Just curious to know, you have that rifle and that handgun or shotgun, or whichever combination your first two firearms are, whats that third gun you have to have or keep?

I have the rifle, the handgun, the third one?

As much as I want to say shotgun, I'm thinking my Marlin 60 would be that third gun. I just think it'd be more useful than a shotgun, especially when you have to shoot your food.

Its a simple question from a simple guy.....
There is no right or wrong answer, and if you can't answer.........don't.

The point is, based on the situation there can be any number of answers. You're asking the question, but failing to supply context to the question. I'll have different answers for hunting, home defense, SHTF, Chinese Hurricane Zombie Paratroopers, or any other situation I can come up with.

But you want a simple answer with no contextual relevence? Ok.

Hand gun, rifle and shotgun. Wicked awesome topic.

Since you seem to prefer black plastic to walnut and bluing, you might as well complete the set with a black plastic pump gun set up for the zombies of your choice.

Personally, I would prefer a bolt action rifle, a nice revolver, and either a SxS or O/U shotgun - all with nice wood and highly polished bluing

Different strokes for different folks

Everyone needs a shotgun and a 22 rifle whether they know it or not. :)

I have two marlin 60's handed down to me. Bot have seen 1000's of rounds and run great. If I didn't have one, I'd buy one. Cheap and good to go accuracy out of the box. I also have kids. The marlins never fail to put a smile on their face and give them lots of quality trigger time...cheaply. It will never be tactical nor cool, the aftermarket ignores it (save for scopes, a bolt handle and an aluminum trigger group replacement if yours breaks) and it will never win you any oooohhh's and ahhhhh's...but it gives you cheap target practice and plinking goodness. You can grab a used pawn shop special marlin 60, 1000 rounds of ammo, a bouncing ball reactive target, a self resetting spinner target and a few packs of sticky targets all for the same price as a few hundred rounds of ammo with other calibers that could be used up in a single family outing. It is hard to go wrong with that if you don't have a 22 rifle...even if you don't have any family to bring along.

Personally, I'd opt for either a 12ga or 20ga shotgun (12ga preferred). After that a .22LR rifle. Your AR is perfectly suited to harvest small-medium size food game.

I have had over three guns for over 50 years. I have no clue what the third gun I bought was.....chris3

I have said for awhile that if I have to start thinning out the collection the ones that won't be leaving are the 870 Super Mag w/ 26" VR Rem-choke barrel and 20" rife sighted IC barrel and and my 4" Ruger Security Six .357. The third would probably be my Marlin 39M.

Whats right for me might not be right for you. You will know better than I will.

I'd usually say shotgun, but not if you don't want to shoot/hunt with one, or don't want it for defense. I wouldn't get a gun that I didn't really want, that didn't really feel what I perceived to be a need. For pure cheap fun, I'd say .22 in something.

A .22 is always a great caliber to have, especially in a rifle. My Remington 550 has been in the family since it was new in the early-60s, and it is both fun and practical. I would have a tough time choosing between a .22 rifle and a shotgun.

But as others have said, without context it is impossible to say. SHTF = shotgun. Stuck in the cabin for winter = .22 rifle.

I think you have the right idea. If it was all I could have I'd take my .308, 1911, and my Ruger 10/22. You could easily carry all three if you were on the move. Rifle slung over your chest, handgun in holster, and you .22 strapped to your pack. Easy.

I'd say, having the pistol and rifle covered, you need a good pump shotgun. Preferably a 20" barrel with 7+1 (or greater) mag tube capacity.

Preferably a 12 gauge for greater versatility.

Shotguns are so versatile, load-wise, I think everyone should have at least one. They are 'excellent' for defense and can be used to hunt everything from small game, with light loads, to large game with buckshot or slugs at closer range. And there are also all manner of loads out there as well: less-lethal, flare, mixed defense slug and buck, etc., etc.

Yes, you could substitute a good .22lr pistol or rifle if you like. I have a Browning Buck Mark pistol and Browning Auto Rifle to cover that.

My first gun was a Springfield XDM .40. My second was a Benelli Supernova. My third was not a rifle, but a Ruger LCP. I needed it for the two months of decent weather we have here, and I already had a long gun. I do plan on eventually getting a rifle, but I'm not sure between the three (pistol, rifle, shotgun) on my next one either.

That's the whole point of the thread.

I'll have different answers for hunting, home defense, SHTF, Chinese Hurricane Zombie Paratroopers, or any other situation I can come up with.
The OP wasn't asking you to pick the three weapons you'd select to complement one another, making you the iconic Rambo of a specific situation. He was asking you to select which gun would be the third wheel in your collection, if you had to limit it to three guns. Really not too complicated.

Maybe you never picked up on this, but when a topic doesn't interest you, you're allowed to move along, as opposed to commenting on how dumb the thread is. Pretty lame move...

To the OP, mine would be a Bushmaster M4A3. The first two are a CZ 550 American in .308, and a S&W 629 Outfitter in .44 Magnum.

And by the same token, when a really dumb thread comes along, you're allowed to comment on how silly you think it is instead of just moving along. Correct?

Let's face it, the whole idea of the thread has very little, if any positive value. It's kind of like asking: "Hey, if you were going to have all but three fingers lopped off, which three would you keep?"

What self-respecting gun enthusiast enjoys thinking about only owning three guns?

Additionally, the same question has been posted here many times in the past. It's all been said before, probably several times.

Personally, posting a near duplicate question the umpteenth time doesn't bother me. Silly questions like "which three guns" don't even bother me. What does bother me is that these threads eventually log many, many replies, which could one day be used as validation for the idea that none of us "need" any more than "x" number of guns. "See, look at those 113 posts from gun enthusiasts indicating they only really need three guns!"

I just don't see any value to the discussion, but I do see a potential downside.

To prove I'm not a total stick-in-the mud, I'll change the question a little and give my answer.

Question: "Realizing there are many dozens of different tasks a particular firearm might be particularly well-suited for, which three guns are MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?"

For me, the answer would be a 1911 Commander in .45ACP, an AR-15 carbine, and a Remington 870 Wingmaster in 12 gauge, 22" long.

But, then I would:

Buy a Government length and Officers slide to go with the 1911, as well as a .22LR conversion for it. And, in case I ever wanted to hunt with it, I'd go ahead and find a 6" slide and a matching barrel in .460 Rowland.

I'd buy a .22LR conversion for the AR-15, as well as a complete upper in .45ACP, another in 6.5 Grendel, and another in .450 Bushmaster.

And for the shotgun, I'd purchase a 30" barrel, and an 18" barrel.

See what I'm doing here? Sneaky, huh?

-Matt

Forget it, now that I think about it, I'd get tired of all the slide and upper and barrel swapping. So, I'll change my answer:

It would stink, but if I absolutely had to, I could limit myself to the following guns:

Colt 1903 .32ACP, Colt 1908 .380ACP. Colt Ace .22LR, Colt 1911 9mm Commander, Colt .38 Super Commander, Colt 1911 10mm Government model, Colt 1911 Combat Commander .45ACP, Colt 1911 Government model .45ACP, Colt Officer's model .45ACP, Browning Hi-Power 9mm, AR-15 carbine, AR-15 6.5 Grendel. AR-15 .450 Bushmaster, Browning ATD .22LR, Pedersoli Lightning clone in .357 Magnum, Uberti 1873 in .357 Magnum, Ruger SP-101 2.25" in .357 Magnum, and a Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge at 22".

And then I'd spend the rest of my life complaining about how many guns I missed out on playing with because I had been limited to such a meager "collection". ;)

And yet you spent more time addressing the OP's question than several others combined, and far more than anyone else overall.
