Curious about my 442. I prefered it over a 642 because i just liked the looks better - you know black is beautiful and all. A couple posts have mentioned it was less expensive than the 642. Is that true or is that just, umm, prejudice? Mine has sweet rosewood grips too!

The 442 was 60 dollars higher than the
642-2 i bought at the local sportsmans
warehouse.When i asked why i just got
the deer in the headlights look from
the clerk.

The 442 is ~$2 more from buds last time I checked. I prefer the black, but oh well. Maybe I'll have my 642 birdsong black t'd or something down the road.

My snubbies...here, gone, here again, staying

I have owned several 642's and 442's over the past few years. I always did better with larger handguns, so the snubbies went in and out of the collection. I have become more serious about CCW in the past year.

Ironic how things change quickly. I recently totalled my car in an accident and lost my job, so I had to decide what stayed and what went. The latest 642 in the collection stayed and everything else got sold to cover bills...wasn't sure how long unemployment woul take to get & how long until I get my next job.

I'm still not the best shot with it, yet up close I'll probably need to point shoot it anyway. BTW...pocket carry; pants get Uncle Mike's Sidekick; coat gets DeSantis Nemesis...Bianchi Speed Strip for CCW backup; HKS speedloader for home backup...selected load is Hornady XTP 125gr JHP non +p

to answer a question posed on another page

"Is anybody carrying standard pressure .38 Spl loads, or all +P's?"

Standard pressure hollow point loads available:

Winchester Silvertip 110 grain, Federal Personal Defense Hydrashock 110 grain, Hornady XTP 125 grain & 158 grain, ?Corbon DPX 110 grain?, Ultramax remanufactured 125 grain

I personally use the Hornady XTP in 125 grain. I wish that Speer would develop a 125 grain Gold Dot load in non +p...much like the ole' Federal Nyclad 125 grain

My snubbies come and go too.

I had a nice 442 but when my daughter got her carry license she took it away from me. :cuss: So I got myself an nice new 642. I let my wife shoot it a few times and she took it for her own. :cuss: So I found a brand new but older model 36. It has a shrouded (I think that is the right term) which I like a bit better because I can shoot it single action.;) However I don't care for the original wood girps much. So I am going to find a set of rubberized similar to what was on the 642 and 442.

Y'all were right!!

Uncharacteristicly I purchased a 642 based on what I read on this thread. I must say gentleman & ladies, y'all were right.

Pocket Carry is real nice.

Shot today for first time with 30 rounds Rem UCC 38s and was nicely grouped at 10 and 15 ft.

Shot 135 GDHP's at 10' and 15' and while the recoil against my palm was stiff, still nice grouping.

Whoda thought.

"Whoda thought" is one way to put it ... ;)

I also held off a long time before picking up my 642-1, and once I discovered how much easier it was to carry than my 649 Bodyguard and SP-101 I spent some time mentally kicking myself for not having tried one sooner.

I wish that Speer would develop a 125 grain Gold Dot load in non +p...much like the ole' Federal Nyclad 125 grain

I also miss the Federal Nyclad standard pressure 125gr load.

OK - my lack of knowledge will show

What is the difference between a 642-2 and a 642-1, or any other 642 versions that are out there? Thanks for your patience during my 'education'.

And by the way, I got my Mika pocket holster today in the mail... nice ... real nice.

Can I join? Not exactly a 642, but...this thread inspired the purchase. Brand new today, I have not yet fired it. It'll ride in the Nemesis I picked up along with it, or the Smartcarry that currently houses my PM9.

summarizing the differences

"the difference between a 642-2 and a 642-1, or any other 642 versions "

first off: 642=stainless; 442=carbon steel

next: 642 (no dash)=the original variant; does not have the "magnum frame" extension at the back of the opening where the cylinder swings into the frame; usually polished steel parts, NOT rated for +p loads

more: 642-1=the first alteration in design; has the "magnum frame" extension at the back of the opening where the cylinder swings into the frame; not sure about finish on steel parts (guessing bead blasted); rated for +p loads

last: 642-2=the newest alteration in design; basically a 642-1 model with the integral lock system (ILS); bead blasted finish on steel parts

the 442 series follows the same alteration designations...442, 442-1, 442-2

642? 342? 442?

Folks,

I thought I'd throw my two cents worth in. I am a police officer and I carry my 342 in an Eagle Industries Upside-Down (UAH) ankle holster 24/7. Very comfortable and reliable; you can even jog with it on.

Bullet selection in the snubbies? One of 2 loads. The Cor-Bon DPX or PowrBall. These are the ONLY two loads that fully penetrated 4 layers of denim in recent tests that penetrated and expanded as advertised, no others did. All the other hollow pointed ammo simply clogged up with denim and became "hardball".

I shoot 100 rounds every 3 months to be proficient. Although you only have a short barrel, you can still be accurate and fast if you practice routinely.

JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

Speer Gold Dot

The local gun shop said the Speer Gold Dot was the way to go in a snubbie as it was engineered for it. Any experience with that as a 38+p load for penetration, etc...?

$ .02

The Speer load was designed at the request of NYPD for their officers who utilize older S&W 640's after Federal announced that they were discontinuing production of the Nyclad Hollowpoints. Somewhere on the blasted internet is information showing the results of tests that were conducted by Speer. I think it is in PDF form. I used to have it on the hard drive, but had to dump alot of files to improve reliability.

Mika Pocket Holster

Ok, ok, I get it, I need a Mika! Got my buddy JimmyC preaching it on another forum and now all you guys join in, OK I'LL GET ONE!!!!!!

Really glad you guys tipped me off to the Nemesis, I have an Uncle Mikes now and was debating on buying a Nemesis or a Mika. Decision made and no money wasted, I am in your debt!

A few questions from a new guy...

Hi all,

A new guy here. I was at a local store yesterday and they showed me a nice 642. I had previously thought I wanted a smaller auto loader for CCW but the owner really stressed the virtues of the little 642. I handled it and it really felt very nice.

How does the alum body hod up with CCW in your pocket? I see that most have a pocket holster but does the alum body get beat up with normal use? Maybe I'm just from the old school and think that steel is better....

Also, what is a good price for a used 642? budsgunshop.com has it for about $325 and my local dealer is $365. What does a good condition used one go for?

Thanks,

Techieguy

I pocket carry a 642 every day. A friend of mine couldn't believe that I was carrying one time when I was wearing shorts! The only time I don't carry it is when it gets really cold here, in the 40's, and I wear jeans. The Kahr K9 goes along then.

Another friend said "my gun is so big and bulky" and that was his excuse for not carrying.

Techieguy,it really depends on where you
live, here in arizona i wouldn't pay over
300 dollars for a used one.The only
exception would be a very, very lightly
used one,i paid $329.00 for my 642-2.
You'll find some people that would pay
more for a pre lock model (642,642-1)
compared to a 642-2 which has the lock.

Rejoined the 642 club this past week. Had a 642-1 bought in 2001 and foolishly sold a couple of years later. :banghead: For the past three months I have been looking for another 642-1 (+P rated with no internal lock) , but discovered they are becoming very difficult to find. Anyway, thanks to a poster on this forum, I located one out of state and quickly snatched it up. Here's a photo:

Well Im half way in the 642 Club! Im waiting on my 642 with factory installed CT 305's to come in a day or so! I didnt know if I would like the 305's so I bought a pair of 205's too. Ill put the 205's on when I get it and Ill have a backup pair. I might put the 305's on my old ladys 60LS. I went ahead and bought 2 Mika pocket holsters(one round/one square).
