.357's in J frames are a whole different bag of worms.. You can do it pretty well if you stay with a steel frame gun and use some medium velocity magnum rounds.

They have a little more "oomph!" and recoil isn't intimidating.
With full bore rounds, it it more expedient to just use an aluminum baseball bat.

Whack the BG with the bat, and when he is down, hit yourself in the hand a couple of times with the bat, and you will essentially the same results!!

That being said, I have this one in my pocket, loaded with 158 grn. SWC's, most of the time.

You must have been posting while I was typing..
You will like the Mika holster. When your first get it, it will seem bulky, but after a few days it conforms to your gun and to you, and is great.

I use to pocket carry a mdl 36 with CT sights, but the little woman decided she wanted it for carry and the nightstand.
I think she has a good combination.. 38 +P's, CT sights, low muzzle flash and blast. That makes for a good "shoot in the dark" gun.

Darn her anyway! When she swiped my 36 , I had to run right out and get the 640-1 for everyday pocket carry. I will try and muddle through with it.

I wish my little woman would swipe one of my guns - I wouldn't feal guilty when I got another one to replace it :D I carried my 640 in my pocket (mostly back pocket) for a while, but it just felt to heavy (thats the excuse I used to justify gettin my 642 ;) ) I really like the difference in weight between the two. 8 oz doesn't seam like much, but it makes a big difference. I also like the shortter over-all size of the 642. Its easier to hide in my pocket - the butt doesn't poke out. Your analogy of the 640 with full magnum loads and an aluminum baseball bat is excellent!

642 prices

Shattered00

If you have a Sportsmans Warehouse in your area check out their prices on 642's. $349.95 for 642. It beat Academy in my area by $22.00.

Mine is a 442 also. I jus got my t-grip back from being bead blasted to match the hard chrome..too bad tyler doesn't offer this as a standard finish....heck, they offer bronze color...how popular can that be?

Want to talk me out of jettisoning the 9?

In a fit of madness that's accelerated over the last several days,
while considering purging the toolkit of un-needed tools,
I'm thinking of selling/trading my Kahr K9.

(Unlike many THR members, for me, less is more.
I'm seeking the minimal toolkit - 4 or 5 guns -
for an ultimate survival experience.)

I currently own an 870P (the main HD weapon),
a CZ 452 (tack driver it is),
a Kahr K9, and a 642,
and plan to buy a Marlin 336 in .30,
mostly for medium-sized game.

I'm not comfortable with the CZ 452 (tack driver it is,
but I'm just not a bolt guy), and wish to trade it for a
Browning Buckmark Rifle in .22 LR.

That trade won't be quite enough to get said rifle
AND a decent scope for it, like a Microdot.

Thus, in this fit of gun lust, I'm considering trading the K9
with the CZ so that I can outfit the Buckmark Rifle with a decent scope.
(That aforementioned Microdot, or something like it.)

Over the last few months, I've found that, for SD/HD,
I carry the 642 FAR more than the K9.
(Mr. 870P is always just steps away.)

The K9 is just too heavy to wear in an OWB with comfort.
So, I'm thinking I'll trade it for the Buckmark,
(along with that CZ) in order to get the scope.

That would leave me with the 642 for handgun SD, the 870P,
a 336 for medium game, and Buckmark in .22 LR for small game.

Now, I realize that the K9 has a longer reach (trajectory) than the 642.
But I also think that a handgun is mostly for UCP (up close and personal),
not for longer fire fights. (Those can be handled by the 870P or the 336.)

Yes, it's conceivable that eventually,
as I move up into big mountain country,
I may purchase a revolver in .357 or .44.

But for now, the 642 feels like enough for the urban environment I'm in.

So, here's my question: Why shouldn't I sell/trade the K9?

Can anyone talk me out of this madness?

Has anyone ordered a Mika IWB or OWB for their snubbie? If so, how does it work? Also does anyone have both square cut and round cut pocket holster and if so do you have a preference. I have a square cut only right now and it is all I use.

308win

I have the round version of the Mika holster.. He asked me what kind of pants I wore and I told him Levi's (blue jeans) He recommended the round cut.. I have been pleased with the holster and the way it holds my gun in place.

Another way to look at it.. the round will work in a square pocket, but a square won't work well in a round pocket........

All these pages and no one has commented that the "Ultimate Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything", as told to us by Doug Adams, is 42?

I can't believe I never made that connection.........:banghead:

Good catch!

308...I had both his pocket holster and the IWB....the pocket holster is great for loose fitting pants (perfect for unifrom as a back-up) but a bit too thick for jeans carry....the IWB rode a bit too high for my taste and the material that makes it a nice pocket holster didn't seem to work for me since the gun slides out real esy....so I sold them it....

Blindref..they are real sambar stag.....I got them off ebay from Spresser knife works....I lucked out with a starting price of 90 bucks and no other bidders...he recently sold a pair that didn't look half as nice as these for 120. as you can see, both sides are fairly good match....many of these look like two different sets of grips...what I like about them is, like the original wood, they don't cover the backstrap but they are thicker....so they are still very compact but not so thin as you feel like you're holding a stick...here are som pics to show the other side and how thick they are....I haven't tried them with speedloaders since I use speed strips, but it looks like they might be a bit to thick for them....stag is also a nice compromise between rubber and smooth wood since clothes slide over them but the scarring makes for a firm grip...

I'll be sure to post a review once I get it.

Nematocyst,

Not sure which K9 you have but I have heard that the K9 is the best of the Kahr line. And if you have one that is 100% reliable I can't imagine getting rid of it. Yes, it might be a little heavier, but it seems like it would be a real sweet Nine. I've never owned a Kahr since they are a little out of my price range at the time.

Speaking of extra weight in a CCW, I also have a couple of S&W 60's that I carry some days [only one at a time, LOL] in a Simply Rugged Sourdough Panckake Holster [the same holster I use for my 442]. Now the 60 is 22.5 ounces versus the 442 at 15 ounces. That makes it 50% heavier. Can I tell a difference? Sure I can, but with a good pancake holster and a good quality gun belt it snugs us real nice and close to the body and carry is still comfortable. What do I gain with 50% weight increase? The more potent 357 Mag in a manageable Stainless Steel snubbie.

Now I never pocket carry the 60, as it is definitely a belt gun for me. Therefore, I carry my 442 more often just because I pocket carry it most of the time. If I am going to belt carry [OWB] it is going to be with the more potent model 60.

My daily dress is more suited to pocket carry, thus the 442. However, when my dress style is suited, I prefer to carry the 60. They both have their place and I wonder the same thing about your K9. I'm sure your 642 serves you very well, but I wonder if you wouldn't really miss your K9 at those times when you feel like carrying a little more capacity and are dressed for carrying it.

I like to have several carry pieces and well as several modes of carry, i.e., pocket, OWB, IWB, ankle, etc. An additional reason I like having both the 442and the 60 for CCW is that they both fit the same holsters...simply an economy advantage for me. You might even want to consider such a combination if you want a little more fire power with the ability to use the same holsters. Many factors play into what one carries that particular day. Excuse the rambling....Just my 2 cents worth. YMMV! :uhoh:

PottyDoctor,

I'm wondering, would that same IWB holster work for a Ruger SP101? One day, I was thinking of getting a 2 1/4" SP for the 357 Mag option in a steel gun to carry in the winter when I don't pocket carry as much.

^ I keep on wanting to refresh the page to watch it hit 100,00....kind of like a car odometer to see if it flips!!

To add some content here, I put the Hogue monogrips on mine, and while I haven't shot it think these are gonna be too big for the gun (and pretty sure I mentioned this a bunch of posts back).

Looks like the Hogue Bantam style is the one I should of picked up. Though not sure if I want to go rubber or wood.

jad110,

I previously owned a SP-101 and it was too large to fit the J-Frame holster. I have considered getting another SP-101 and having it customized, but it would require another set of holsters and I'm not sure I want to add more holsters to my already 'multiplying' holster drawer. I don't know about you, but it seems my holster collection is outgrowing my gun collection. Seriously, it does take several holsters and styles to have what one needs for different seasons and types of dress. That's why I've stuck with J-Frames...you can have several different guns using the same holsters which equals somewhat less of an investment if one is on a budget.

D-Man,

I have the Hogue Monogrips on a S&W 60 and they are excellent for reducing recoil and better control. You get a full grip with them and I can carry them concealed just fine even though they're a little larger than a boot grip. My gripe with the Monogrips is that they 'stick' or 'cling' to my cover garment too much. I carry OWB with this gun.

I also have the Hogue Bantams. I have tried these on my S&W 442. They are too small for me and they also have the 'sticking' and/or 'clinging' problem.

My solution so far has been to use a set of Eagle Secret Service wood grips on my 442. The model 60 currently is wearing a set of Michaels Boot Grips which are a very concealable size and don't stick nearly as bad as the Hogues. One other option I've considered is to try the Pachmayr Compacs which, I believe, are made of a nylon which gives a good grip but is not nearly as 'sticky'. Maybe someone with a set of Pachmayrs can chime in and give us a report of how they work for CCW in both pocket carry and OWB/IWB.
