The 642 club

Look what I found!

I know, it's the 642 Club, but you got to see what I found in a local gun store today! A model 49 NO DASH! Got it for $279. I think I did good!:what:

What you think??:uhoh:

Sloman,

Really purty. Ya' done good.

There's something about the convexly curved line of the metal over that hammer area that I've always found ... almost mysterious, and oddly beautiful in its own unique way.

Let us know how is shoots.

Two things--
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Concerning my "all snubbies welcome" remark, I think we should open our door to any and all. Revolvers (especially snubbies) are my favorite firearm because they are elegant, simple, reliable. The S&W 637 is the hammered cousin to the 642, and it would be wrong to refuse relatives. ;) No one can argue the beauty of a Colt Det. Special or a S&W Chief, and the humpbacks also have a special place in my heart. Taurus has similar representations, as well--the 650 family, 850 family, etc. In my mind, the 642 embodies all these. Many don't like the 642's looks or just prefer others, but it is my favorite. To me, it is the workhorse of concealed carry--always there (almost unnoticeable in your pocket or on your belt), always ready to do business, if needed, in a serious way--just like its forefathers, only better IMO. As we all know, its design eliminates "hammer snag" and "humpback lint", so of the snubbies, I think the 642 is the best. I like to think of it as the marquee model to represent all pocket snub-nosed revolvers. I work on a military base, so I can't carry all the time, but when I can, I do, and my carry configuration is the 642 in a Mika round cut with one Bianchi speed strip.
2. jad0110 is correct--at this time, we are the biggest thread on THR--the most replies and most views. I am humbled by and proud of (can a man be humble and proud?) this milestone. As I said in post# 1001, it is all the fine contributors who have made this possible. I am most proud to be part of such a fine group of people--a group that is expanding. We are doing a good thing here. No one can question the popularity of the 642. It is definitely your always-have-go-to weapon. I'm glad we are propagating--more converts, more business to Smith & Wesson. Keep posting!! I've got my sights on post# 2001. :D
Peace,
fiVe
"hammer snag" and "humpback lint"
So glad I was here to read it. ;)
Just got my new 642 today at the gun show after selling my 637 a couple months ago I really missed a airweight 38 and plan on keeping this one.
BTW got it out the door for 375.00. Also why was a cable lock in the box when the gun has a internal lock, don't really make sense and my old 637 didn't come with a cable lock.
Good Question!
THAT is a really good question! Anybody know? :confused:
I don't have a 642 but I do have the 638 which is the Bodyguard version of the 642. I'm very happy I bought this revolver. Great club to be a part of for sure...
Bodyguard
I love the Bodyguard! I have 3 of them! Something about those odd looking buggers that is appealing! Plus, you can actually grip a Bodyguard higher than a 642 because of the hump!
:D
New 642 without the lock its a done deal, it was really simple taking off the sideplate and disabling the lock was even simpler. BTW I ended up stripping the whole pistol and let me tell you that spring for the hand is a bugger, I had to download a schematic to figure it out. That lock is never gonna work again and from looking at the gun you would never know its been disabled , test fired it with the lock engaged and it still fires and didnt even make a scratch on it/:D
Uh, if you ever decide to sell it -- do be sure to mention that tidbit of information to the new owner :uhoh:
p.s I like my 642-2, but would love to find a pre-lock 642-1...for strictly aesthetic reasons.
A few rounds tested!
Hey Gang, hope you don't mind me throwing this in here....I tested a few rounds when I was test firing my 'new' model 49 Bodyguard this morning. This informal testing took place at approx. 5' into wet phone books (I call it "Poor Man's Ballistic Gelatin" LOL!). From left to right the rounds are:
*Winchester Ranger 110gr. JHP +P+ *Speer 135gr. +P Gold Dot *Corbon 110gr. +P DPX
49androunds.gif
38rounds.gif
The DPX penetrated the most out of all of them. I was saddened by the Win. +P+ performance.:banghead:
Interesting Note: my all steel Bodyguard (M49) only weighs 5 ozs. more than my airweight Bodyguard (M38). Dang! Feels heavier than that!
By the way, I got a Bell Charter Oaks holster for sale that fits the j frame if anyone interested.
My black 642
I just got my refinished 642 from S&W. The old finish was peeling. Here's some pics.
Is that a warranty refinish or a refinish that YOU paid for? I think the two tone looks kinda cool.
Tell me a little about the front sight you have on there too.....
I paid $75 for the refinish. S&W paid one way shipping because of the peeling but I had to pay for the Black finish. I had Ahlman's in Morristown, MN. install the fiber optic in the front sight. They drilled hole and cut groove in the front sight blade. The fiber optic works well. The CT grips lazer works better. It is a good combo though.
Thank you for opening the doors to those of us who do not own an actual 642.
I have a S&W M36 I inherited from my mama, a Taurus Titanium 651 with a CT LaserGrip, a Taurus 605 SS 3", and a Taurus Titanium 617 in Bright Blue. I have hit all around the 642, but never hit right on.
However, each of these snubs I own holds a place near and dear to my heart for the very reasons you all love your 642's. Handy, light-weight, concealable, and adequate for most "social situations".
I have Pachy grips on the 36 and the 605 and I use mostly 158 LSWCHP+P for year-round carry except in the 36. It is so "special" that I use Federal Personal Defense ammo in it, and only carry it occaisionally.
All have been carried as primary at one time or another for a few days, and all have been used as BUG on more than one occaision. Any pair of these would leave me feeling adequately armed most days although I often carry one of these as BUG to a 45 Semi.
Thanks again for allowing me to "join the club".
I love all the snub's;Bodyguards are very cool in a wierd sort of way!I bought one of the new 37-2's while they were available,and use it for CCW.Great gun,great thread!!:cool:
Just got mine today! Got it in my pocket in a Desantis Nemesis. I get the feeling I will carry this alot more than my govt model.:D
Now that my internal lock is permanently disabled does anyone know who offers a oversized thumbpiece that will cover the lock, kinda like the older S&W kit guns had.
