The 642 club

DAdams,

Thanks for the write up/comparison. I heard about the issues w/ the PM9 and they drove me to the 642. I learned the hard way, after buying my Taurus PT145, that when a bunch of people are having issues w/ a gun, it should be a no-go until the problems are resovled. Now my Taurus is in the shop getting repaired.

A pair of CT grips would round out my 642, but my Sheriff doesn't allow Lasers for CCWs or his deputies weapons. .

I really, really like my PM40 - but am also very glad to add a 642 to the line-up as I love SW revolvers in general. My PM40 rides in a FIST Kydex pocket holster, is shorter, sits lower, and draws easily and quickly. I don't have enough experience drawing the 642 yet, so I can't draw any firm conclusions yet. Also, at this time I have the longer 305 CTs on it which hampers pocket use a little.

The sights on the PM40 are excellent and the trigger pull is superb, both significantly better that the 642. But my 642 has CT grips on it, making sight quality a little less important.

Of no small importance is the power differential between the .40 and the .38. I can't simply dismiss that difference. My PM40 is 100% reliable.

I am glad I have both guns. Both will receive plenty of use.

Interesting new thread in general handgun discussions entitled,
"Why would anyone buy a revolver?"

I haven't read it thoroughly yet
-close to bed time for me -
but seems civil, informative and interesting.

Thought 642 clubbers might find it interesting, too,
especially there's several in here
that own both revolvers and semis.

Duluth Trading Compant/Other items of interest

Thanks to those who commented on my previous post regarding Duluth Trading Co. I had an unplanned trip and was off the air for a while.

Nematocyst & jt1: Regarding the 12 inch deep pockets, better too long than too short. When looking for pants for pocket carry I often find the pockets too shallow and/or made from thin material. My thinking was with the Duluth pants was that you could cut the pocket for your specific needs then have the old ball and chain sew them up with a heavy duty thread, or leave them the way they are and carry a K frame 6 inch hogleg!! Looks like I'll have to buy a pair for test/evaluation, assuming the ball and chain cooperates.

jt1: There is another source for the plastic training rounds at www.precisiongunspecialities.com, they also carry a unique set of grips called "Hideout Grips" which are not as sticky as rubber and not as slick as checkered wood, worthy of a look.

Also, for those of you who have removable front sights on your J frame, www.xssights.com makes "big dot" and "standard dot" tritium sights that are worth a look, not precision sights but good enough for serious work.

Sorry if this is repetition but I have not yet read all of this giganto thread. Keep up the good work!!!

Light Primer Strikes

I had a couple of light strikes yesterday. I was using "white box." Anyone else have a similar problem? I'm on a Taurus board often and I have read similar things there.

re Duluth Trading Co.--

I've ordered a few items from them in the past year or so. Shipment was prompt--very prompt--and on one item I had to return, I was some months out and there was no issue raised; full credit was promptly given.

Note that the company is out of Wisconsin, not Duluth, (MN). I'm guessing that some one with an MBA and a good business / marketing scheme bought the name and has proceeded to go to town in a pseudo-niche market. There seems to be a "hub" of clothing fulfillment out of that state (Land's End), and based on the promotional marketing from Duluth Trading, they are really responsive to marketing trends in their niche market.

When I bought their denim "presentation sports coat," it was because of the multiple pockets. At the time I got it, it was $20.00 or so higher than the current 'new' price. My impression was that they were then pushing the price as high as they could go--but that conflicted a bit with their "blue collar" niche. At the new price, it is attractive--and it will work just fine for concealed carry.

Last night I ordered out a couple of pair of the 5-pocket 'work jeans' to see how their pocket carry would be--look for a report in a week or so.

I did buy a pair of tac 5.1 jeans, but felt they were overpriced--or rather, I really have no need for a handcuff pocket, etc., etc. For Duluth Trading's jeans, if the company is as market-driven as I suspect it is, we (CC'ers) could see a whole new product line for our needs, I think.

Nematocyst

I saw that thread but didn't respond to it. I have six pistols, three of which are revolvers. They include a m19 with a 6" bbl, a 686 with a 4" bbl and the 642. The semi's are in .45, .32 and 9mm. I pocket the 642 for it's reliability, ease of concealment and accuracy. I don't think the 642 is as difficult to master as some people believe it to be.

I think you are absolutely right. I was a bottom feeder guy for 20-years - owning one revolver, (a Model 19) for a few weeks before dumping it off to buy another gun, (wish I still had that M19). When I purchased my 642CT I was literally back in the beginning of the learning curve. If you read my initial posts, I shot a tremendous amount and variety of ammunition out of this revolver over a short period of time. Within a few rounds I was easily hitting center mass from 0-15 feet and now that the trigger has worked in and my round count has gone skyward, I have become more confident in my abilities with this revolver than with any other handgun I own....

Commercial Message

Things are a bit quiet on the ole Club Thread (Summer Doldrums)?

Let me put forth a good deal on a LED flashlight.

http://www.amondotech.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=692

I bought one of these a few months back and indeed it is really nice.
Of course in the race for high output, this one is discounted since it is "only" three watts on/off/blink switch only.
It takes the 123A format Batteries, but you can get a 12 pack very reasonably. It is becoming a common battery format in high power LED lights.
Luxeon LED 75 Lumens comes with one battery. Built in belt clip. Front bezel as you can see when used as a weapon will do some damage.

P5210019.jpg

It's 3.5 inches long, 1 inch diameter.

It's a pretty good deal at $29 and makes a nice gift for someone who hasn't a clue about modern lights. Bright, small etc. I paid about $42 when I bought mine.

I have no affiliation with this company. They do have great battery and charger prices and have been good to deal with in my experience.

I just bought a similar flashlight & knife combo & Big 5 for $12. one of the 9 LED lights is burned out ans willgo back today. Nice little combo. Mine runds on 3 AAA batteries.

TwinCarry - Welcome to the 642 Club. Happy to have you with us. Nice pic's and some good looking gear. Does that 442 have a twin?

Thanks jt1,

You asked if my 442 had a twin. Well, I definately wanted the stainless this time but couldn't decide between the 642 or 36. Finally I decided on the 36 cuz I never owned a shiny nickel pistol before and plus the 442 would be my pocket carry due to weight and my new 36 will be my iwb.:)

Two questions:

One,

Does anyone have a link for speed strips? I can't seem to find one anywhere and I can't find the product in any local stores.

Two,

The "recoil pad" on the back of CT grips looks interesting...does it work? Does anyone else make grips w/ such a pad? (my Sheriff doesn't permit Lasers.)

Thanks in advance.

TwinCarry - That mod 36 should be very happy in your Sparks IWB. What holster are you using for pocket carry?

FireCaptDave - Midway has good service and has just about everything you might need. You might think about the CT's a little more if that's what you want. Maybe you can request a exception to policy or be allowed to use them switched off or without batteries ?

Hi FireCaptDave,

Regarding the "recoil pad", yes it does help! I tried both with the CT grips and the original grips and yes there's a significant difference on recoil in my opinion. Also, I don't know of any other grips that has the pad. Maybe other members do. Thanks.

jt1,

I use 2 pocket holsters for my 442. I just ordered my 3rd one - DeSantis Nemesis. I'm also tempted to get the Kramer version as well.

What the he$$ is wrong with me??? I would of been ok with just 1 holster but noooooooo.

Here's how my holster closet looks like....get the idea? I need help????

TwinCarry - Quite the collection you have going there, I see a few of my favorites, I really like the blackhawk speed classic. The Nemesis is a good one and I use it a fair amount, but the best I have found for pocket carry, and the "official" pocket holster of the 642 club is the Mika. If you search this thread you will see why a lot of folks like them. Heres Robert's site:

http://www.frontiernet.net/~akim/

PS - Sorry to be contributing to your "addiction :D" but this really is a holster worth having! And it looks like you have a few empty slots anyway.

jt1 - Oh man, I'm sure I'll be tempted with the Mika as well. I do know of Mika holsters, they're pretty popular in most forums. Hey, maybe you can help me, honestly I've been torn between the Mika and Kramer. The reason why (as of now) that I'm leaning towards Kramer is because in pictures you can see the holster is actually molded with the j-frame where as the Mike is literally just a pocket type holster for the j-frame. In this case I feel the Mika would be thicker or bulkier in pocket pants. Is my analysis correct? You guys are the expert and I'll trust your opinion. Thanks in advance.

You won't go wrong with the Mika. The round cut hides in the pocket like a dream, super comforable too, and draws like butter. Excelent holster at very reasonable price. Its even custom made for you with your name, date of manufacture and, Roberts signature on the inside. I see the holster being a 'pocket' ,as you describe, being a plus. Its profile does not 'print' while carrying, while being very secure. I don't have any experience with the Kramer, but I feel a holster with defined molding lines would be more prone to print while wearing thinner pants.

Howdy from Aggieland, TX!
I hang out over at the SigForum usually but I've decided I need me a pocket gun, and after discovering this club y'all have going on I decided I'd better jine-up over here too!

Can't apply for membership in 642 yet, but I'd like to consult the sages here on a few points, so as to know what's out there a little better. This thread is shweet- it's been very helpful in my decision-making to date! :)

Right now I'm lookin' at trading in my Glock 26 for a 442 and a Wild Bill pocket hoster. I've also picked out the shade of nail polish I'm gonna use on the front sight ;).

Now, the Spegels I've seen on here are simply gorgeous, but if they are what the stock boot grips are modeled on, I don't know if they're right for me. The Eagle SS grips look like they give you a little more under the trigger guard (what I want), a little more breadth.

Rosewood would be OK, but I'd like to get Eagle's ultra-ivory on this evil black revolver (maybe to scrimshaw). I emailed Eagle, but they said the SS grips are only available in Rosewood and Ebony. My question is, does anyone know another option I can explore for that ivory look? There's a picture on the website of some white grips titled "plastic" something-or-other, but I don't see that as a choice. They say they can do custom orders, maybe that's what I need to try?

I'll probably call them tomorrow but I wanted to ask y'all first. The person who replied to my email was somewhat less than helpful. Any of you have ivory (or just white) boot grips? From whom?
