With the popularity of the Mare's Leg lever action pistols, I have an idea....

Marlin Firearms, are you listening? You can put all those pipsqueaks to shame. What we need is a Mare's Leg version of the Marlin Model 1895 Cowboy, say a 12" barrel and four rounds of big, booming .45-70 goodness. Impractical, irresponsible...wouldn't it be grand?

It's not on their site now, but Wild West Guns in Alaska at one time had a 45/70 SBR available. Mean lookin' gun, that...

I like it.

And to make it actually possible to shoot, how about a 'squib' load that will barely make it out of the barrel [ like about 1000 FPS ] so it could actually be used.

I hope not! Maybe Marlin understands that it's just a silly marketing gimmick and would rather focus on using their rifle actions for rifles that you can actually use???

Actually ... how about a .22 Lever Action with a proper loading gate side loading thingie?
You are aware that .22lr ammo can be deformed by hand and that some rounds will be damaged by shoving them through a spring-loaded gate, around a bend, and into a spring-loaded tube, right?
The mechanism to allow gate-loading in a .22lr lever-gun doesn't exist (at least, not within the price-point that .22lr leverguns sell at)

I considered a 45-70 BFR pistol at the peak of the ammo shortages... never could find local .45 colt.. but could always find boxes of the wrist-abusing stuff.

Mares leg's extra weight might make that sort of thing more manageable... I'd be intrigued at the least.

And a lot of hands from wrists for the rest!

Humm... seems a tad much, might be more of a wrist wrencher that most mortal men would care to handle...

The original one made for Steve McQueen for the Wanted Dead of Alive TV series was in 44-40, however, the small pistol cartridges didn't film well, look cool enough, so he carried 45-70's on his cartridge belt... maybe this is where this comes from?

That's why I said they need to work on that.

Steve McQueen's gun was 44-40 but his ammo belt was full of 30-30 cartridges. The vintage TV station here plays all those old western shows....chris3

You have to know me to truely understand. I have shot 12 gauge 00 buck in a pistol gripped 870, S&W 44 mags and Freedom Arms 454 pistols over the years. A Mares leg weighs more than a cut down 870 and should be fun to shoot.

No- McQueen's belt held straightwalled .45-70 rounds, not bottlenecked .30-30.
