SmartCarry

Hey, do you find that the cylinder gets hung up on the pocket when you draw out of the SmartCarry?

Finally got around to taking pictures of my beloved 642 ...

I carry in the front pocket in a Galco horsehide pocket holster. I'd like something that doesn't show the cylinder in front -- it's molded on both sides

I've been quite satisfied with my front-pocket holster from Andrew's Leather. Solid construction, with a non-molded side facing out to break up the j-frame's profile.

edit: Andrew's website is a little...busy. The pocket holster is the eight holster listed on the left-side menu, under "concealed".

Bought 642 Today

Well, went down to pick up some cash from a gun shop where I had some of my collection on consignment (consolidating to quality). For me, going to a gun shop is like going to Costco. Hard to just stop in and walk out with a case of cola or some small item. We did our business (read: I received my cash) and I eye balled a new Sig 239 that I really wanted. I put the 239 next to my SIG 220 Equinox which I carry half of the time but, then out of the corner of my eye I saw a new 642 sitting there – not the best looking Smith I’ve ever seen but very cute from a functional point of view. The 239 will need to wait, I wanted something smaller and lighter today. :neener:

I have a model 36 and a model 60 already that I use in a Mika Pocket holster which I love but, the 642 is lighter than those other two so I decided to walk out of that store with a new 642. I'll now go back and put the model 60 on consignment to help defray the cost of the new 642. Oh well.

Naturally, once I got home I took off the SIG 220 and just pocket carried the 642 for the rest of the day. Nice. I also purchase a new SIG coat which has the secret pocket and strap for carry and the 642 disappeared in there. Now I need to clean/lube (even though its new) and get some range time in. I have to drive to Canada this weekend so I need to sterilize my Truck and remove all things firearms to make sure I don’t set off any drama at either border crossing but next week I’ll be at the range with this point shooter..

Awesome, 2Pak - welcome to the club :) How would you compare the feel of the trigger on your Model 36 compared to the 642? The 642 is noticeably lighter, you're right.

Well, I'm in the club! Just ordered a 340pd through bud's gun shop, and it shipped on the 26th! :D Probably have it by next week. It will compliment my ye-olde M38, which I dearly love, which replaced with my OLD M60 .38 which was nice, but I didn't love it so much.

Well okay, I'll be a fringe member, not having a genuine 642, but the 340 is close enough in form and function, right? :D

Ain't No Discrimination Here!

I've been here a while and they haven't kicked me out yet.

Add another new member to this esteemed club - just came back with my new 642.

Thanks for all the great information guys - it's great to have one place like this thread for almost everything an owner (or potential owner) would need. Now if only S&W would start handing out commissions......

I doubt that the '642 Club' would turn away any and all owners of S&W J-frames.;)

Besides, it's not unusual for owners of S&W J-frames to eventually own more than one of them ... and often several ... so you might eventually own a 642, anyway. :neener:

FWIW, I only own 3 S&W J-frames at the moment, and only one of them is a 642.

Here is my 642 that I posted a good while back. I recently replaced the stock Uncle Mike's boot grips w/ service stocks and a Tyler T grip adapter. Feels real good, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it shoots. Also pictured is it's little brother, the 637.

SmartCarry

No. If I didn't do the following, I would.

If you have the cylinder getting hung up on the draw from a SmartCarry, then you need to get a large safety pin (short and quick solution), put the gun in the holster (which you aren't wearing at this time) and position it so that the top of the cylinder is just out of the pocket. Then, pin the bottom of the pocket just below the muzzle, so the gun cannot enter the pocket any more deeply. If you ever carry a gun in your SmartCarry that is longer than the one adjusted for with the pin, then you take out the pin while you carry the longer gun, and replace it when you want to carry the shorter one. If you only use the SmartCarry with a gun that you have to adjust the holster for, then you might consider stitching the bottom of the holster pocket instead of using the safety pin.

Today My youngest daughter wanted to shoot my smallest gun, she is the smallest in the family and likes small things. I loaded up some 158gr with some 3gr of 231 and gave it to her,Wow she said that kicked a lot. She had been shooting most of the rest of my guns today, including a 35-1, 60-4, 13(with 38s) and a 65 also with 38s. She really likes the 642, I changed out the 940 cylinder for her to shoot. She really likes the 35-1 the most.

Another new 642 owner - due to this forum

Good evening,

Add me to the club - mainly due to this forum.

Used to carry a Sig P230, then lugged around a big Beretta Cougar 8040 (not the most concealable weapon ever made...) Never carried it.

Just traded it yesterday for a shiny new 642.

By the way, got it new for $349

Thanks to this forum for the info and recommendations!

Hope you all will forgive me, but I'm just too impatient/excited to get to 1001.

This post intentionally left what would've otherwise been blank had this message not been posted to trip it over to 1001.

A Landmark Post

Our beloved thread has reached a special milestone. Behind this post, you will find 1,000 others that include information about an exceptional handgun. When I started this thread, I never imagined The 642 Club would become so popular. It has become one of God’s blessings to me. We now have a credible, first-hand, first-rate resource about one of the best revolvers on the market. This is a testament to the post-ers who have made valuable contributions here.

According to my not-so-scientific-possibly-prone-to-errors calculation, approximately 116 Smith and Wesson snub-nosed revolvers (mostly 642’s) have been purchased as a direct result of this thread. At a conservative price of $325 each (and the 442’s would be more), that is a total of $37,700 of business for Smith and Wesson. This is probably a small drop in the bucket to them, but I’m still proud (in a modest way, of course) of this figure.

We are the 2nd largest thread on THR and still growing. I don’t know how big we will get, but I expect us to eventually become the largest thread on the board. You can’t deny the popularity, carry-ability, or the practicality of the 642. The more I carry mine, the more I enjoy it. Let me also add here, that The 642 Club welcomes any and all snub nose revolvers--J-frame or not.

Thanks to ALL who have posted and visited here. None of this would’ve happened without you. Few things are more credible than a post with first-hand knowledge. Anyone who researches through this thread can consider themselves very learned of the 642 when they are done.

Everyone stay safe and for goodness sake, keep posting!

Peace,
fiVe

<Bells ring. Fireworks go off. 100's of 642's get polished. Champaign corks pop.>

Yeeeehaaaa!!!!!!

Here's to then next 1000.

Praise the 642 & pass the gravy.

Nem, 642 in pocket...

Congrats fiVe on making what we all consider to be The post on THR! If I didn't live in the middle of a city, I'd go out in my backyard and pop off some Speer GDHPs right now!

And darn, if only my son had been born today :D. He was due yesterday, but the stubborn little turkey is a little too comfortable where he is :neener:. Ah heck, there's still 32 minutes left in the day.

I'd also like to thank everyone else here on the forum for their posts. Though I was thinking of a snub .38 for CCW, it was The 642 Club that convinced me to get my 642. We become better friends each and every day.

I look forward to the next 1000 posts!
