Thanks!

Thanks to all you kind folks who sent your welcome and info. Much appreciated. I will try to answer all your questions.

JFH, no I haven't seen cornerdcat site yet. That will be my next stop.

Thanks for the advice on the spring kit. I realize that strengthening my fingers and hands is important and have a "squeezy thing" to help. I've been ill for months and am quite wimpy right now. But both my boyfriend and I found the "kick" to be bruising in crotch of hand as well. Considering he shoots .45s, it was a surprise to him!

I've been thinking that learning to shoot and getting a CCWL would be a good idea since I moved into Columbus proper in January. Time constraints (full-time college student) and opportunity had stymied me. Wonderful new man in my life has convinced me it's time, given me the opportunity and provided support so that I will be taking my CCW class in 2 weeks. He has been training me well in the meantime.

Why this particular gun? He wanted me to have a small revolver .38 or greater with enclosed hammer so it wouldn't get caught on purse, pocket, holster.

Straight-shooter - cudos to your wife. Seems like this is THE CCW to carry.

fiVe, glockman19 - thank you for your kind welcome

jt1 - I do know about the special caps available. I will purchase soon. I don't want to change stock boot grips (hopefully I know what that means) as I spent the extra $ for CT.

Mode of carry? Because of who I am and how I must dress, purse is the best option. I realize the danger of having my purse taken from me. Found website with purses designed for that purpose. Regular purse will not work well enough, in my opinion. I can't wear baggy cargo pants in my profession. Good option for casual though.

And I like your quote about your friends. Hahaha!

DAdams - See above. Working on fingers. (piano teacher and typist, evidently not the same type of strength)

Just so everyone knows: I did NOT rob Vance's! However, looking at the websites, I'm beginning to wonder myself!

I have no idea about "smaller CT 450s". I do have the "cool factor" though. My CT grips are original, the gun is new and has the insignia.

Again, I thank you all for the warm welcome and the great information.

And now, a quote my beloved sent me, from George Washington:
“Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself- They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence... From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable... The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference- they deserve a place of honor with all that is good."? George Washington

<Comes up for air momentarily after two weeks of business hell.
I haven't worked this hard since ... since ... grad school.
Why, why, why did I think going into business was a good idea?>

Ardito, we're glad you're here.
Yes, Corneredcat is excellent reading.
Highly recommended.

642 + CT + Mika + Bianchi = 642 Head.
<Puts on math teacher hat.>

OK, it's clear we need an algebra review.

Quadratic equations are those with at least one "squared" term.
That means there must be at least one term (the parts between the "+" signs) that has an exponent of 2.

That equation is linear (no exponents other than 1).

Thus, the equation needs revision.
You're going to need at least one squared term to be a quadratic.
Otherwise, it's linear, and linear is boring.

OK, I've got to go back to work.

See you next week.
Pop quiz on differential equations
(which are required to calculate acceleration differences between 135 gr v 158 gr).

Nem

((642 + CT + Mika) + Bianchi²) + 642 Club = 642 Head∑ <-- not sure what N-ary Summation(that last symbol) is, but it looks mathematical

If the above is correct, it will become the official 642 Club Quadratic equation. (per kiNg fiVe's decree, boring linear equations are forbidden here)

Ah, much better.

Yeah, that exponent of 2 on the Bianchi does it.

Now, at the risk of offending our kiNg, and being beheaded by ... hmm, who is the official beheader (?), may I suggest:

  • ∑ means "sum of", so it might be better on the far left side.
  • And one might consider putting the exponent on either "642" or "642 club", since it'd be better for them to grow geometrically than holsters. (Unless you want only 1 642 but multiple pocket holsters to carry it in ...)

Something like: ∑((642² + CT + Mika) + Bianchi) + (642 Club)² = 642 Head

With a little algebra, we might simplify that, but I'm back at work after only 3 hours sleep, so I'll have to pass for now ...

Nem - I believe the (Bianchi²) refers to two speed strips. This would be the recommend carry.

...calculate acceleration differences between 135 gr v 158 gr...
Are we not specifically concerned with the terminal deceleration of said missles?

I think the issue here is the excessive amount of sleep you are getting ;)

Ah, yes, JT, speed strips. Got it. Makes sense.

As for acceleration/deceleration, at the ranges that most of us use these revolvers, I'm most concerned with acceleration. :)

And yeah, sleep ... remind me again, please: what's sleep?

HP bullet for 642

Hey Everyone, I was talking to a guy at the range today and he was trying to tell me about a 38 HP round made for the little J-frame Airweight 642 for defensive carry. I think the load was pretty light/w 115 or similar weight bullet. Any of you guys know what he's talking about?

Thankd,
JimK

I never have posted a pic of my 642, so, I'll do that now along with another pic of my new 442. I changed the grips on both. There's just something about that retro look that I like.:D

Hey, JT, look what I just picked up. I haven't had a chance to go through it yet, but I couldn't pass it up seeing how it was a signed copy.

All of this talk of formulas reminds me of this one - Area formula: A=(pi)r2. But, when I mention this to folks where I'm from they are quick to remind me that "pie are round, cornbread are square".:neener:

S.O.D. - It takes a wise person to know it's time to quit while you're ahead.

fiVe - ∑(((642 + CT + Mika) + Bianchi²) + 642 Club) = 642 Head: I think that's it!

hjimk66 - Was it this round? http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/Corbon 38 Special Ammo.htm

Phydeaux642 - Now that's a real treasure, signed by Mr. Jordan! How come I never find deals like that. Take good care of it...Cornbread^R²...:D

Ardito40: Welcome to the "First Post Brotherhood/Sisterhood" of the 642 Club! I too made my first post on this very thread and it's nice to have you here!

fiVe: I love the equation! It should be put into record as the official equation of The 642 Club! I cannot take credit for much in this world, but I do believe I coined the term "642 Head" way back when and the thought of having an equation attached to it gives me further pride...

To MassMark: Please accept a heartfelt, thread-wide, official 642 Club thank you for coining our beloved title "642 Head". (post #3862, page 155) You are a wordsmith extraordinaire, and you are officially charged to take credit for this!

Because of MassMark's superb work, I am able to make the following official 642 club proclamation.

The official 642 Club quadratic equation is:

∑(((642 + CT + Mika) + Bianchi²) + 642 Club) = 642 Head

So let it be and heretofore it is thusly recorded in the 642 Club Blog of Knowledge.

Peace to you all,
kiNg fiVe

I should have noted the page my 642 post is on. I'll never find it!

On occaision I have been using this under shirt from 5.11 for 642 carry
40011_010_1_ugr.gif

It's a 5.11 product I got from Streicher's http://www.511tacticalhq.com/ProductDetail.aspx?Catalog=511_UnderGear&Category=TOPS&Prod=RR-411

I fell between two of their sizes so got the smaller one. It is very snug so it doesn't shift. Not the fastest access, but very concealable.

ETA: I have ordered several items from Streicher's and am impressed with their fast delivery. 2-3 days via USPS to my PO box.

fiVe: You are truly something else - thank you for the accolades. I just had to explain to my coworkers why I'm chuckling and grinning from ear to ear, (it's unusual at my office)... I think they initially thought I was surfing for NSFW, but just rolled their eyes when I explained what thread I was reading, (they are hopelessly anti-gun). I have however made inroads with one of my coworkers who now enjoys an occasional lunch at the indoor range near here. Victories no matter how small are still sweet....

devilc: I'm not sure how it would work out - I would imagine that it would take some doing. Some are using paint to highlight their front post. I'm going the opposite route and am working hard to ignoring mine altogether...

devilc - Welcome to the 642 Club. It's good to have you here. As far as sight modifications to the X42's (we are talking X42's?) it can be done but here are a few things to consider. Your gun will have to be modified by milling off the existing sight, milling a mounting slot and drilling for a pin. The big dot and other similar sights being installed on the M&P and other new J-frames do have their place and are a significant improvement over iron sights for aimed fire, and that's the real issue here. As alluded to by Sir MassMark the very nature of these guns dictate their use as a close in, point and shoot self defense CCW's and in the real world at typical SD ranges with the stress and time factor it is unlikely the sights will even come into play. There are some of us here that train almost exclusively in point shooting and close quarter combat drills and with just a little training the accuracy and speed that can be achieved is quite impressive. So from my perspective lasers and improved fixed sights fall into the same category, nice to have, usefully under some circumstances (especially the laser, could be a lifesaver under specific conditions but also can contribute to poor basic skills if used too early in the training cycle) and one more thing to break/worry about. I have actually been considering milling off the front sight altogether, but I have not reached that point yet.

callgood - Welcome to the Club. We are happy you have aboard. Interesting products from 5.11, I can see applications few a few of them.

Sir MassMark
- Congrats, NSFW?

∑(((642 + CT + Mika) + Bianchi²) + 642 Club) = 642 Head

Nice work on completing the Adams~fiVe~jt1~MassMark~Nematocyst Postulate.

Anyone else who had a hand in this step forward.

devilc and callgood, welcome to our asylum.

5.11 Nice undergarment, for carry. I think they would do a great job of concealing both my 642 and my man boobies. :uhoh: Er I mean my massive pectorals.

devil, once you price out the night sights it might be more cost effective to put on a set of Crimson Trace grips. Total cost of ownership might even be less, but with the CTs a number of issues are addressed. Grip, felt recoil, day and night effectiveness, psychological deterence etc. Just a thought. I agree with jt. it probably will be a very fast point and shoot event. I do like the Trijicon tritium sights (big dot) on my 340, which has CTs also.

Equations?!

I think some of you guys are a round short of a six shooter if you know what I mean. ;)

Not only am I a round short, sometimes I think I'm loaded with Snap Caps.:D

There is a local pawn shop with a used no-lock 442 for $399. They seem to be firm on the price, but would probably knock $25 off for cash. I know I can buy a new 642 for the same price at a Sportsman's Warehouse. I really don't have the expertise to evaluate used guns, but this one has some visible wear to it.

What does the club think? Should I go new or used w/ no-lock? If no-lock, what do I need to look for to evaluate the gun? Also, how would I know if it is +P rated?

Thanks in advance for your help. Robert Mika e-mailed me today to tell me he is starting work on my holster. I will post pics of whatever I end up buying to fill it up.
