I have one 1911 and I was wondering what your reasons are for that second or third, fourth, etc. firearm/handgun purchase. I have one shotgun, one rifle and one handgun. What more do you need? This is the question i am faced with. It seems like the more guns you get, the less you shoot all of them as a whole. My Kimber shoots very accurate and is reliable, but most people have multiple firearms in multiple calibers... so what is your reason beyond collecting?

It all depends on use for purchasing a second. I currently have a Glock 35 that I use for home defense, range time and competition.

I'm pretty much set, but looking for a subcompact Glock in the same caliber, i.e. Glock 27 model. I'm planning on purchasing it later on the year to fight for a CCW permit here in CA.

My wife took the one I normally carry for her carry gun, and told me to pick another one out for me.

1. Despite what you read on the Errornet, guns break. No matter how "reliable". If you shoot them (many gun owners do not shoot them), they will malfunction and need to be repaired. If you have your gun at the gunsmith or manufacturer, what will you use then?

2. You gun may be taken as evidence in, Heaven forbid, an incident in which the police investigate. If the police have your gun, what will use then?

3. You may need to arm someone other than yourself, buddy, relative, girlfriend, wife, etc, who does not have a weapon. If you only have one gun, what will the other person use.

4. If you are going to be in a fight, Heaven forbid, and you know it, then you want multiple loaded weapons.

I like 4 guns for all my fighting guns: 1 gun ready, 1 in reserve in the safe, 1 at the gunsmith, 1 hidden off your property. Lots and lots of mags, lots and lots of ammo.

I have multiple guns.

The first two purchases were made of necessity. All since then have been based on desire.

I only really need one gun. But I sure do like to have one by the bedside...one to carry...One in the vehicle...a plinker...a hunter...a scatterer...a couple more defense guns just in case...and a couple of show pieces.

So...it just happened.

so what is your reason beyond collecting?
It makes me happy.

Never really evaluated my needs... just buy guns because I like them, I use them, and I can!

One advantage of having two of the same gun is magazines can be shared, helpful in a defensive situation. I need to pick up a second (and maybe a third) 1911 and a pair of M&P 9MMs.

It's not possible to justify expenditures on one's hobby, nor is it required to do so. I currently own five 1911s. Three Colts (Government Model I bought new in 1973, a Gold Cup and a .38 Super made in the later 1970s), an RIA in .38 Super and Daly lower with a Colt .22 unit I call the Dolt.

I don't actually need any of them, but I enjoy all of them.

You don't have explain to anyone why you want another gun. If people share you hobby you don't need to explain and if they don't then explaining won't help.

I think El T nailed it, especially with the first two reasons. Sure, there's all that "Beware the man with one gun... he probably knows how to use it." But, what happens when that one gun is down while you wait for a new extractor or firing pin, or it has been sent off for refinishing?

IMO, everybody should have at least 2, preferably 3 guns. So, if heaven forbid, you had one gun sent off for work and you were involved in a shooting (with the following temporary confiscation of that firearm that would entail), you still have one on hand if some buddies of bad guys show up at your doorstep for some revenge. They don't all need to be identical (although some argue that there are benefits to that, and they do have a point), but they should be reliable and in an effective caliber.

Its FUN!!!

Man cannot live on one caliber alone. That is my reason. But also, some guns are classics that I want to collect, some serve a specific need, some serve as great training tools, and some are just loads of fun.

Beyond collecting or fun, the different purposes category is very valid. A 1911 is a great SD or duty gun, but the full size might not be the best choice for CCW. The 500S&W that is a great companion for an Alaska trip would not be a good gun to teach a 12 year old the fundamentals of shooting. Ya see my point?

Um, reason? We need a reason for buying another gun? I guess I'm in big trouble....oh I have a reason...I WANTED IT and the other 50odd guns I own! And uh I could afford it so theres a reason!:)

Nth gun reasons

Because the voices in my head won't shut up until I do. Right now they are whispering "Swedish Mauser .... Springfield 1903A3 ...1909 Argentine Mauser...."

Just for fun...

So we can look like this: Without the make up.

Different tools for different needs, friend. Hog-hunting, home defense and squirrel-hunting or plinking, Duck hunting, and hypothetically repelling an invasion all have different requirements, not all of which can be adequately handled by one or two guns.

Redundancy in case of breakdown.

Variety being the spice of life, it's nice to switch off now and again. It's especially nice to have various loaner guns so you can take friends to the range with you, and find out what suits their grip and other needs.

If ammo in one chambering becomes scarce, it'd be nice to have something ELSE to shoot until availability improves (the recent x39 shortage, for example).

Collecting is a wonderful hobby. Your mind is like a dog, it needs a bone to chew on or it goes getting itself into trouble, most likely.

In a New Orleans/Katrina type of event, it's nice to have firearms to loan to the unprepared neighbors and nearby family.

I think you break even :neener:

My Gun Obsession started with a .22 rifle.. Then I wanted something with more power so I got a AR-15.. Then I wanted something to carry so I got a pistol :D

The others just keep following me home

Because the voices tell me too.

Mostly my sisters voice and my girlfriend's voice saying "That's nice, I'd like to shoot that."

so what is your reason beyond collecting?
Some guns I just WANT. I had 3 .45-caliber pistols before I got that Springfield Loaded 1911 just before Christmas, two of which were 1911s, but I got that one just because I wanted it. No doubt I'll be picking up more guns for no other reason than that, just like I guess most of us have done before.

What more do you need?

What does "Need" have to do with anything?

By your reasoning, everbody should only have one set of underwear...
Here is your posting with "underwear" replacing any reference to "firearm".

I have one underwear and I was wondering what your reasons are for that second or third, fourth, etc. underwear purchase. I have one underwear, (rest deleted for redundancy). What more do you need? This is the question i am faced with. It seems like the more underwear you get, the less you wear all of them as a whole. My underwear is reliable, but most people have multiple underwear in multiple 'brands'... so what is your reason beyond collecting? ;)
