grip. There are no extensions available so I epoxyed a Micro Kahr pinky extension on the mag bottom plate. Much better now.................Joe

As the owner of three Taurus guns I can offer an unbiased view of the company (but not of the Slim in particular)...

For some time I've been reading posts of people praising Taurus and others blasting them. I think the reason for that is two fold.

First, is Taurus's QC. You may get a gem, or you may get a lemon. Its up to luck.

Second, their guns are good in my opinion, but not necessary durable. My PT-99 has been back for repairs twice (something in the barrel broke and it couldn't be cycled, and a cracked slide). It also had a broken locking block and broken rear sights - that I was able to fix with the repair parts they sent. My Model 66 also had its sights blow apart. They are now epoxied together. As lightly shot guns you'll probably be happy. My PT-99 is more accurate than both my SIG 226 and CZ-75. As heavily shot guns, though, you may be disappointed. Even with a lifetime warranty, the UPS bills add up.

I was looking at the 709 for a good long time, but after reading enough posts reporting problems, I decided there are enough better guns (both more durable and better quality checked) that I'd pass on the slim. I ended up with a SIG 239 which has had no problems.

Bottom line: If your life depends on it, or you intend to put a thousand rounds a month through it, I'd pass on Taurus. If you want a infrequently shot range gun, you may be very happy with it.

I got one and could not hit the broadside of a barn with it (from the inside) with any ammo I tried. I literally could not hit the paper from 10 yards with a rest. I sent it back to Taurus who replaced the barrel. Now it is as accurate as I am and I love it. I seem to have experienced their variable quality control. My opinion is good gun for the money.

Speaking of the QC on the 709, I'll say this about mine -- it has the most perfectly finished feed ramp of any pistol I own (and I own a lot). It's literally polished to a mirror finish from the factory. Even the feed ramp on my EMP doesn't look as nice.

Ugliest feed ramp is on my PK380. It's rough and looks like it would be an issue (it's not though, gun works fine).
