The .38/.357 is ideal isn't it???

I just read the opening line and think that you have to say ideal for what. Aren't the 22 and 44 magnum ideal too?:)

It's interesting that those who dismiss a particular caliber as ineffective for SD rarely volunteer to stand in front of one. ;)

I know that was a joke, but it's an oft-repeated fallacy. I wouldn't want someone to stand at the top of the stairway in my house and throw books at my noggin. Despite that, and despite the fact that I have many shelves full of books at the top of that staircase, I'm not planning to defend my family with hurled texts.

The fact that an experience would be unpleasant (and therefore not an experience that would be volunteered for) does not mean that it will end an attack. Otherwise, my 4 year old could just whine an intruder out of the house!

When you consider that you can go from a pocketable j-frame to a lever action 357 rifle with all the different range of loads available,it is pretty ideal!

I think the double action 4 inch 357 is one of the best compromises in poratble power accuracy and speed, when you add the factor of being able to download it to .38 special and its also a great handgun to learn on.

It's a great choice.

here we go with the word "perfect" again. Perfect in bear country, I think not, perfect for squirrels I think not again. Had you said perfect for self defense I could easily go with that.

Overall, it might be the best do everything round, but .327 would work great for many applications. It's probably even better in a small snub package than .357/.38...... if only ammo was really available.
