Tell me, what was the best movie shoot out of all time?

Heat, Equilibrium, BHD, Way of the Gun, Tears of the Sun, Collateral.

Gee, they're all in my collection, too :D

Don't really know what is the best.

But a couple of my favorite weaknesses are Nolte's Extreme Prejudice and Stallone's Cobra. Love those 1911s.

Did you use deadly force?

I used everything I had!

For military shootouts, I would pick We Were Soldiers or Tears of the Sun.
And yes, in We Were Soldiers Sam Elliot is considered god, even more so than Ermie! :neener:

Old west (realism) Open Range, (for the heckuvit) The Man With No Name Triology (Fistfull of Dollars, A Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; if you watch one you've gotta watch 'em all!)

Road to Perdition was good, haven't seen it in a while. A Man Apart is very good as well.

My favorite movie shootout - based solely on the fact that there's so much hell-fire, brimstone and damnation flying back and forth that you just have to step back and say, "Dayum!" - The (new)Battlestar Galactica Minisiries. Right at the end where the fleet is fleeing the Ragnarok Anchorage, Galactica goes toe-to-toe against hellish odds and just lays down a "enemy fighter suppression barrage" Remind me not to be a fighter pilot in the future....

Haven't seen most of these movies, but I have the list generated for Netflix.

My vote go to Collateral, the yo homie scene was great. Backed it up four times to watch it. Wife threatened me with great pain if I slowmo'ed it one more time. Good triumphed in the end, I think Vincent became too emotional and lost his professional edge and caught the round with his name on it.

The other great one is Sam Elliot in "We Were Soldiers", "Gentlemen, prepare to defend yourselves".

Which John Wayne movie was it where they kidnapped his grandson and he went to fetch him? Most everyone says "I thought you were dead?"

The "Kill Bill" movies were fun stuff.

"Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up. See this? This is my BOOMSTICK! It's a twelve gauge double barreled Remington, S-Mart's top-of-the-line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids Michigan. Retails for about $ 109.95. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop Smart. Shop S-mart."

Well, you guys have pretty much covered them all. . . One I would like to add is a John Sayles movie called "Matewan", about a coal miners strike in, I think, W. Virginia, in either the twenties, or thirties. Little bit of propaganda-ish, but I don't know my coal company vs miners history that well, so maybe it's on target. Anyway, near the end there is a shoot out with the Sheriff and some company goons.

To me (never shot anything that was shooting back) it seemed very realistic as the shootout is done at close range, shots miss, people are shooting as they duck, or trying to run away---when they get shot, they sort of groan, and ---well ya gotta see it. It's shot very matter-of-factly, no glamour, no "whoo-hoo" factor. Plus the rest of the movie's pretty good, as well.

Good thread. I don't think anyone has mentioned it, but LA Confidential has some nice gunwork.

I think I can add a darn fine one to this mix. Steve McQueen working his way down the staircase of the flophouse hotel in "The Getaway." Working a pump 12 gauge and a handgun, it's been too long since I've seen it to remember the model. Ali McGraw chipping in when needed, too. A damn fine flick.

I can't believe no one mentioned Cross of Iron with James Coburn and James Mason. Set on the Russian Front told by the German point of view.

Some good PPSH, MG34/MG42, P38 action. Sam Peckinpah directed it.

McQueen used a High Standard K-120 12 GA. riot pump in The Getaway.

But my vote goes to The Magnificent Seven with Yul Brynner and an all star cast. It's done on a grand scale that befits it's title, with plenty of western gun play. But these standout.

1. James Colburn's knife against gun duel at the stockyards.

2. Yul's "clapping hands" test of speed for the new recruit.

3.Calvera's running fight with the Seven in the village. Especially the ride through the village when the bandits realize they are trapped.

4. Colburn's contemplation of a flower while on a mission to kill bandit snipers. Moments before he makes a spectacular long range pistol shot on an escaping bandit. And pronounces it the worst shot he ever made.

This movie is an homage to Akira Kurosawa's classic " The Seven Samurai" and does it justice.

flatdog.

I think one of the best shoot outs of all time is between Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson in Once Upon A Time in the West. The whole lead up to the fight is amazing, and the ending is so sweet.

Army of Darkness

The scene at the end in S-mart. Ash shoots a demon chick(?) with an exagerated over-enlarged lever on a 30-30 upwards of 25 times. At one point he throws the rifle, jumps on a rolling cart, and catches the gun, only to rapid fire it another 15 times. Summing up his victory with the tagline "Hail to the king baby!"
(by the way, this is a comedy)

I like how in Austin Powers 2, after the hero goes back in time, he assists his former self by pointing at bad guys with his finger and going "bang." Meanwhile, his old self shoots at nothing in particular four or five times, and kills 6 people.

No one mentioned the big gun battles in the Bond films.

The underwater fight in Thunderball, the volcano assualt in You Only Live Twice and the space shootout in Moonraker.

I loved those when I first saw them, they may be dated now but in my memories they are da bomb.

Maybe not the most realistic, but surely entertaining, and a great ending: the final scene in "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid"

Heat for sure. Open Range had a good one too, but I think it may have been the lack of action up to that point that made me think it was so awesome. First shot fired was the best.

I like the one in Carlito's Way. Al Pachino is out of ammo and leans out the door. "You think you're big time? Well you're gonna die, big time! Here I come!" I just love that scene.

Bunch of good ones

Some of my fav would be:

Last Man Standing
Band of Brothers
The Big Score
The Jackal
Open Range
Assault on Precinct 13 (Remake) has a nice documentary on weapons used in special features.

Heat sucked by the way. :neener: Except for the gunfights ;)

The Searchers.

Nope...Big Jake

The Searchers was a much older movie. The Duke had just returned from the war and his nieces were kidnapped by Indians. He spent the movie searching for them, not to rescue them, but to kill them because they had been with the male Indians. In the end he couldn't. Very good movie, but I don't think it was especially noted for the gunplay.

Some of the best shoot outs of all time was from that great show, Lancelot Link! :D

Sorry... it was the first thing I thought of. I know, I have issues.
