TC Venture vs ?

My T/C venture has a 24 inch barrel. It is a .270W. BTW, T/C has a version of the venture that has a camo covering on it and a scope also camo covered. I saw it at Dicks for ~600$ and it had a $75 dollar rebate as I recall. After rebate that is $525. That is 200$ more than I paid for just the Venture. I don't know what kind of scope was on it.
I like the Venture, but respectfully disagree with Clint regarding the smoothness of the action. It is nowhere as smooth as my Winchester model 70, but it did not cost as much as the Winchester.

I have a new make to throw in the discussion , a Ruger Hawkeye All Weather . I found one for $565.00 . How does it compare to the others .

I am not going to be able to handle it before buying . If anyone is familiar with it , what is the weight & LOP ? Do you get moa accuracy out of it ?

I have a Hawkeye in 30-06, but in a walnut stock. It's a good shooter, and your price isn't bad. CDNN should have very competitive pricing as a comparison. The Hawkeye has an angled action screw which sets apart from the rifles leading up to this post.

I think I made my choice . It's on hold for a little while because of truck repairs this week . So there is time for me to change my mind . But I think that I am set on the Winchester M70 Ultimate Shadow . It is about twice the price of the Venture ($818 ) but only $120 dollars more than the Tikka and it fit me better than the Tikka and felt better . I think I am going .308 also for factory ammo availability & cost .

Well, as they say, you can't hide money. You are leaning toward a very nice product. It's a good bit more than the Ruger but will have a fully floated barrel and should have an excellent trigger as well. You should go ahead and buy it and start riding the bus before you change your mind. Where I shop 30-06 is no more expensive than 308.

One thing to consider is during the last ammo shortage .308 disappeared from store shelves around here as did just about every other caliber too ( Wisconsin ) , but 30 06 could always be found. Maybe it was just a regional thing.

I was thinking about that also and you are right about .308 ammo . But I saw more .270 around here .

I do have a press , but I am not much of a reloader yet .

If this is a true hunting rifle, then a box of ammo should get you sighted in and some chrono numbers for your range sheets. A few more boxes to settle in the barrel and get you familiar with the gun, then a box for a few seasons of hunting. Buy 100 rounds of whatever you plan to hunt with and be done for a few years or more.

I'm looking for a short/intermediate range hunter also. I've read pretty much all there is to read. I'm going Tikka T3 and in .308. I already reload for .308 so I already have everything I need other than hunting bullets of choice. The .308 is nice b/c I can load heavy or light (130 - 180gr) depending on intended game. It's good in open ranges to 400yds and in thick brush.

Anyway, best of luck, the Winchesters are very nice rifles. Man would be hard not to get one of those in wood though, they are just so pretty dressed in brown.
