The Steel Snub Club

My friends know my opinion of hairweight guns.
The only alloy revolvers that have any creedence with me are the Colt Cobra and Agent and even then I prefer the Detective Special.

From a 2" .357 mag to a 3" .44 mag all of my shortschnoz wheelguns are steel.
(and UNported)

My Ruger .357mag SP-101's, 2" & 3" are my faves. I recently aquired a S&W 65-5 in .357mag that is getting some holster time as well. If I want a big boomer in a little package......it's my Taurus Stainless 415, 2" in .41mag.

Ruger SP101

I have 2 SP101's in .357 Mag.
Carry one 24/7.
Rugged, good looking, Ruger.
DSW loves 'em too.
Can't ask for more.

Yep. J-frame 'Smiths are great weapons, no matter the material. But let me state my preference for the 642 Airweight, and I'll tell you why: when I wear a pair of nylon soccer shorts, a Coolmax t-shirt, and a pair of flip flops (standard summer weekend fare where I live), I can carry the 16-oz. Airweight in an Uncle Mike's or DeSantis pocket holster in the shorts, with no sagging of the pocket. Or I can carry it IWB with no sagging of the waistband. I mean, it is completely invisible. And I ALWAYS have a gun. I don't know if that would be possible with a steel-framed J-frame.... YMMV...

Nobody disputes the desirability of a lightweight alloy small frame revolver (my choice is the S&W 340PD) for pocket or waistband CCW when wearing beltless nylon shorts or swimtrunks.

If attire permits, however, I'll go with an all steel example of a compact wheelgun every time, carried at the waistline.

I actually find the 2.5" barrel Ruger SP101 as easy to carry as the snubby S&W 649 or 60.
The steel frames just don't wear out, shoot loose or mar as easily as the Airweight and AirLite Smiths.

As strange as this may sound, my least favorite of my wheelies is the one I have with me the most, a 342. When I bought it I wanted a 642 and was hoping to find a used one to save some money, but it seems people tend to hang on to those! I got the 342 used for about what I would have paid for a new 642. For all-day pocket carry it's tough to beat but I definitely want a steel J. I really want an original (.38) model 60. My dealer has a few 36's that I thinking about "settling for" but I will definitely have one or the other soon! (Yeah, I know, "Get Both!")

I've got a S&W Model 36 no-dash that I obtained from the client of a lawyer friend who was headed to the Graybar Inn. It goes in my hip pocket whenever I answer the doorbell. It's got Uncle Mike's "Boot" grips. I use the Federal 158gr. LSWC-HP "FBI" load in it.

640. It's ugly, it's "heavy", but it works.

Note the quotes. I really don't have any qualms with the weight, whatsoever.

Mike

Just bought this Taurus 905. Keeps me all 9mm. I called Taurus and ordered 10 more moon clips, they arrived in 3 days. I carry it in the pocket holster, or a lightweight nylon IWB holster when my clothing it too light to carry the Glock 19. I am not a revolver guy, but I must admit that this works when I'm in T shirt and shorts.

I'm lusting after this Camfour exclusive M36 Nickel at the moment. Just when I thought a new steel J-frame meant LadySmith.

Do those look like the same wood grips the 36LS gets?

I'm trying to get pricing on the 36 Nickel through my dealer, if it's not too crazy I think I'll go for it. :)

Concealed Carry requires commitment.........

You should carry what You can shoot well. For Me a steel J-frame is what will work for Me. Emphisis on Me. Yes, I've owned some Aieweights over the years, but they have been traded off. Since I no loger have to go to an office, I can wear pretty much what I want to. For example, Cargo pants or Carhartt bibs have generous pockets and just are made for a J-frame and a pocket holster. My "snubbie" is a S&W Model 65 with a 3" barrel. I carry it every day. It may be "cheating" to call a six-shot, steel, K-frame a "Snubbie," but "if you ain't cheatin', you ain't trying."

You can't go wrong with the good ol' Chief's Special.
Here's two I used to own.

An early five screw 1953 pre-36 on the left and a three screw 1958 Model 36 on the right.

Notice the shorter grip frame using I-frame Grips and the smaller round triggerguard on the 1953 model.
It also has the old I-frame hammer.

Also notice the shorter shallower cylinder cylinder flutes on the 1958 model.

I had a chance to buy a 1951, three digit serial number, first year of production one in even better condition that those but it was WAY beyond my means.
