Most of us here already have the essentials covered, we have what we need and some or most of what we really want. So with the tax refund season upon us and word that a "rebate" is coming our way in the summer, I'd just like to put foreward the idea that most of us would be better served by putting the money toward a class or two instead of buying more hardware.

If you're a CCW'er, take a handgun class that goes beyond the state minimum for training. A hunter should take a rifle or shotgun class geared toward that. Got a shotgun in the bedroom? There are HD classes that focus on use of the scattergun in close quarters.

If you're one of the "new guys" here and don't have the basic hardware covered, consider planning ahead and making that your next purchase, after you get the firearm you need this tax season.

Nothing wrong with buying new stuff, I just got a new rifle. But think about adding some "how to" along with the "what".

I will make sure I have about a thousand rounds for all my weapons but no new hardware other than maybe some mags

Buy gold. You'll need it.

I remember the '70s and it was nothing like the dumb TV show a few years back.

Would love to buy a gun, but it'll probably go into a snazzy new Sigma 70-200 2.8 macro lens. Darn my expensive hobbies.

Mr. El Tejon,
Thank you for being a productive successful wage earner in our great country. We regret to inform you that at this we've decided to take a portion of your money and give it to those who will likely spend it friviously. It is for the children. We appreciate your understanding and generous charity with this matter.

Love,
Your Government

Sad, but true. And the sheep eat it up...

That's funny, Uncle Sam always ask me for more money at the end of the year.

I think an investment in foreign currency wouldn't be a bad idea at this point... heheh.

What's the deal anyways? Is the rebate a real rebate or will it be deucted form next years refund?

I read an article from CNN that said it was going to be deducted, but then they changed the article. It is really weird, I read the article, got confused and looked for more info. I then tried to find it 30 minutes later and they got rid of the sentence. Current article.

This is the sentence that they removed:
The package, which passed the Senate 81-16, will send rebate checks to 130 million Americans in amounts of $300 to $600 for people who have an income between $3,000 and $75,000, plus $300 per child. Couples earning up to $150,000 would get $1,200.

The checks are an advance on next year's refunds, and most, if not all of the money, will be deducted from taxpayers' refunds in 12 months' time.
(emphasis my own.)

What is this "refund"...

Yeah... makes you scratch your head doesn't it? Also triggers some awkward conversations. I had a coworker announce that I really owed a "thank you" to his kids.

Me: "Ummm.. what?"

Coworker: "For the money they are giving you! The $600 that they are going to pay for."

"Oh. That. I think you're the one who needs to thank them. Don't you get more for each kid?"

"Yeah but I'm the one who's supporting them! I'll spend that money to support them."

"If you are taking their money to support them, doesn't that mean they are supporting themselves?"

Perplexed look.

"So what are you going to buy?"

"My wife and I were thinking of combinging it with savings to buy a replacement car. The minivan is getting kinda old and I was hoping we could get an SUV."

"Oh. Well, you know, if you took that money and saved it for your kids... invested it in a good index fund perhaps... then in 50 years or so it would probably more than pay them back for whatever tax liability they are incurring due to this stimulus package."

*silence*

Arrrg.

Refund? scratches head wonderingly...

At least conforming home loans will be going up...so I've got that going for me! Bigger house = dedicated gun room!
