I do not see the need to remove the plate cover...I just shot a little FP-10 into the action...now she's snickity-click smoooooothe with a little dry firing.

First let me say that, although I've only been a member of the Club a short time, I'm impressed with the knowledge and camaraderie of this group.

TEL, we are glad you are here, and I appreciate the contributions you have made to the Club.

This is a good place because of all the good people.

Galco CON-158B

I had this in the wrong forum. It's better here :)

My holster finally came in (was backordered).
It's a Galco CON-158B for my 642-2 with Crimson LG-405 Laser Grips.

It's fits like a glove (pre-formed and the barrel extends to a perfect 1/4" from the bottom). It also wears very close to your waist. I use this same holster for all my carry guns. Very concealable. Worth every penny.

GregAllCalibers: Nice pic--looks like a great OWB rig (well, I assume it is OWB). Can you post a pic on your person so we can see first-hand how it wears?

Galco Holster

Here are the pictures you asked for.

I use this same model holster for my .380, .45, and my new .38 642-2, shown here. The fit is perfect. Snug against your waist. Has a FBI cant for very fast draw. Holds weapon even while running. Minimal printing under a shirt.

I have strips and speed-loaders, but frankly speaking a small pouch of 10 rds in my pocket works fine.

Statistics indicate you will almost never get through more than a couple of rds in a defensive situation.

For those who are interested, I've had very good service out of a Safariland Comp-1 speedloader. Revolver in the right pocket in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster and the speedloader in the left pocket with my other stuff. Very comfortable in shorts in the summer.

ARTiger: do you have a chrono? That would be an excellent addition
Lop: Nope . . . wish I did. I may can get access to one at a local indoor range, but that would mean a seperate testing session just for velocity and would not be data from the same bullets shot into the wetpack. Worth doing though and I'll pursue it.

Most of themanufacturers velocity numbers are be a bit off as all were probably done with a 4" bbl. The only exception is the 135GDHP for which Speer has #'s on their website from a 1 7/8" bbl. Brassfetcher and some other sites do have chrono numbers from 1 7/8 and 2" bbls for some of these loads.

Just finished ordering Corbon 110's (interesting round - it's bullet designed for the 9mm). I think I'll replace their 125 with the 110 as there's a good cross section of 125's already with the other loads.

I need to emphasize here that I am no scientist - just a guy who like seeing for himself just exactly what the firearm he's using for defense is capable of. I planned on doing this "testing" for my own peace of mind, but do not mind at all sharing the information I get with you folks as I have learned much here and enjoy reading your posts.

Regards,
ART

Again, let me express my thanks to you for doing this. You are doing us all a BIG favor, and we certainly do appreciate it. Please compile/post the results at your convenience.

MUCH thanks,

Yep, me, too. That's why I'm funding testing of certain rounds in gelatin by JE223!

Hey, Greg.

Nice to have another member who carries a 642 (normally pocket carried) in an OWB.

Welcome.

Nem (who got buried in work again this week ... when will this barrage stop...?)

Smith and Wesson Holding Company (SWHC)

J frames drive the market...well not really... but the current events including the democratic strength, war in Iraq and Virginia Tech are fueling fears of renewed gun control.

The renewal of the M&P line has been succesful in both hand and long guns.

SWHC is considered a strong buy by the analysts.

Ruger is still kicking butt too.

a heavier bullet would slow down and drop faster than a light bullet, given the same amount of initial propulsion.

TEL,

Sure that isn't the other way around? Maybe I'm just confroosed  .

I removed the side plate and lubed the moving parts. Well that helped!!! Bone dry inside. The DAO feels a lot smoother, which should help the pattern.

I cleaned mine out and relubed it not long ago myself. It did make the pull feel much smoother and a touch lighter. Too bad I don't shoot it any better, it just feels better.

lop,

Do you know if he is going to be testing the new standard pressure 158 grain LSWCHP from Buffalo Bore? That round seems very promising. I generally prefer a heavier bullet in 38 special (though the 110 DPX +P by Cor-Bon beckons me), but carry the middle weight 135 +P Speer GDHPs because of low muzzle flash in dark conditions. If Buffalo Bore's information is correct about there being very little flash, that load could be a top-notch SD choice for a short barrel snubbie.

It would be interesting to see how the standard Buffalo Bore 158 compares to the +P 158 Grain FBI Load.

Current poll numbers

Top three:

135 gr. Speer Gold Dot +P: 32.00%
158 gr. LSWCHP FBI +P: 19.11%
Other: 14.67%

No other rnd in double digits.

Why Nem! I was working on this very thing. Thank you so much!! Now I can have my life back. (Two minutes??!! You better believe I want to know how you did that!! I was going to volunteer to maintain it henceforth, but your efficiency in this matter is beyond words.) I must now change your name from Sir Nem to Nem the Great.

Humbled, but very happy,
fiVe

P.S. Just returned from The 336 Club thread and saw your explanation on how you compiled the member list so quickly. Very clever, Nem. How did you discover that? It is always best to let the computer do the work! Thanks, again.

All - I have been reviewing ordnance gelatin tests from several different sites and compiled the following by averaging the results. There will be some margin of error due to varying gelatin block calibration between sites but it is probably close enough for our purposes. I am attempting to locate data for the rounds that ARTiger will be testing in order to give us as complete a database as possible. All rounds fired from .38 spl revolver w/1 7/8" barrel. This is what I have so far:

----------Round-------------penetration-------Expansion
135 gr. Speer Gold Dot +P: -----9.725"------------0.555"
158 gr. LSWCHP FBI +P: --------11.9"------------ 0.593"
110 gr. Cor-Bon DPX +P:--------13.125"---------- 0.490"
125 gr. Buf Bore Speer GD +P: --12.9"-------------0.543"
158 gr. Buf Bore SWCHP +P: ----13.0"------------ 0.577"

I wish Cor-Bon had a 158 gr. DPX!!!
I am looking forward to seeing how the gelatin tests correlate to the wet newspaper tests. I will post more results as I find them.

Nem the Great
- Am I worthy enough to learn the secret of The List?

lop,

Do you know if he is going to be testing the new standard pressure 158 grain LSWCHP from Buffalo Bore?

John will test whatever you pay for. Have at it :D

jt1: make sure the numbers you use for averaging are calibrated gelatin numbers. There are some numbers floating around on the internet taken from uncalibrated gelatin. Look for the BB, and the calibrated/uncalibrated penetration figure.

jad0110 - The best analogy I can think of at the moment is to try this experiment. Throw a softball as hard as you can and measure the distance it goes. Now throw a shot put of similar size as hard as you can. My bet is that it went a much shorter distance. Given the SAME amount of thrust (or propulsion), a lighter object will go further than a heavier object.

jt1 - Good info. I wanted to try an experiment, so I collected velocity and energy information for the same rounds for which you had obtained information. That data follows along with the part number (I want to make sure we're comparing exactly the same rounds) and the web site where I got the info.

Velocity Energy
Round Part # (FPS) (FTLBS)
Cor-Bon DPX +P DPX38110/20 1050 269 http://www.dakotaammo.net/products/corbon/dpx.htm
Buf Bore SWCHP +P 20A/20 1000 351 http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm#38spl
Buf Bore Speer GD +P 20B/20 1050 306 http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm#38spl
LSWCHP FBI +P X38SPD 782 215 http://www.thegunzone.com/speer135jhp38sp.html
Speer Gold Dot +P 4014 866 225 http://www.thegunzone.com/speer135jhp38sp.html

Combining my data with yours, I used Excel to do a multiple regression analysis to see if I could derive a formula that would predict the amount of penetration given all the other information. Note that your expansion data is important since my assumption would be that the more a shell fragments or expands, the less it's penetration would be.

The formula I came up with is as follows:

Predicted Penetration = -0.2166739 x Energy + 0.140458 x Velocity + 3.257239 x Expansion + 0.507953 x Weight - 133.541

Using this data and the information for the Buf Bore Speer GD +P, the predicted penetration would be calculated as follows:

Predicted Penetration = -0.2166739 x 306 + 0.140458 x 1050 + 3.257239 x 0.543 + 0.507953 x 125 - 133.541

Predicted Penetration = 12.90049238 inches

I did this calculation for all the rounds and the formula was able to predict the actual penetration in all cases.

Actual Predicted
Round Penetration Penetration
Cor-Bon DPX +P 13.125 13.125
Buf Bore SWCHP +P 13.000 13.000
Buf Bore Speer GD +P 12.900 12.900
LSWCHP FBI +P 11.900 11.900
Speer Gold Dot +P 9.725 9.725

This tells me that weight, expansion/fragibility, velocity and energy when combined are very good predictors of the penetration that would be expected from a round -- as I would expect.

Any thoughts?

Hate to jump in with another question. But, can any one recommend a good gunsmith to do an(double) action job on my 642.
