Ahhhh!!!!! the wife wants my new 642..... !!!!!

Maybe I will buy her one if she signs a contract saying if she leaves the gun stays.. LOL

newman32 - Angry pictures?

1. You will get the right grip after about the third round you fire.

2. I like the Buff Bore standard pressure 158gr heavy load (C) for a non +P. They are very controllable, mild recoil, and are effective. I do not believe the 110gr is enough bullet. Go as big as you can.

Helstrm - Get her this one and she will never leave.

Therefore, In theory, I suppose you could shoot a 38 Super in a 357 Magnum chambered revolver. But I would NOT recommend doing so.

Thanks jad. I didn't have any problems with 50 rounds of .38 Super through my .357; however, do you know if I damaged my gun?

The funny thing is, the .38 Super cartridges fit perfectly into a .357 cylinder, and eject flawlessly.

You know, guys...I'm kinda depressed...

After about 1 1/2 weeks (hey, free time has been short) I just finished reading all 146 pages of this thread...and I STILL don't have a 642 for myself yet.

I have been strongly considering this revolver for a while now, and after seeing this thread off and on, I decided to start reading it and I'm glad I did. All you guys did was confirm that this is definitely the route I want to go.

Hopefully, I will have the new pocket protector before the end of the month (S&W extended the offer on the range bag one more month). All I'm waiting on is the early payout on my bonus, then it's run to the store time!

anyone know if the 642s sold at academy are round butt or square butt?

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe ALL 642's (all j frames?) are round butt.

BTW: How much are those going for right now? I'm in the Houston area and plan on buying one soon.

#1 Crazy or not, this is my first wheelgun. In a two-handed grip, I can't seem to find a comfortable spot for my support-hand thumb. Any tips????

I have found the grip information here:

http://www.shootingusa.com/PRO_TIPS/MICULEK2/miculek2.html

to be helpful in becoming proficient with my 642. He speaks specifically about the J-Frame revolver near the bottom of the page.

I hope this helps...

they are going for $372 + tax

That is excellent news, thanks!

Between what should be coming to me from my company's early payout bonus, and a little bit of cash savings, I should be able to pick one up before the end of the month and have some money left over with which to feed it.

Then, I need to get one of Mr. Mika's holsters and my CHL so I can actually put it to use. I figure that while waiting for the CHL, I can dry fire and live fire to smooth the trigger and get used to it, and I can carry it around the house to break in the holster and get used to that as well.

I know it's been said before, but this thread, and everyone in it just rocks!

just picked up my 642 it is excellent! will post some pics later. trigger feels great, just dont like the lock.
is it okay to shoot lead bullets out of this gun?

i plan on getting the model 60 lady smith as well, see which one i like better.

What is the difference in the Airweight and the ladysmith anyway?
You got me curious with that question. Here's what I found:

The current catalog list 3 ladysmith revolvers, the 36LS, 60LS and the 642LS.

The 36LS is a steel .38+P, 20oz.
The 60LS is a Stanless .357/.38+P 21.5oz.
The 642LS is a Alloy/Titanium .38+P 14.5oz.
(There was a reference to some type of 9mm bottom feeder thingy but I didn't look at it)

I saw a reference to a 317LS Alloy .22, but the current online catalog only lists a 317 Alloy .22, 8 rounds at 10.5 oz. (a very interesting little gun, just like a 642 with a hammer, I like it...)

It seems the main point of these are the smaller rosewood grips (I like them too, and you can order them from S&W)

The main difference in the 642/642LS is of course the LS is listed as Alloy/Titanium and is $200.00 more (list price) and 1/2 oz. lighter.

The ladysmith line goes back to the early 1800's and has been made off and on since then.

So, Helstrm, thx for that question. You might have just help me spend all my money on that 317 .22 8 shot!

anyone know if it's okay to shoot lead out of the 642 or lady smith 60?

here is my new 642 next to the 1006. wish they made a 686 w/ the same finish. i would be all over it.

JT1,

Great Work! One minor correction - the 242 is an Al frame, SS barrel liner, and Ti cylinder 7-shooter in an L-frame. It looks like my 296 - same size - different sized (and number) cylinder holes - and smaller barrel bore. I wish I could find a 'nice' one - reasonably priced. About as likely as airborne porkers.

Here is my 296 with my 642, for size comparison for the 242 & 642. I know not why they numbered it so...

I'm not much of a "joiner" but this thread is so good I suppose I should. I've carried a 640-1 for years and also usually carry a current model 442 as BU. The 442 is the only S&W revolver with the IL that I own. I hate them but the 442 is such a great handgun I (try to) ignore it. Both the Centennials are butter smooth. I'm 6'3 and 220lbs so I pocket carry the 640-1 frequently. All you need is a good gunbelt and pocket holster. I also carry the 640 in a Tucker IWB. As much as I like them, when the weather allows I carry a SIG IWB.

B]yongxingfreesty[/B] - Since you asked twice, I guess it's a real question. Yes you can use lead bullets in your shiny new 642. Cograts on you new gun.

Nice research, JT.
Just trying to keep up with the Nem's.

newman32 - You are welcome, hope it helped.

Stainz - Thx for the info, correction made.

flc -Welcome to the 642 club. We are glad to have you. I'm not much of a "joiner" either but if you are going to join anything this is the place. I agree about the IL, no one here cares for them but if you "clean" them properly they will never give you any trouble. BTW, one of our members here, 1BLINDREF has a SIG club over in the autoloader section you might want to look into. Again welcome.
