A combat technique to locate your enemy while under fire is called "Recon by Fire". There are several applications for this technique.

1. Possible Ambush- If you are moving and suspect and enemy ambush ahead and are not sure of the location a quick "Recon by Fire" will get an undisiplined enemy to expose his position by movement or return fire. Once you identify the suspected position, put several members of your Team in an overwatch position, and have a small section open fire with 10 to 15 rounds each into the suspected position, then cease firing. If enemy moves or returns fire you have accomplished mission and can now fire and maneauver on the target.

2. In Contact position identifacation- Once you are in a sustained contact and need to ID the positions and types of weapons firing at you, you need a disiplined "recon by fire". Pick a suspected position and on a signal troops open fire with a "Mad minute" of 10-15 rounds each and then all freindly troops cease firing. Enemy troops will continue firing allowing you to ID their positions and weapons types, and then you can prioritize your fires.

enemy of the people

In order to better understand this handle please read or see the play by Henrik Ibsen titled "An Enemy of the People "

Mine's pretty basic. :) I like it, it's familiar, my friends already use it...so there we go.

4066

Every Marine is a rifleman first.

I was a dataTek Marine with specialties in Network Engineering and Computer Security Protocols. That included training in offensive analysis and countermeasures. I fought on a Binary Battlefield.

So I am:
DigitalWarrior

BTW is the book "The Magic Engineer" by L. E. Modesitt, Jr.?

Mine's a leftover from TFL also.

I'm also known as "Target Guy", from DSP infamy, but somehow that seemed a bit...'inappropriate'...for a gun/shooting forum.

But I collect Hand Rifles as one aspect of my collection bug. That'd be handguns chambered for rifle rounds, or handguns that share fundamental characterisics with rifles, like a 16" barrel.

F'rinstance:

Springfield Armory S.A.S.S. conversion kit for 1911's, calibers .243, .308, and .358 Winchesters. All of these shoot and handle VERY differently, so I think of the as three different guns. That, and I got 'em spaced out over time, also.

A 16" .45 ACP barrel for that same Springfield Armory Milspec 1911. Goofy fun. Makes my 1911 do, like, 9 different things with all the rest of the different calibers it runs.

An AMT Automag III in .30 Carbine. (Started the whole thing, really.)

The Monster. You know, my STUPID gun. That's an ADC double derringer with 8" barrels chambered for 7.62 x 39. Here I am shooting the silly thing. Clip thanks to Sven and Hakan Grips! From this thread.

With a bit of a stretch...;)

S&W 629-4 Mountain Gun. Put those insane Remington Yellow-box 180-grain softpoints in this thing, and it's DEFINITELY Hand Rifle territory.

The Taurus M-425 Tracker in .41 Mag. Medium-frame, FULL power. As the 629 above, with any factory load I've put in it.

S&W Model 1902, 2nd change, in .32-20. You shoot it, you know. Brilliant white flash, loud crack, respectable recoil. All this in 1902, no less!

My AMT Automag V .50 A.E. qualifies here, also. I said s-t-r-e-t-c-h...;) (Not that far, though. All you gotta do is shoot it. Then it's no question.)

A Traditions .50-cal Muzzleloader. 'Sgot double set triggers, fer cryin' out loud. I plan to run rifle-weight .44 or .45 caliber (350-500 grain.) bullets in sabots, one of these years. The thing's got a rifling twist of 1 turn in 20", that's faster twist than in my .45-70 Traspdoor Springfield that is set up for 405's! I have such dangerous plans...

Speaking of dangerous plans, I'm going to make a set of Howdah Pistols by cutting down a couple of those 12-guage muzzle-loading double rifles that Cabela's has. 1-1/4-ounce roundballs ought to be a barrel of monkeys, doncha think?

Of course, I definitely want all of those OTHER Hand rifles too, like T/C's of both flavors and all sorts of calibers, Lone Eagles, XP-100s, Ruger Hawkeyes, Pachmayr Dominators, Savage Strikers, That 16" Glock conversion I read about, Mechtec conversions that I can't own in my stupid state, Magnum Research BFR's Wichita Silhouette pistols, that $2500 Blaser pistol you can get in .375 H&H, an Anschutz Exemplar, ALL of those cool Taurus revolvers in calibers from .218 Bee up to .454 Casull, and any other high-powered single shot you care to name. Plus I need a set of SAA's in all the rest of the old WCF "dash" cartridges like the .44-40.

Hmmm. I best invest in high-quality wrist brace. Be nice if I could arrange to win the lottery while I'm at it. Hey, I can dream, can't I?

I'm a shoe fanatic... .. . NOT!

It's the nickname of my favorite Formula One driver, Michael Schumacher.

The date? Don't ask me why I put the date on the end of it..

Kicks and giggles, I guess.;)

I just kinda came up with it. BTW, good taste in comics, spacemanspiff. Bill Watterson was a brilliant cartoonist, too bad he had to retire. Hey Recon by Fire, you live in San Luis, PRK? Let's talk sometime

Origins of mine handle

Sindawe: 2nd in command of the Nar, heriditary keepers of the tratitions of The Black Company in Xar-Gle. One of the few Nar to sign up with the Company after the disaster at Dejagore. Fell to the shadows on the Plain of Glittering Stone. Was in the service of the Lady, Lt. of the Company when commanded by Croaker, when the Company was in the Service of the nation state of Taglios in war against the Shadowmasters.

Derived from the Annals of The Black Company novels by Glen Cook

Picked up the handle years ago after re-discovering my attraction to The Dark Side, and realizing that the former handle (Valentine Micheal Smith) no longer fit my view of the world. Sindawe fits better my views of Honor, Duty and Service.

Liquid Tension Experiment was a group of progressive rock GODS that got together and made two of the most amazing albums ever recorded (the second one being better than the first). No vocals, just pure odd-time goodness with some of the best playing to ever grace the world. I try to give them free advertising any time I can, they're just that good. IM me if you want some mp3s. IM name LiquidTension769.

John Petrucci - Guitars (Dream Theater)
Mike Portnoy - Drums (Dream Theater)
Tony Levin - Bass (Too many to list, most notably King Crimson)
Jordan Rudess - Keyboards (solo at the time, currently with Dream Theater as well)

They stopped making albums after Rudess joined DT since 3/4 of the group was DT anyway.

My name is rather known, it's just my first and last name.

My other THR name, Gray Fox, is based on Gray Fox of Winter, a chosen "native" name. Also, Gray Fox is based on a Metal Gear Solid character, the code name for Frank Jaeger.

born in houston, texas, ate up all of it's history, especially the fight for independence (alamo). davy crocket was a childhood hero, and i loved the houston rockets. krockett became my "nickname" that friends would call me.

GT portion comes from my subaru legacy 2.5GT...first car i ever bought and paid for myself.

Kevlarman, named after the miracle fiber from DuPont. When I was a kid, I was always interested in science. Kevlar really piqued my interest because it was so unbelieveable that such a thin fabric could stop bullets.

My AIM screen name, NomexBoy, was made along the same reasons. :)

When trying to come up with a name, I looked over to a box of Hornady .30cal Ballistic Tip bullets, setting on the shelf.

As a buyer at the University of Tennessee, we had to have a password to enter the system. I chose win as mine. Early one morning the Director was in my cell and needed to use my terminal, and asked what my password was.

I told him, "win", and he was very impressed. "Oh, does that indicate your desire to be first in your endeavors?" "No," I replied, "It is short for Winchester, my favorite gun maker".

I lost points, but ask me if I gave a krap.

On THR, at least 6 letters were required, so in the interests of easy memory, I added the "wun" (one)

Fly320s, Hi, neighbor ! I live about a half mile from the Old Louisville Boat Dock.

My screenname is pretty easy. Im a combat engineer in the US Army, and combat engineers have a leadership course that is our equivaliant of Ranger School(or maybe pre ranger). Its called the Sapper Combat Leadership Course. If you complete the course but fail something, your a sapper graduate. If you pass everything you become a Sapper Leader. Hence the screen name, out of 60 guys, I was one of four to finish the course and pass all the requirements, so i started using it as my screenname on most of my boards and accounts.
