The 642 club

I've had a 642 for nearly 10 years, I guess. The finish has several blemishes on it, but I don't really care. It just makes it that much more useful; I don't worry at all about scratching it.

Great little gun; second only to my G27 for a carry gun. One of the two will be with me.

I bought a model 442 about three weeks ago and put a set of Badger rosewood grips on it, and it looks great. I have probably shot about 250 rounds from 7-10 yards and my accuracy with it is not very good. I carry a Glock 26 and also have a Glock 21 both of which I am very accurate with. I have had a couple of other guys from our gun club shoot the little .38, both good shooters and also shot poorly. We all feel the trigger pull is way too heavy, so tomorrow it's off to the gunsmith for a trigger job. Have any of you had a lighter trigger pull installed and did it improve the accuracy? I also need to paint that front site. I definately want to get this gun in working order to pocket carry, I love the concealability.

G2126,

From reading through these posts, a trigger job does have the potential of negatively impacting the reliability of the 642/442. To me, the death-and-taxes reliable nature of the 642/442 is what makes it so attractive. You did not mention if your's was NIB/Like NIB, but that trigger will improve somewhat with a lot of dry firing. Dry firing is VERY important with these little guns to break them in and improve your trigger control, so give that a try before doing the trigger job. BTW, I am as accurate at 7-10 yds distance with my 642 as I am with my XD 9mm. Makes sense, as the .38 special is one of the most accurate handgun cartridges in existence, more so than a 9mm or .40 S&W IMHO. I admit accuracy is a relative term for me. If I work at it, I can produce 6" groups at 7 yds with my 642. Not bad, its decent enough for your average self defense range. But I hope to be shooting those kinds of groups at 15 yds in the near future. The proof of this little gun's capability is that if I really concentrate, I can hit in and around the X-ring at 7 yds, so consistency with trigger control and grip seems to be my biggest hurdle. I am experimenting a lot, so that explains the inconsistency. Plus, when I get tired I get pretty sloppy. (BTW, barrel length has little, if anything to do with the accuracy potential of the gun, its just that a shorter barrel has a shorter sight radius, making aiming difficult).

When I practice trigger contol, I first check to make sure my gun is unloaded about a half a dozen times. I ask my wife to check too;) . Then I go in our bedroom, which is painted dark blue. I aim at the white switch plate and proceed to dry fire. It's pretty easy to see when I'm doing something wrong. Remember that there will always be a little wobble. I've been trying with different grip techniques too. Being right handed, I think what will work best for me is gripping the gun with about 60-70% of the total grasping force coming from my weak left hand. I am finding this helps me relax my right hand and trigger finger for better trigger contol. Anyone else find this to be true?

On another subject, I looked back through the Club and found that most of you prefer the round cut Mika pocket holster to the square one, so I think I'll order one this weekend. Did you just specify that you had a 642/442, or did you give him custom dimensions for your holster?

Also, about the stock screw holding the grips in place. I try to oil mine every few days, but it still corodes in a hurry. I usually remove it once/month to scrub it with a brush and reoil it. Has anyone found a better solution for controlling this problem?

Nice post, jad0110.

Thanks for the reminder to practice dry firing, and to be 6X safe about it.

My mom's carry gun. Sweet to convert someone in to a pro-gunner.

I do the maintaince though cleaning lightining the trigger ect. Got it down to 6lbs and smooth. DAO is a B**** at first.

Im envious, high_cap :( Wish my 642 was hovering @ 6lbs.
Went and picked up my hogue grips today for the 642. My local gun store SUCKS. I just bought 50 .38special non +p FMJ's for 11.99 last week at wal-mart, and 50 more +P JHP's for 12.99 at the same time & place. I go in to buy some range rounds for practice from the local gunstore, and the bastards want 28.99 for a box of 50 .38spec rounds. :fire: I'm going to be totally ****ed when the wal-mart stops carrying handgun ammo. Time to start ordering cases of it online i suppose :/ This is the same store i watched raise the price from 8.99 per box of 50 9mm's to 11.99 per box in a 3 week period. I came in and bought about 6 boxes per week for 3 weeks (the employees took notice) and whaddya know the prices went up 30% just like that. I stopped coming in for 2 months and now they're back down to 9.99.

All it is, is a spring kit from brownells, a file and a good eye.

Yeah I guess it's a little harder then just dropping in springs. Got it lighter at first then increased the tension because it is used for carry/home defense. I really don't want an AD in my house.

I have a spring kit from Brownells that with the help of HighVelocity, will be going in my 642 in the next week or so. I hope it helps the pull a bit.

These really are great guns. I have mine with me ALL the time (where legal of course). I hop this kit lightens it up just a little, but keeps it 100% reliable.

Put another 150 rounds through my 642 this weekend, all +P's. The hogue grips really make this a fun and easy gun to shoot; no pain in my hand like i had after 80 rounds of +P last weekend with the stock grips. I picked up an Uncle Mikes 'sidekick inside pants' 'open top' (no velcro) (http://www.wholesalehunter.net/outdoor_sports/Uncle-Mikes/Uncle-Mikes-8900-1-Concealment.html) holster and am very happy with how it fits...draw out of it is very smooth also. I've been getting used to wearing it around the house (getting my CCW next month) and have got it positioned so it doesn't feel uncomfortable even when sitting in a cramped area.Yay for the 642 :)

Nematocyst-870,

I've always been deathly afraid of an AD/ND. For example, one of the things I don't like about my Springfield XD9 is that as part of the disassembly process, you have to PULL THE TRIGGER :what: (make sure gun is unloaded, remove magazine, make sure gun is unloaded, lock slide back (cocking firing pin in the process), make sure gun is unloaded, flip up disassembly lever, make sure gun is unloaded, unlock slide and let gently slide forward, PULL TRIGGER). Yikes. ADs/NDs have happened this way. There is no harm in being a baby about safe gun handling.

Headless,

I just bought the same IWB holster a few weeks ago. Only paid $12. It took a little while to get used to it, but I hardly notice it anymore. Note that I only carry IWB when the pants/shorts I'm wearing don't have large enough pockets.

Prices for a 642

Hello folks,

I am looking to purchase a 642 here in Maryland. At the local pawn shop, the dealer has two 642's.

One is a brand new one for $349.00

The other is a slightly used, mint condition, 642 with the CT grips. The dealer is giving me my law enforcement discount of $425.00.

Are these good prices and if so, which one should I go for?

Thanks,

Jim

The one with the crimson trace grips is a great deal!! They usually sell for $550 and up. I'd go for it!:)

Here in central Ohio new 642-2s go for 329-339 routinely. The price on the 642 with the CT grips seems like a deal if the gun and grips are same as new. Will he give you a day or two to try 'em with money back if not satisfied?

Snap caps for J-frame

Howdy,

It may just be me but I think Snap-caps "feel" different than empty chambers.
I think it's more like the trigger pull with live rounds. I'm sure it's easier on the gun when the hammer has something to hit besides the frame. I have Crimson Tace grips on my J-frame and when I dry-fire without snap-caps the laser dot seems to jump around more than when I'm using snap-caps. It just seems to run smoother with something in the chambers.

Cheers,

Cincinnati Slim

If you want the laser grips that would be a great
deal if they're in fine condition. If you end up not
liking the grips you could always sell them.

Another member joined up. Ordered a 642 today with Model 405 Crimson Trace Laser Grips. Should be ready for me to pick up tomorrow. My Mika pocket holster arrived yesterday. Looking forward to getting to the range.

Hey Group, not new to the Highroad, but new to this group! I carry a 642 almost daily and have been doing so for years! Great gun and Smith does stand behind it warranty wise (I've tested it three times!). Looking forward to hearing more great news on the 642.
I see many of you carry in the pocket...does the weight not affect you? Don't it pull on the pocket or thump around as you walk (especially in Docker type pants)?

New Owner

Well I finally went to my local dealer and picked up a used 642 with the CT grips. Paid 425.00 plus tax. Gun was only about two months old before it was sold back to my dealer(pawn shop). While I havent shot it yet, I am very pleased with the gun. Now all I need is a concealment holster. Are these Mika holsters anything like the rave reviews they are getting

Jim

you just got an awesome deal man.

after reading enough reviews i wish i had gotten the mika rather than the desantis nemesis, which holds the gun way too high and requires DEEP pockets.

personally i reccomend IWB as well. if you want IWB i can reccomend the real cheap uncle mikes nylon iwb. its tiny and drops the gun nice and low so only the grip is sticking up.

i've put about 400 rounds down range so far, and I have to say this is one fine gun. I picked up a pair of (I think) 60's era stocks for a song ($5) in the junk bin of the local gun shop. What do you think?

(I think they add)
