I Bought That Second Gun Because....

I have a 9mm auto ( Sig 228 ) for All Legal Purposes every day carry.

I have a .45 because all Loyal Americans are required to own one buy law , I think.

I have a Black pistol gripped folding stock 12 gauge Mossberg for Home defense.

I have a nice wooden furniture Rem 870 pump for Sport shooting w/ non tacticool types - skeet , ducks , whatever.

I have a Colt Mustang to wear when the 9mm is overdressing.

I have an AR15 for the End of the World.

I have an AK to annoy my Governor.

I have a Winchester 1894 Timber Scout to shoot slow & close deer.

I am about to buy A Rem 700 30.06 to kill and eat an elk this coming Fall. But not all in the same sitting.

There's more .. but you get the idea.

1. To keep the others company.
2. Having an odd number of guns is unlucky.
3. Having an even number of guns is unlucky.
4. Because, just because. :neener:
5. Because I want to be like my late brother Rob, who answered when I once asked how many guns he had, "Enough".
I asked for a number, and he said he didn't know, and that was how he knew it was enough.

Why does a woman "need" thirty pairs of shoes??

Why does anyone "need" a collectable or antique car (or anything else)

No one needs an I-Pod, video game, or 50" TV

It's not a matter of need, it's a matter of what you want to do with your money

Other than food, clothing, and shelter, most everything else is a luxury

Some really good responses. Thought provoking. Cutting-edge. And if all that weren't enough, yes,... underwear, for Pete's sake.

Guns lend themselves well to collecting.

--They are smaller and more affordable than a collection of cars/boats/airplanes.
--Unlike dogs, horses or llamas, thay take very little space or upkeep and don't eat much (edited to state that they only eat as much as you chooose to feed them).
--There is a variety in manufacturers, action types, configurations, and so on, that cannot be "covered" easily.

They are infinitely pleasing to the discerning eye, hand, etc. Much as a painting, a sculpture, a good book or a beautiful woman, each one is a work of art which stands on it's own merits and does not diminish the desire for, or appreciation of, others.

That underwear was hilarious!

I am not arguing why you need multiple guns, I just want to know if you had any other reason beyond the very original "Because I can" or "The voices in my head.." ... you guys are so cool :p

I have a desire to get more guns as everyone here, but I also have other considerations as everyone else here has as well. I would like to get approximately one-thousand 1911's and I wanted to see what some of your reasons are! Thats it folks!

all of the above, plus...

I figure at least that if I were to sell a gun I already have, I'd get a LOT less back than what I paid for it. Hardly worth it then to get rid of a gun, even if I see something that'll work better for me... better just keep that old one around for a spare or the "what if" scenarios other people already discussed.

You'll almost certainly keep seeing firearms that'll serve some purpose better than what you already have, so get it! Sort of the 12 days of Christmas but in reverse...

For years I had a couple of 9mm service pistols that stayed in the house, then when I decided to CCW I needed something smaller, so I got a 380 that could fit a pocket holster.

... then I saw and bought a compact 9mm for pocket carry... but kept the 380 and the other 9's.

Then I came across a value-priced .357 snubbie and I wanted the increased knockdown power of .357, so i got that, but kept the compact 9, the 380, and the service 9s.

Then I wanted more knockdown power for HD, so I got a 12 gauge, but kept the .357, the compact 9, the 380, and the service 9s.

Then Katrina hit NO and LA, and I worried about a SHTF scenario and not being able to keep marauding hoodlums at bay with my pistols.. so I got a Mauser K98 collectable but I shoot it. But I kept the 12 gauge, the .357, the compact 9, the 380, and the service 9s.

Then I heard about SKS rifles, and thought "could use the increased firepower, and 8mm mauser is kind of hard to get without the internet", so I bought an SKS. But, I kept the Mauser K98, the 12 gauge, the .357, the compact 9, the 380, and the service 9s.

Then I had to get a .22 plinker to practice with, so I could "save money at the range." So I got a 10/22, but ... kept the SKS, the Mauser K98, the 12 gauge, the .357, the compact 9, the 380, and the service 9s.

I think I've done well to get all this past the Finance Committee, and I'm optimistic I can slide some sort of AK clone (a low-end WASR will be dandy for me) you know because in a SHTF scene I might need more firepower than the SKS can lay out. And I've got a nice pile of 7.62x39 anyway... but I'll keep the SKS, the Mauser K98, the 12 gauge, the .357, the compact 9, the 380, and the service 9s.

One other side benefit to building up a collection in case you're worried about SHTF, I think, is that if things go badly enough that money's no good, think how much you could barter a rifle and say 200 rounds for it for! You'd better start off well-equipped because there's no going back to Gander Mountain or even Walmart once the balloon goes up. Clean them out of shotgun shells and 9mm BEFORE it happens! :neener:

cause every time you buy a gun Rosie O and Pelosi feel a disturbance in the force:evil: . Yesterday I sent three simultaneous shivers up the place where their spines should be. I went in to look and bought three "military style" rifles:eek: even worse none of them are, nato guns (NWO) and they've all probably killed someone:eek:

And of course, every time you buy an EBR Diane Feinstein kills a kitten:evil: ...I don't care much for cats.

Tool Box

I have:
A large Phillips screwdriver. And a small one. And one in between.
A large flat screwdriver. And a small one. And one in between.
A set of jeweler's screwdrivers.
A set of Allen wrenches in metric. I have another set in inches.
A set of star drivers.
A set of socket wrenches in metric. I have another in inches.
A large adjustable wrench. And a small one. And one in between.
A large adjustable plier. And a small one. And one in between.

Those tools all have one thing in common: they TURN stuff.

I also have . . . a bunch of tools that pry stuff, that cut stuff, that hammer stuff, that clamp stuff, that make holes in stuff . . . and so on.

That's my first toolbox.

And then there's my electronics toolbox.

And then there's my automotive toolbox.

And then there's a collection of power tools.

And then there's my "around the house" box for hanging pictures and fiddly things like that.

Then there's all the tools that are too big for a box. Some for digging, some for raking, some for painting, some for cutting wood, and so on.

There is NO WAY that I will ever have enough tools. There's always some job that needs a tool I don't already own.

But, years ago, I had one screwdriver. It had four kinds of heads, but I just had the one. I probably didn't NEED another one.

No one complains that I have too many tools.

I'm sorry, what was the question again?

I need.

People that own a dozen or so firearms are people with disposable income and a fancy for guns. But in truth your armory turns into a liability as houses get broken into all the time. Come on people you only have two hands. Now with that negative crap said I'll get to the positive. I personally believe that a back up piece is in order. Things break and weapons and ammo malfunction. And lets be honest every weapon has an application. The right tool for the right job. It should be about a need, not a want. Guns aren't toys and shouldn't be collected as such.

PS This is just my opinion so please don't bother me with arguments.

fatts

Not to be argumentative, but allow me to clarify something.

It's not the Bill of Needs. It's the Bill of Rights.

A right is not subject to "requirements" or qualifiers.

I have a RIGHT to free speech. The first idiot that tells me that I should only say what NEEDS to be said will get a real earful.

Some people don't want guns. They don't have to own any.

Some people do want guns and, since it's their right to do so, they buy what they believe is suitable and what fits the application they have in mind.

El Tejon also points out that a spare is prudent, so if you need one, then you need two.

As you become acquainted with The High Road, you will observe that asking "why you NEED that" will get you some . . . energetic . . . responses.

By the way, welcome to The High Road.

Because I just cant help myself  . Guns are my hobby and I like to have a nice collection to play with. More logical reasons can be found as well. I have a .22 rifle in addition to what I would hunt or fight with because its cheaper to for high volume practice. I have a .22 pistol in addition to more serious calibers as well for the same reason. Another good reason would be different tools for different tasks. There has yet to be one do all caliber or gun.

I have two kids now, now I need 2 of everything so no one fights over my junk when I'm dead.

It took 14 years before I bought Garand #2 (that was last year).

But I'm itching for a third. I can see the downward slide.

I bought 2 yugos (my first 'commie' hardware) because I knew I'd need a back up for parts and they are so cheap right now (but parts are still sketchy). I'm leaving 1 as a mummy in the cosmo.

It's always about more, after that it is just individual varriation.

And BTW: if anyone is worried about attracting thieves just invest in a solid gun safe. And then, boobie trap the most 'attractive' gun. It might be illegal in your area, so check with your attorney first.

The first gun I bought was a Ruger Mark I. I think everybody's first pistol should be a .22. But then I wanted something a little bigger. So that was a Ruger Redhawk in .44 Mag.:D I had to buy all the others to fill in the wide gap between the 2 calibers, with the occasional mind fart that caused me to deviate and buy some rifle.:uhoh:

Well I do collect, everything from 1/2 action Martinis to pre-wwII semi auto pistols. So I'll keep the discussion to some of my hunting/SD/HD/Plinking guns.

I bought a pair of BHP's in .40 S&W for my carry pistol, because one is none and two is one, or some crap like that, I used it to explain them to my wife. Then one day a really nice used BHP Practical in .40 came into my local shop so I got that too, because maybe three really is two.

I've got three 30-06 rifles for hunting. Why? Well number 1 was a grade III BAR and it was just pretty, and I didn't have an '06 at the time. Number two was a Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe a couple of years ago when Walmart was closing them out for $289. Couldn't pass up that price could I. Number three was a H&K SLB2000K Deluxe, found it new in the box in 2005 at a gun show, very scarce and well made weapon at a decent price.

And I liked the Gr. III BAR so much I wound up finding a Gr. IV in .270 for a good price. I didn't have a .270 so had to get that one.

I only have one 7x57 hunting rifle, a custom on a Mauser action. But I also have a custom 7x64 because I got a really great deal on a barrelled action.

I got a .458 Win. and a .50 Beowulf AR, they are good pig and coyote guns, and I didn't have any big bore rifles.

I've got three .223's, one for hunting and two for plinking. I got into AR's because I wanted a .50 Beowulf, then expanded into .223 and 6x45 on the same platform. My wife couldn't handle the weight of the bull barrelled AR so I wound up getting a SU16 A because I'm a thoughtfull husband. We both liked the "A" model, but I wanted a "C' model after they came out so got one of those also. Because three is one, crap, now I'm confusing myself.

And I needed a match pistol to shoot competitions. I wanted a Limited gun for IPSC so I got a 16 shot Witness Elite Match in .40, but that was too much gun to be competitive in IDPA ESP so I got a XD9 Tactical for the lesser recoil. I don't shoot IPSC now, but I might one day, and now I have a gun for it.

I'm not sure how the rest of them all got here, they just sort of followed me home without explanation. Lots of them happen just because I run a cross a good deal, or find something really interesting.

However I do believe you should have two of your primary SD/HD firearms, either pistol or rifle. One of them may go down when you need them and you'll appreciate that spare.

How does that old saying go?..."Beware the man with one gun.He probably shoots it very well'

I have more than one gun and don't shoot any of them exceptionally well...but I like the fact that I have more than "one gun" :D
Its fun at the range, too.

Mark.

I really posted this thread because I have .45 1911 and I want to get a .44MAG. This 4" S&W 629 in particular for the wilderness:

Each gun I own is different and gives it's own satisfaction when shooting. I enjoy my .22LR because it can shoot all day on a brick or two of ammo, making it inexpensive to shoot. My Enfield gives that feeling of power when the trigger is pulled and the dust cloud emits from the berm beyond the target. It let's me know that my shoulder still has feeling. My 12 ga Mossberg gives my shoulder the same feeling except it's fun to disintigrate clay.

I have more of an interest in handguns than I do long guns because every model seems to have different characteristics. Although I only currently own two handguns and three longs. I'm saving my pennies to buy a revolver after I recover from Christmas bills.
