One dreary day last week, I was busily sweeping the floor of the VA Veterans Home where I work part-time. Floor-sweeping was drilled into me by the Army; I can do it reflexively, using just the brain stem, freeing up the higher brain to contemplate more interesting matters.

So I got to thinking: what all guns would I want, if I could just wish for them and get them? No, that's too easy. I'd be there all day.

So, I made some rules. Ten handguns, ten long guns. Any make or model currenly or recently in production/distribution. That means, things that are or have recently been available from your dealer, from the C&R importers, etc. Nothing super rare or exceptionally valuable; nothing which I'd never be able to afford individually. Nothing I couldn't legally own without jumping through BATF paperwork.

Oh, and I could have all the accessories for each rifle that I wanted. Custom guns are allowed.

So, with that in mind, here's what I came up with:

LONG GUNS

1. -FAL Rifle, .308 caliber. DSA type II metric receiver, 21" chrome lined barrel. Lightweight fake muzzle break, pending the end of the AWB, after which it'd be removed, the barrel shortened slightly and threaded, and an L1A1 flashhider installed. Penguin humpback buttstock, Ego G3 grip, DSA bipod-cut handguards. DSA quick-detach light bipod. Extreme Duty scope mount, Leupold QD rings, DSA 4x24mm Tactical scope (Made by IOR Valada). 50x twenty round magazines, 20x thirty round magazines.

2. -M1 Garand Rifle, .30-06 caliber. Orion 7 Enterprises Select Grade. M1907 sling, 100x enbloc clips, 10" bayonet. Proper buttstock cleaning kit and oiler, USGI manual.

3. -M1 Garand Rifle, .308 caliber. Springfield Armory new production. Smith Enterprises shortened to 18", M1D flashhider installed. Fitted with black synthetic stock, black GI M16 sling.

4. -Romak-3 Rifle, 7.62x54mmR caliber. Buttstock replaced with fitted ATI "Dragunov" style stock, handguard painted to match. RSA adjustable trigger installed. Russian 8x42mm scope/mount, with 800m visible laser. 20x ten round magazines, sling. Recoil buffer installed.

5. -Robinson VEPR II rifle, .308 caliber. Fitted with Ultimak scope mount, see-through rings and 2.5x scout scope. Harris bipod. 30x ten round magazines, 5x five round magazines. Recoil buffer installed.

6. -Arsenal Inc. SAM-7S AKM type rifle, 7.62x39mm caliber. Fitted with 1" extended buttstock and Ergo G3-style grip. Available Russian 4x24mm scope/mount, 30x thirty round magazines, 20x forty round magazines, 5x seventy-five round drums. Possibly fitted with a Mojo peep sight.

7. -Winchester 95 lever rifle, .30-06 caliber. One of those field grade new production models you see from time to time, not the fancy engraved ones. Lyman tang sight installed if possible (though I've heard they have tang safeties).

8. -Winchester 92 lever carbine, .45 Colt caliber. That limited edition 16" Trapper model that CDNN has currently.

9. -Saiga 12 Shotgun, 12 Guage. 19" defense model, with adjustable sights. Slip-on recoil pad installed. Late production model with the bolt fixed so you can insert a fully loaded mag with the bolt forward. 20x five round magazines, 20x eight round magazines (yes, they're legal, just rare).

10. -Mossberg 590A1, 12 Gauge. 20" heavy barrel model, with ghost ring sights. "Bantam" stock installed (the factory Mossberg stock is too long for my taste). USGI M7 bayonet.

HANDGUNS

1. -Ruger Redhawk, .45 Colt caliber. Stainless model, shortened to 4.5". Nice grips, Tyler T-Grip installed. Action job. 10x speedloaders.

2. -Ruger GP100, .357 Magnum caliber. 4" stainless model, adjustable sights. Action job, 10x speedloaders.

3. -Ruger SP101, .357 Magnum caliber. 3" barrel model, Eagle Secret Service Grips. Action job.

4. -Ruger SP101, .357 Magnum caliber. 2" hammerless model, possibly also with Eagle Secret Service Grips. Action job.

5. -Colt New Roll Mark Government Model, .45ACP caliber. 5" blued model, ambidextrious (non-extended) safety installed. 10x Colt seven round magazines, 10x Chip McCormick eight round Powermags, 10x Chip McCormick ten round Powermags.

6. -CZ-97B, .45ACP caliber. Modified with an EAA Witness ambidextrious safety, full length steel guide rod, Wolff 16lb recol spring. 20x ten round magazines.

7. -RPB USA MPA-10 MAC style pistol, .45ACP caliber. Top-cocking model, with "safety extension". Second upper receiver, side-cocker with scope mount. Third upper receiver, the 16" carbine upper with the scope mount, and the detachable buttstock. 30x thirty round like new USGI Grease Gun magazines.

8. -Polish Tokarev, 7.62x25mm. Preferably with the aftermarket safety not installed, if possible. 10x eight round magazines.

9. -US FireArms Company Rodeo, .45 Colt caliber. 5.5" barrel model. Debated this or Ruger single action, decided to go traditional.

10. -Ruger Mk. II, .22LR caliber. 5" stainless bull barrel model. 10x ten round magazines.

WELL! I think that about sums things up nicely. Pretty well-rounded collection, I think. No, I wouldn't be content with just those, but it'd be a nice start.

In all honesty I have just about all my firearms desires/bases covered.

I mean there is always one more this or that or the cool new tactical toy but in reality the only thing I am really missing in our collection is a decent lever action, preferably pistol caliber.

We have a 1911, plenty of CCW and HD pistols and revolvers, a SAA type, a few tactical rifles, a few wooden rifles, some historical pieces, some big calibers and some small. Bolt actions, semi autos and odd little squeeze cocker :D and the greatest battle implement ever made that goes PING after 8 bangs. Got a few shotties to round things out and basically I am left with a lever action being the only glaring missing item.

I am thinking a nice Marlin .357/.38 possibly a short little carbine.

Well, now, I like to see all those Ruger GP's listed. But in the rifle department I notice that (as near as I can tell) there are no sporting bolt actions. Lots of semi-autos and foreign military stuff, but aren't you ever going to go varmint hunting, deer hunting or such?

If not, sorry I brought it up. But a Remington 700, Winchester Model 70, Savage bolt gun or some such thing would make your gun safe look really uptown.

Lots of semi-autos and foreign military stuff, but aren't you ever going to go varmint hunting, deer hunting or such?

Hmm. Probably not. But only because I don't know anything about cleaning game, and if I came home with a dead, bleeding deer strapped to the hood of my car, wanting to hang it in the back yard to clean it, my mom would have a conniption. (She doesn't care about hunting, she just doesn't want a dead animal in our yard.) I just never got into hunting.

I did think of that, however. On my list I have three .308s, two .30-06s, and one 7.62x54, which is in the same power class. Could I not hunt with any one of these rifles?

Years ago I was at work and my partner was also a fellow gun nut and hunter. I bought one of those magazines that has a few articles then like a catalog section that has most of the guns currently produced. We decided to play a game for the rest of the shift. We would take turns going through the magazine and naming the guns that we felt we needed (of course this all stemmed from a discussion of hitting the lottery). But we had rules: You couldn't just say you wanted a particular gun, you have to give an argument as to why you NEEDED that particular gun. An example might be: I want a Ruger Single Six because I need a .22 plinker/hunter and I don't have any other .22 single action handgun................
The first section was handguns and I started the game. My partner got mad and quit when I got up to 58 handguns and wasn't even done with the handgun section of the magazine: and I gave a reason why each one filled a needed void in my arsenal.

To play your game:
Colt M4 Clone
Springfield little tiny 1911; whatever they call them (Ultra Micro or something like that ?)

That is all I can think of that I want and don't already have.

Long guns:

1. Kimber M82 in .22 Long Rifle.

2. Ruger M77/22 All Weather in .22 Magnum

Handguns:

Hmm...

Something of a Colt fan, Mr. Humphrey? LOL

I admit; when I bought my 2nd (technically third) .45, I was looking at both the Colt NRM Gov't Model and the Springfield Mil-Spec. The Springer was somewhat less expensive, and was parkerized (that's a plus, to me).

But...the Colt was a COLT, with a little horsey on the side! And it had proper vertical slide serrations!! Could I pass that up?

Nope! :D

I'll play:

long guns

1) Rem 700 LTR in .308 w/Badger Ordnance Rings & base & 10x Leupold Mk IV No. 1, mil-dot

2) Rem 870 in 12 ga magnum, right hand, 20" bbl, improved cylinders (and 30" barrel & 26" barrel - both with removable chokes)

5) FN-FAL in metric (to go with those 30 round magazines of course)

9) Marlin 94 in .357 (gotta have a fun gun)

10) S&W J frame w/3" bbl, round grip & adjustable sights

What, no Glocks?

I've been trying to convince myself to buy a nice multi-purpose 12ga pump, but every time I start looking for a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500/590 or something in that neighborhood, I start thinking about folding stocks and ghost ring sights and parkerized finishes and 20-inch barrels and nine-round magazines and Surefire forends and side-saddle shell holders and tactical slings and "heat rails" (other than cosmetic purposes, what are those good for?), and before I know it I'm looking at fifteen hundred dollars' worth of ninja'ed up shotgun, and kicking myself for it. Then I start over, with a nice walnut stock, a 28" barrel, and well, let's make that a little shorter, and maybe put on a polymer stock, and... :banghead:

For pistols, I want something small and light. I've been carrying a full-size H&K USP 9mm since the police academy, and I just can't bring myself to trade it in for something a little more ergonomic (we shot a 300 together, and it's tough to let a friend go). I'd like to have one of those little Kimber Ultra Carry numbers, with the stainless finish and the night sights, but that price tag isn't getting any less intimidating.

My problem is that by the time I came up with ten guns I want, I'd be in a drooling coma. :)

I read the thread title & agreed with you completely until I started reading :what: .

You see, I was assuming that you meant that you needed ten of each type of weapon in your safe. That would fit my situation perfectly if that was the case. Residing in the household there is myself, Mrs. L, & 3 assorted lowercase L's running around. That would give each of us one to shoot & one for spare parts :D .

Oh well, back to square one :cuss: .

Greg

I don't know about long guns, but:

Handguns:
1. Beretta 92G Elite II
2. Beretta 92G Elite
3. Beretta 92G Elite IA
4. Beretta 92G G-SD
5. Beretta 92G Elite II (oh heck, another one won't hurt)
6. Beretta 92 Stock
7. Beretta 92 Billenium
8. Beretta 92 Vertec Steel
9. Beretta 92 Combat
10. Beretta Tomcat Titanium

Geez Skunky....HKs just don't do it for you, huh? LOL

I can think of some long guns, if'n you didn't live in Kali...

-HK 91 (preban)
-Bushmaster M4-gery carbine with the rail handguards and all kind of doodads and crap hanging off of it
-Benelli M1S90

Heck, you might be happy with those three.
:neener:

I love these threads, they're fun.

HANDGUNS:
1. Colt Special Combat Government
2. Jardine Custom 2 tone 1911
3. S&W 329 PD
4. S&W 686
5. Sig Sauer 2 tone P226
6. Sig Sauer P220ST w. M6
7. Colt Python
8. Kahr PM9 2 tone

7. Bushmaster Varminter AR-15
8. AR-10
9. Bushmaster M4
10. HK MP5

I'll give it a shot.

Long Guns

1)Ruger 10/22 with a decent 3x scope.

2)Ruger 77/22 with a laminated stock and 3x scope

3)11.5" bbl "Commando" style AR-15 with old-school integrated carry handle and peep sights. This would be an NFA weapon but I wouldn't mind paying for the tax stamp (enough to disuade me)

4)Lewis Machine & Tool, Monolithic Rail Platform AR upper. These are the ones where the upper receiver and free-float RIS handguard are both machined out of a single piece of aluminum. Mine would have a 14.5" barrel and would have an EOtech HOLOsight and a bushmaster lower. Again this would be an NFA weapon (too bad)

5)DSA SA-58 FAL-style carbine with a fluted 18" barrel, harris bipod and 4x Trijicon ACOG ballistically matched to .308

6)Remington 700 VS .308 with a 10x mildot scope and BDC, harris bipod and sling.

8)Springfield M-21 Tactical rifle system.

9)EDM Windrunner M96 .50 BMG Rifle with 24x scope.

10)Benelli Nova Pump SP with 18.5" bbl, ghost ring sights, recoil reducer and magazine extension.

Handguns

I'm just about to turn 20, so I havn't given handguns a whole lot of thought. At this point I'd settle for a few decent 1911 knockoffs, both single and double stack, maybe a beretta or two, and some kind of .357 revolver, oh yeah, and at least one .22 just for cheap fun.

Hmmm... Ten of each? OK, I'll play. However, how about making us give reasons for each choice? That would stump Skunkabilly, I bet! :D Also, I'm assuming that the ten of each is all we'll ever get - no possibility of replacements, etc. Therefore, I'd better have "spares" of the most important weapons, so that if one is damaged or needing repair, I've got another one handy.

OK, then. Long guns:

1. For hunting and long-range defensive purposes (unlikely, I know, but what the heck - this is fantasyland, isn't it? :D ) I'd pick a Savage in .308, 22" barrel, with Accutrigger, stainless steel, synthetic stock, decent scope (backed up by good iron sights), etc.

2. Because choice no. 1 is a primary "feeding" and "survival" weapon, I'd take a second one for backup.

3. An AR-15 with several different uppers, including .223, 6.8x43, .22 LR, .22 Magnum, and whatever else I fancied. Wherever possible, I'd want a gas-piston arrangement rather than the standard AR-15 gas system.

4. Again, because choice no. 3 is a primary "defensive" and "feeding" weapon, I'd take a second one as backup.

5. I'd like one "heavy-caliber" rifle for brush hunting, defence against bears and undead ninja bear grizzlies, etc. I'd take a Marlin 1895GS guide gun in .45-70, stainless steel, worked over by Wild West Guns to include a full-length mag tube, take-down ability, decent sights, etc.

6. For hunting and self-defence, a decent shotgun is a must. I'll take a Remington 870 Wingmaster in 12ga. with several barrels and all the accessories.

7. Because choice no. 6 is a "must-have", I'd take a second one for backup.

8. I've already picked a .22LR upper for no. 3, but I'd like a good .22LR bolt-action rifle for training, plinking, etc. So, I'll add a CZ452 to the list.

9. Having taken care of the "really need" list in just 8 guns, I can now use the last two for fun. So, my first "fun gun" would be a good-quality TC muzzle-loader, with spare shotgun barrel. This would take care of a lot of fun needs, and enable me to hunt as well, if necessary.

10. The last "fun gun" would be something really long-range, for marksmanship and potential survival use. I'll take a .50 BMG Barrett, please! Bolt-action would be OK.

That's taken care of the long guns: so how about handguns?

1. For primary CCW use, I'd want something ultra-reliable, light enough for continuous carry, and rugged and robust enough to be dependable for my lifetime. I'd go for a SIG P220 in .45 ACP, with plenty of magazines, night sights, etc. I'd also take a .22LR upper for this gun (I understand these are available if you know where to look).

2. Again, because no. 1 is a primary weapon, I'll take a second one for backup.

3. For backup CCW use, I'd want something small, light and reliable. I'll go for a S&W J-frame, chambered in .357 Magnum but usually loaded with .38 Special +P's, Crimson Trace laser grips, action job, etc.

4. Again, because choice 3 is a very important weapon, I'll take another one for backup.

5. For hunting and field defence, I'll take a Ruger Redhawk in .44 Magnum, stainless steel, with accessories such as a scope and/or red-dot sight, etc. Action job. Moonclip conversion by Wild West Guns.

6. Again, #5 is a very important weapon, so I'll take a second for backup. I might have one with 5.5" barrel and one with 7.5" barrel (incorporating scope rings), just for variety.

7. For small game hunting, plinking, etc., I'll take a Freedom Arms Model 97 in .22LR with a second cylinder in .22 Magnum. I might be persuaded to change the chambering to .17HM2 and .17HMR...

8. For home defence (night-table use), training, and occasional CCW, I'll take a S&W Model 625 in .45 ACP (for ammo commonality with 1 and 2).

9. For the same reasons as no. 8, but for ammo compatibility with 3 and 4, I'll take a Ruger GP-100 in .357 Magnum.

10. As a "fun gun", and to use with #9 in the long gun list, I'd take a Ruger Old Army BP revolver.

How did I do? :D

4) Stoeger Nickel Coach gun w/ black wood appointments.

I love to day dream too:

Ten Long arms
1) M1 Garand, 30-06 nicest condition that I could find
2) M1A, 308, match grade, maybe some custom work
3) Ruger 77 Mk II, 30-06, maybe some work, with good glass
4) Mossberg 835, 12 guage slug barrel and bird barrel, should cover all the upland game hunting.
5) Ruger Gold Label, 12 guage, or another quality side by side shotgun
6) Ruger 10/22
7) Marlin lever action, either 44mag or 30-30
8) SMLE Jungle Carbine or rarer SMLE variant. Long Lee perhaps?
9) Thompson 1927 45acp semi auto with drums. If we're really in a heavy dream, then class II
10) Player to be named later, maybe an AK47 type of semi auto clone, FN Fal.

Ten Handguns
1) Springfield Armory GI 1911A1 45acp
2) Top notch Springfield or Les Baer 1911A1
3) Ruger Mk II Govt Target Bull Barrel 22lr
4) S&W 66 4" 357 mag
5) S&W J frame 357 magnum like the body guard model 649? or Ruger SP101
6) S&W 629 or Ruger Redhawk in 44magnum
7) S&W 17 22lr 6" barrel
8) Sig Sauer model 220 45acp
9) S&W 625 4" 45acp
10) to be determined

I'd probably try to pick up a very collectible rifle and handgun to be 'safe queens'. That was tough. I thought of about 3-4 more for each long arm or handgun that I'd like too.

It would seem to me Skunk gets it.

He found a platform that works for him. He is confident in it. He wants multiple copies. You can't argue with that.

I'm a little more diverse.
