Jad and JT, thanks for the congrats on completing the class.

JT, no, haven't filed the app yet for the CCW, but hope to early next week.

By the way, even though I celebrated early over in the 336 Club house,
I think I'll one here too, since this is one of my main rooms on THR:

This is my 5001th post on THR!

<Music plays ... fireworks go off ...
scantily clad dancing girls surround me and start to ...>

<Snaps back to reality ...>

OK, everyone help yourself to a drink of your choice from the club fridge, on me.
The caterer will be here shortly with the hot wings, ravioli and caviar.
We'll break out champaign later.

Right now, me and the dancing girls are going into another room ...

Nem!

Nem!
Good Grief three posts and and number three its.....

A guy can't get a break around here. I'll keep her busy Nem while you bust a move.

Congrats on 5000+ Mr. Wheels, pumps and levers.

Snow was still on the ground when this evil post twisted my arm until I purchased a 442. This far down the line I still have no regrets. I'm even thinking of a pair of lasergrips (205 hard plastic style). Happy shooting all

Thanks, folks.
5000 was a landmark for me.
Been looking forward to that one for a while.

I think THR is the greatest web site on the Internet.
So good to be here. Have learned so much.

JT, I have two personal friends that are "dancing girls".
Very intelligent, thoughtful, wonderful people,
doing what they want to do ... for now ...
No disrespect involved.

DA, believe it or not,
gonna be strictly levers and wheels soon.
(Long story there, told elsewhere ...)

Gunwife, when you get to 5000 posts,
I'll buy you a night with dancing boys
if you want it. :)
Please post more!
We want to hear from you.
THR needs more women participants
whether they dance or not! ;)

Still looking forward to meeting all of you someday ...

I recently purchased a 642, and am now waiting for that bad boy to arrive in the mail. I have always liked guns, but never been “gun crazy”. However, after reading (for days) the enthusiastic reports of countless THR subscribers, I have to say I am a tad excited and starting to act a little “gun crazy”. In fact, it wasn't until I stumbled on this thread that I arrived at the momentous decision to obtain this highly touted metallic wonder. I plan to carry my new friend as a backup. So I am looking for some light (weight), durable, smooth, S&W service style grips (black or dark in color). Oh, and I forgot to mention cheap. I would like to marry any recommendations up w/a Tyler T-grip. DawgFvr's posted pictures on page 148 were pretty close to what I was looking for. Just smooth over and darken the grips. If the collective would continue to impart your wisdom on me, I would be greatly appreciative.

Okay, I'm new to both S&W J-frames and to THR. I have owned a model 637-2 for a few weeks now and could not stop lusting over the 642. So, long story short, I just ordered the 642 and will be picking her up tomorrow.

Now I'm looking for a pair of decent wood stocks, I prefer rose wood. Any ideas as to the best place to find these stocks? I would like to put a pair on both the 637 and the 642. These J-frames are quite addicting little creatures, especially when concealed in a DeSantis Nemesis holster. I can carry on all day and sometimes forget that I'm carrying.

I'm a die-hard Glocker but these J-frames are replacing both my G26 and my G27 as my primary CCW. A little OT, but has anybody shot the M&P line of duty pistols (not the revolvers?) I also picked up an M&P9 and must say, S&W under their new ownership has really came back in a fury.

I'm addicted to these metal (semi-metal) j-frames, that is for sure and this is undoubtedly the longest Internet thread I've ever seen.

when dry firing to smoothen out the trigger, should i do it as fast as I can or just pull trigger slowly until lockup of cylinder, wait 1/2 second and then pull it back a little more so it fires?

yongxingfreesty: I'm no expert on dry-firing so I don't know if it matters. I did tons of dryfiring on mine at a moderate--not fast, but not slow--pace. In my mind, maintaining tension on the trigger slowly until "trigger break" would not be as effective, but as I said, I'm not an expert on the subject.

I'm sure there is a dry-fire master who will come along shortly with an answer.

Check out Lightning Arms Sports for Spegel grips
or try Ahrends

Both make very nice wood grips for J-frames

Looking to join...

After reading upteen pages of posts, I'm looking to join either the 642, 442 or 340 club! Or the semi-auto club, but who knows?

I recently got my CCW permit and am looking for a pistol. I either plan on getting a lightweight gun that I can carry and conceal easily, but is no "target shooter" or get a larger pistol that I won't carry, but just keep in the car for long in-state trips in rural areas. I have a 12-gauge semiauto and several rifles at home for self-defense there.

I really like the looks and potential .357 option of the 340 (and don't have to repeat the postings of shooting it with heavy loads). I don't like the stories of blown-up 340's or the problems of maintaining a titanium cylinder. I like the CT-405 grips and the BIG-DOT front sight options. Locally a 340 CT goes for around $850. Really, the only thing missing on the 340 is adjustable F/R sights, though I see I can have a quality "U" sight installed for $300 (!).

On the other hand, I like the 642/442's cheaper cost (around $424 locally) and non-titanium cylinder. However, it I wanted to upgrade to a CT-405 grip ($250), or a big-dot front sight ($125 plus installation), I am already over the cost of a factory 340CT.

Also, I would consider getting a magna-port done on either J-Frame if I got one. Magnaport says it "significantly" reduces the felt recoil on the 340.

So, for a grand I could get a fully loaded, ported 340.

So the really question is, if you had a $1000 to spend on your one-and-only handgun, would it be a full-on 340?

If not, what would you suggest. I don't have a problem with either a revolver or a semi-auto. I have fired a Glock 45 and like it, BUT do not like the idea of having NO external safety or having to pull the trigger to breakdown the gun. I also can't seem to find any small semiauto that has an actual trigger safety.

Page 150. :what:

Welcome new members.

MrBig, what many of us here will say is that we don't want to shoot .357 Mag out of an airweight.

There's at least one member here <cough> DA <cough> that calls us whimps because of it,
but we're waiting to hear stories about his wrist injuries caused by firing full house rnds in his 340. :D

(Kidding, DA. Hope that never happens, and I doubt it ever will.)

Nem, who thinks .38 spl +P is "good enough" in an air weight and shoots .357 Mag in a K-frame

MrBig - Welcome to you! I must agree with Nem, a .38+P 158gr. heavy load is more that enough to inform a BG of your displeasure with his actions.

Mag-na-port + short barrels = a really, really big muzzle blast, even with flash supressed powders it seems to magnify the effect and spreades it out larger and for a bit longer. While it does "modify" recoil significantly (maybe 30% or a bit more by my feel) I would recommend you try to find an example to test before you commit to this. The recoil from a .38+P out of any j-frame is really quite manageable once you get used to it.

Laser grips are a great thing. And While I would highly recommend them, I no longer use them myself. I have gone the full 360 degrees with them and now I am back to point shooting for SD. Having said that I will add, if you have the money get a set. The 405's carry a bit better, the 305's shoot a lot better.

I like all of the Sc and Ti stuff and I really like the looks of the M&P's, but I always end up happy with the X42 when it comes right down to it. They carry well, point shoot well, and are basic, rugged, and relieable. So if I had $1000.00 to spend on a CCW I would buy two X42's, a TDI and a nice SOG and carry them all (%&@# Happens). Always prepared.

I used to think I wanted to port my J because I'm a "bells & whistles" kind of guy. I have since decided against this on any self defense gun. My reason for this is that there is a good chance that I will be shooting the gun in a close to the body firing stance. I don't like the idea of unburnt powder and flash being blown upwards towards my eyes. For range use, with the gun out in front and eye protection on, a ported gun makes sense to me. Of course all this is just my opinion.

Holster Option

Are there any 642 Club members out there who use the Smartcarry holster on a regular basis? I use it quite often and am curious about other users experiences with it.

This is an excellent observation and a valid point. You will have enough problems in an SD situation without inducing more. Great post.
