I just got a 642-2 it's my second revolver and I've shot a few others 'sides my other a 4" Ruger Security Six, it seems to group tighter than the Ruger when I took it to the range, a few five shot groups at 21' that would fit inside a playing card once I got the sights figured out, one a three hole group with five shots with +Ps before I packed it out so I'm pretty pleased as there aren't really any other choices for a "hammerless" out there as all the other choices seem to be only bobbed external hammer models with or without SA.

anyway the cylinder locks up well front to back but rotates just as much when the trigger is pulled back as it is when you close the cylinder and in both directions where as my Ruger had no play at all when I got it except on one chamber with the trigger pulled and is just as loose as the 642 when at rest. I was wondering if this should be a concern but since it shoots at poa I don't mind unless it is an issue that will result in other things down the road.

also I'm not too fond of the trigger or the trigger pull and was wondering what the options are. I read that dry firing can make it a bit better and that a little jewelers rouge at the contact points in the gun with a little dry firing and then take it out and replace the oil, also I remember reading just cleaning out the insides helped but that mat have been on an older gun. this thread is pretty long and it would be good to have all the pertinent owning info in one place, also I was wondering about the MIM parts and if they can be replaced with the older ones that are supposed to have a better pull because of different geometry. also the shape of the trigger likes to pinch the back of my trigger finger I don't like that much.

thanks,

thanks

I'm planning on putting on a set of Hogue soft rubber grips.

My hypothesis is that, in addition to allowing one more finger on the grip,
they've got a more substantial backstrap that should eliminate that "pinch" issue.

Won't be able to get it into my pocket as easily, but not a problem for me:
I want to carry that little 642 in a belt holster, IWB or OWB, anyway.

PS: <totally unrelated to the 642>

I just noticed that I got post #808 in this thread.

For anyone interested in making and dancing to electronic music,
808 is an interesting number.

Grips for 642

After reading many forums I have decided to purchase Hogue Monogrip Model 60000. With the softer grip and additional pinky space will help my wife to better hold on during firing.
I'm still looking for the approprite ammo for target practice and final in home ammo.
So far I found Walmart has Remington UMC +P 125g for $10.99.
They also have Wincheter 100 rounds for $19.99 but they say fully jacketed and I'm not sure if they is an issue or not.
What's you thoughts on this ammo?

Iggy in Arizona :)

iggyAZ,

After you get your grips:

1) Please post a pic to show us how they look on your 642

2) Keep us posted on how well they work, how you like them, etc.

642nd Post

Since this is officially post #642 for me, I just had to post it in the 642 Club thread.

I'm still most pleased with my 642. Along with my Mika round-cut pocket holster, the 642 is the best concealed carry configuration (IMHO).

Happy & safe shooting!

Regards,

I was convinced

I've read and read this forum for months and everyone sold me on this gun. THANKS! :)

Today I picked up a 642 for myself. Due to my reading what others have been saying, I knew I'd be getting one so I already had a Mika holster, speed strips in advance to today. I still what to change the grips but that can wait for now. Since getting home today, I've dry fired into snap-cap until my finger is ready to revolt on me. I gotta replace those springs!

This Saturday I'm off to the range to try out some Gold Dot 125gr and 135gr with some Federal Hydra Shok 129gr and Remington Saber 125gr rounds. I'll also take a bunch of generic FMJ and see how long my finger/hand survives.

For carrying, this wheel gun will be much nicer this summer than my XD45, SA Ultra Compact 45, or Browning BDA 380. Ya think?

bulbboy

Yes, I like my BDA. I've liked my blued model for a number of years now and I have no plans to let it go. :D I just wish the grip emblems wouldn't fall out so often (I keep a supply of em' on hand).

After getting the 642 the other day, I'm sure that one will be a keeper too.

Where is the best PRICE?

It seems that the price varies for a S&W 642 around the country.
I got mine in Phoenin AZ on sale for $329.99 from Cabela's which is a big sporting goods store.
What is your best price and where?

Well I have just finnished reading every single post from the beginning, and I find myself itching for for a 442 (just like the looks, sry).

must resist urge to buy another gun...

If you like the gun enough to read this entire thread, you ain't got a prayer!!

Go buy one!!!

I paid $339.00 at the Sportsman warehouse in
N. phoenix for my 642-2.That was 6 months ago
so the price may have changed by now.

I paid $339.00, plus tax for my 642-2 about a month ago. I got it from my local FFL which is www.sportingarms.com

My local Academy store sells them for $356.

About a week after I got it, I was picking up a holster from them and they told me S&W was having some price increases on all products. I think she said 8-13% across the board.

I think some places just like to sell them for right about what S&W calls MSRP, while others like to make a smaller profit, but deal in volume.

I'm in

Picked up my first centerfire J-frame yesterday a 442. Headed to the range later to put her through the paces.

Well here's my story...

I've been carrying j frames for many years, always steel, always with a hammer. The last six years I've been carrying my glock 23. For some reason the heat really got to me this summer and carrying the 23 became a chore.

I starting reading this thread a couple of months ago and my wheels started turning. A few weeks ago I threw in the towel and bought a new 442. After running a few hundred rounds thru it and carrying it daily for the past several weeks, all I can say is I just love this little dude. I really am kicking myself for waiting so long to pick one up.

They really are a fine little general carry gun and I'm happy to be in the club.

Shucks, Nematocyst-870, yer gonna make me blush.

I certainly had no idea this thread would be so popular when I started it, but I'm glad, thankful, pleased, and humbled with the way it has grown. (I'm proud of it, too, at least as much as my modesty allows.)

I'm proud of the converts, also. The more 642/638/637/442/etc. owners, the better. Thank you all.

Revolvers rule!

Humble regards,
fiVe
P.S. If they send a free 642, you can be assured that I will gladly take it (in a humble way of course ;) ).

Parting is such sweet sorrow...

I just passed my 642 on to my daughter and new son-in-law. I miss it already :uhoh:

But, it feels great to help a young couple get started (they also got my 870 and a G19). I was planning that my next handgun would be a G27 to complement the G23, but now that I am without a 642...

The question is: How long does life persist without a 642 in the pocket? Can the universe stay intact without the proper number of 642s in pockets?

Ok, you're right, I owe it to the balance of the universe to quckly acquire a replacement 642! ;)

Oh gosh! If only the Plutonians had had their pockets stuffed with 642s the evil scientists would never have dared dissing them like that.

Now I have to go through the agony of choosing between the 340PD and 642 all over again. Even the black 442 is a tempting distraction. Why can't all guns be 642s and just make life simpller?

Obviously there are boatloads of 642 enthusiasts here. The question is, has any human that has encountered a 642 ever NOT fallen in love with it? I think it is as perfectly designed for its role as the 1911 is for combat.

Cheap 135gr Gold Dot

I just thought I'd pass along some info a friend gave me. There is a large leo supplier in Florida that also sells to the public. I ordered some 135gr gold dots for my new 442. They sell them for 16 dollars plus shipping for a box of fifty. Best price I've seen. Fast shipping and very professional.

I was trying to keep them all to myself! :neener:

First Post

Since we have two 642's, I thought it appropriate my first post was on the 642 forum. One of them has the Crimson Trace Lazer Handgrips, and they are sweet. I prefer the FIST K5 Kydex pocket holster to the Don Humes 001 NO. 3-2" because it is thinner and has a thumb push. The OWB holster is a Fobus SW 357 2.5". Hope the pictures make it with this post...
