As far as new and improved goes I am really looking forward to getting my order of buffbore 158 gr. standard pressure and +p and seeing how they do.

If I win the $100 million, the ammo's on me! Have a nice day.

I ordered a couple boxes of BB 158 SP soft. It arrived yesterday.

When you win-

Make mine a case of Tim's Sundles' finest BBB 158. A fine bouqet with a slight tinge of no flash.

Interesting Website

The Box O' Truth - What you always wanted to know... But were unable to test yourself!

http://www.theboxotruth.com/

The purpose of the Box O' Truth is to test the penetration of various rounds.

There is only one way to know how much a certain round penetrates.

You must shoot it into a medium and see for a fact.

Very interesting. Think a car offers much protection? :what:
Check out The Buick of Truth. See how the Buick stands up to 9mm. Who says you need a gun that starts with the number 4.

Thanks to Tim Schmidt and The U.S. Concealed Carry - Weekly Newsletter

That is an interesting site, I have perused it before. It seems a car does indeed offer some cover; but only for the first shot or so!

Ranger7: I personally try to practice as much as possible with what I carry. Yes, its more expensive that way. But since I'm not a reloader, I don't have access to similar-performing and feeling range ammo; you might, and that's ok, too.

This is why I recently bought 1000 rounds of GDHP +P 135gr 38spl. I used Mark's supplier (a good guy!) and I paid about .25 a round, IIRC.

What lolpop said - I bought the 1k of GDHP 135's specifically to be able to afford to train with the round I carry. Paying a buck a round for some of these defensive loads is ludicrous IMHO. I have been shooting no less than 10-rounds, up to 100-rounds at least twice a week, (sometimes more). At times, I'll just pop into the range, (indoor pistol) on my way home, empty a couple of speedloaders and head home. Other times, I'm good for a box or two. Either way, I know the round that I train with is the round I carry and I feel better about it all te way around...

Just saw this thread and thought I'd add my name to the list. I bought my 642 about seven or eight years ago and wouldn't be without it. It's the perfect "always" or backup gun. Love it, Love it, Love it.

Mine went for a ride on the pavement while I was tussling with a psycho in the course of my LEO duties shortly after I got it...came right out of the Renegade model 50 ankle holster while fighting on the ground and the cylinder was scuffed up pretty bad with a case of "road rash." Luckily my gunsmith got it buffed out and it is almost invisible now.

(That incident taught me a couple of lessons...despite what I had read in gun magazines, the Renegade model 50 ankle rig COULD use a thumb break- they tried to tell me that at Renegade, they suggested the model 55. I've since added one to mine. And...you really don't want a nice citizen walking up to you after subduing a psycho and asking, "Umm, Officer are you okay, and whose gun is that on the ground there??)

I thought it was funny that when I saw this thread, my 642 was riding in my pocket. Uncle Mike's cheapie pocket holster and it works great. I had a nice Thad Rybka for a PPK and I must admit the Uncle Mike's works better with my 642 than anything I've tried.

My 642 is one of those "buried with me" guns...wouldn't trade it for anything. I used to use the FBI load, but lately have been using Winchester 125 grain +Ps with less recoil and am pleased. Great gun, the 642.

I didn't scroll through all the old pages of this thread, but I don't THINK I have contributed to the "club" total before...

Clyde from Carolina - Welcome to the club. That is a great line, you might just fit in real good here. Thanks for relating your real life epsoide about the ankle holster, glad that turned out ok. This is the kind of post that we all can learn from. Glad your here, looking forward to hearing more from you. (BTW this is your first post.)

Clyde from Carolina

Welcome to the Club. Real life experience are always welcome. That's the only way we learn without going to the school of hard knocks.

Yes, welcome Clyde!

I'm just waiting for my papers to come in, and then (hopefully soon!) I too can be a member of this club! :)

Thanks for the hearty welcome, guys. I wasn't sure if I had posted here before or not. There are a couple of very cool forums that I've joined and posted a few times on, but didn't get around to visiting too often. This seems like a nice place and I guess I'll stick around a while.:)

As for the ankle rig episode, boy that was scary. My heart just about stopped when I realized we had been scuffling right beside a loose gun. If a good guy learns from my mistake and uses a good and secure ankle rig with some kind of retention, it's worth it for me to relate an embarrassing anecdote.

Amazing what hindsight and experience can do for your perspective. I remember ordering that Renegade rig and the guy on the phone trying to talk me into the model 55 with a retention strap. Nope, I had read in a few gun magazines that veteran cops had worn the old model 50 for years with no problems...

newman32, I hope you like your 642 when you get it. I don't think you can go wrong with one.

Thanks again guys, for the warm welcome.

newman32 - Welcome to you. Did you decide on the 442 or 642? I assume you have resolved your left hand issues. We are awaiting your pics and have your membership ready.

This seems like a nice place and I guess I'll stick around a while.:)
Clyde from Carolina - This is a good place to be, we have a great family here and new folks only make it better. If you have any more real life wisdom to share we would be happy to hear it.

Been using my new Mika round bottom pocket holster for a while now and love it.My 642 doesn't fall on the floor of the restroom like it did with my IWB.There is an ease in draw that is herd to explain, much better than I was expecting. The holster has no tendency to follow. There isn't any print through when carried in jeans pockets. Just noticing a slight sweaty feel in hot weather due to the fabric used in the holster, but that is also keeping the gun dry.Robert Mika has a great design and has kept the price real.Heck, he even signs the inside of the holster for each buyer. Highly recommended!!!!!

I just ordered another round cut today and got this in my order confirmation. Most appropriate on this holiday weekend. Great guy, great product, great price. What more could you ask for.

jt1 - I'll make do with the lefty issues (no choice, right?), all the folks here have me confident its a non-issue!

I have not decided yet. I was leaning toward the 442 because I like the subdued look, but it seems most like the 642 because its a little easier to clean??? The 642 looks good too.

Don't know yet. Maybe I'll just get whatever happens to be on the shelf when its time to buy!

When I get it, I'll post some pics so I can be official! Thanks for the help.

Check this thread from the S&W forum regarding Mika holsters. There is a guy in some baggy shorts supposedly carrying."

That's me. :D

I can assure you a 642 in a Mika pocket holster is there. Absolutely the easiest carry combo I've ever found. Add a Bianchi Speed Strip for reload and you've got a great CC 24/7 kit.

p.s. How do I quote a previous message in my reply?

newman32 - I believe the finish on the 642 may be a little more durable than the 442. Having said that you don't want to get too aggressive cleaning it as the clear anodizing is subject to wear and doesn't like harsh chemicals. I use breakfree. I normally prefer darker finishes myself but there is just something about the 642 that won me over. My next one will be a 642 as well.

Photoman - If you log on and click on the VBcode link at the bottom of the page you will find all of the tools available to manipulate text and photos on this site. Scroll down to Quote and see the examples. Basically you copy and paste to the message field, highlite the selected quote and use the quote icon on the message field toolbar (fourth from the left) and your done.

Long Outage

I have been Jonesin to get back in the Clubhouse.

Made it to TN. Mostly working. Pesky customers anyway. ;)

Hope the board stays up for awhile.

I figured you had the 642 in the baggies, it is probably difficult for someone not familar with the setup to perhaps believe.

DA, I hear you re the Jonses. Holiday weekend that I did not have off (since I took my "vacation" last week), so I was stuck in the studio all weekend with no THR. Arrrrggggggg!!!!!!:eek::eek:

Glad we're back up. Another DoS attack. Details of the most recent attack here. (Other threads in technical support chronicle the previous attacks over the last few months.)

Want to help solve that problem? Please make a donation to THR to help our webmaster, Derek Zeenah, solve the problem.

PS: DA, sorry I haven't responded yet to your PM's. I knew they were there all weekend, but couldn't get to THR to respond.

Haven't visited in a while and just noticed the thread. I bought a 642 last fall along with an ankle holster from Galco--I absolutely love them both. If I had to go back and choose again, I would still choose the 642.
It is a great carry gun, small and light but still powerful enough.

I have been planning my strategy for the steel plate challenge at the range for some time. Years ago, I tried my 4" 625 .45 ACP revolver. With five normal plates, I could only miss once. With a 'shoot-off', you add a tie-breaker plate - six plates - I couldn't miss at all - what competition, I was up against 15-21 shooter race-gun bottom-feeders. I needed a 686+.

With a new 7-shot 5" 686+ 'Stocking Dealer Exclusive', I was ready. Sadly, interest had waned in the competition, so I never got to try the 7-shooter. Last year, a trade materialized and I got a LNIB JM PC627 V-Comp... an 8-shooter! We started competing two months ago - I was using wimpy 125gr loads and the comp - no recoil. Sadly, I had trouble picking up the black on black sights - my 625 & 686 having searchlight HiViz front sights. No such front sight thus far for the oddball 627. I elected to practice with the 686+ today - fun - until I ran out of my poppers. I then thought, hey, the 642 and some of it's wimpy 125gr JHP's are 'in the bag' (You knew I'd eventually get to the 642...). I wasted a few rounds finding the appropriate sight picture for those mediocre rounds.

Well, I was needing all of those 7 rounds all too many times when shooting at the four 5-plate sets. Now, shooting that little 642, suddenly I am radar guided. I started laughing... I couln't miss! I started shooting in reverse order - no misses! Five for five! How absurd is that? The little pocket protector, aka 'Doomsday Device', has an ancillary function. No, I won't take a chance at the next competition... I'll use the 686+ - and probably some of those wimpy 125gr JHP poppers I made for the 642... probably nearly 400 left (Hey, they were the cheapest 125gr bullets I could find at the last gun show... reloading is getting more expensive these days.).

hello 642 Club! i am on the verge of joining, but have a couple of questions before i make my purchase.

i'll probably get the 642 with the CT grips, but looking at the CT website it seems they have a new grip model for the 642 (Model 105 here http://www.crimsontrace.com/default.asp?id=780). it looks to be cheaper to buy the 642 with the CT grips rather than purchase them separately, but are those CT grips bulkier/make the gun harder to front pocket carry?

what necessary accessories should i purchase almost immediately, besides a good holster?

i'm sure i have more questions, but that's it for now. thanks in advance, and looking forward to joining soon!

roguejestyr,

Welcome to THR and the 642 Club. I have the 405's and love them. I will also put them on my 442.

Oh...I realize that one is not supposed to carry inside a National Park.

I saw an interesting discussion on this the other day. One poster mentioned that you can carry in a National Forest, just not a National Park. Is that correct?

In the past, I used to do some hiking in the mountains of western NC with my family. I just don't have the time to go anymore, maybe one day. When that day comes, I would like to open carry my 686.

DAdams,

Do you ever make your way over to Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain, or Banner Elk NC? Jefferson City TN is visible from the peak of Beech. My parents and grandparents built a house about halfway up the slope of Beech. It has a spectacular 180 degree view of Banner Elk and Grandfather Mountain.

This photo was taken from the front porch:

Glockman19,

That's a nice 686 you've got there. Sometime I'll post a pic of my 686. It is on it's 3rd set of stocks:

1. Hogue monogrips - finger grooves just don't work for me
2. Pachmayr Compacs - Nice, but just sorta blah looking
3. Ahrends Goncalo Alves round-to-square stocks that I ordered unfinished, then stained myself in Golden Pecan. Sometime when the light is just right outside I'll snap some photos and post.
