The 642 club

I may be joining the club soon. I just got a 640 in .38 off of gunbroker, I imagine it will arrive in about a week. Heavier than a 642, but no lock, which is nice!

I also may be trading my Kahr MK9 for a 642 plus cash, I still have to see what the potential buyer is willing to offer. Of course it would be nice to have both a 642 and the 640, right now I think I would rather have just one and some more money in my bank account.

If I end up getting the 642, and decide to keep only one, what would you keep? The 640 with no lock, or the like new 642? (Yes I know, try both, keep the one I like more, yadda yadda yadda, that goes without saying.)

I'm thinking I won't be doing any pocket carry, so the 640 might be better...

Smoothing out

Hey There, After reading all these posts I'm like many of you....I had forgotten how cool revolvers can be and are. I found myself getting the S&W 686 SS, 4"brl out of the back of the safe and searching through the closets and dresser draws for a little Colt Fronteer Scout 22lr/mag that I had bought in 1966 right after I returned from VN. I hadn't had it out fired it in years. I took it and the 686 to the range and had a ball. That little Colt 22 spent many nights with me coon hunting in the woods of central IN. It was also bad news for tree rats, groundhogs and lots of bottles and cans.
The 686 is in my opinion one of the best modern day revolvers Smith has ever made and is definnetly a gun for all seasons.
Anyway I've got the bug and I purchased a 640 w/CT and love the little revolver. It's accurate, fun to shoot and with the extra 8 ounces of weight the SS J-Frame offers wont tear your hand off shooting 357's or 38+P's. I have been carrying it most of the time in my front pants pocket without any discomfort at all so still having the bug I decided to go a little lighter and try SW64209-07.gif the S&W 642 Airweight. A local gunshop had them for $375 so I got one. I haven't had the chance to go to the range yet, but have been dry firing it like crazy hoping to speed up smooth out the trigger before taking it to the range. It seems the trigger is coming along, but hasn't reached where the 640's trigger is yet. The 640's trigger it great after around 500 - 600 rounds and ?????number of dry fires.:D
Just my two cents,
JimK

A range buddy (also my immediate supervisor at work) has been looking for a pocket pistol for a while now and naturally, I suggested a 642. He said he wanted something with a hammer and this touched off a friendly debate. No need to go into specifics..we've all been there. He also has a growing family and his budget is such that he wants something used but in good shape. I go to the range quite a bit more than he does so I said I'd keep an eye out for something worth buying in the used case. I saw a used M36 in great shape and told him about it. Long story short.. we went to the shop last week and looked the 36 over then went into the range and shot my 642. We both used the 'rule of five' drill and at the end of the session, he said he was going to save a little more money for a new 642. A wise decision IMO..that's why he's the boss !! :neener:

Phydeaux642,

I too couldn't stop with just the 642 & bought a 442 to go with it. It's OK you're in mgood company.

So get this. :)

My wife who didn't much care for guns, became curious about them last June while camping. I brought along my 629 as I often do, she saw it in its holster next to me in the tent and asked if she could see it. I said “Sure!” I unloaded it and handed it over to her. “Humm” she said “Its kinda pretty, but too heavy” I say “Oh they make lighter ones” “They do?” she says. And with that the seed is planted! :D (shes my wife, I know how she operates)

A few weeks later she says she wants me to take her to the range. We go and rent a 3 inch sp 101 and she does great. She Was able to hit the black with every shot at 7 yards by the end of the range session.

A few days ago I show her the 642 and tell her a little about it. ;)

Yesterday she informs me that she wants to go shoot the 642 and if she likes it she want to buy one!! :D:D

Mwah mmwaah mmmwwwaaahahahahahahahahahha!!!!

I LOVE when a plan come together.

But really, What a gal huh? :)

Out of the clubhouse much these days ...

Tied up with a major :scrutiny: studio project.

Doesn't mean I've lost interest.

Good to see/read this thread is still kicking a..

I received my free range bag today from Smith & Wesson. It's not like my Tac Force bag but it's not too shabby for free. It will be a great "go-to-the range-packing-light" bag.

I also received my Mika pocket holster recently and got to try it out all day at work today. The holster is very well made and the gun slips from it easy enough, but I guess I just got used to my Safariland pocket holster. I will keep the Mika and possibly use it for left pocket carry when I need it since the Safariland is right pocket only. I will say that Robert Mika is a really nice guy and the product is top notch, but I just lean to the Safariland for some reason. The one thing the Mika has on the Safariland is how sticky the outside of the holster is. I'm not sure what the material is but it does stay in the pocket.

toasterlocker - Once you slide that 642 into you pocket, I'm betting you change your mind.

...that's why he's the boss !!

glassman - Just keep letting him think he's in charge!

Diggers - She sounds like a keeper for sure! But I'm wondering if it's your plan... or hers?

I eats teh babies . . . yum!

So this is how it all happened:

I wanted a carry piece. I like autoloaders. Needed something affordable, yet not laughable. Settled on a Springfield Armory 1911-A1 Mil-Spec parkerized. Local and closest (30 min. driving) gun store, $615, 4 months, can't get it in.

That was last year. Earlier this year, I moved. Same gun, new store, $660. One block away this time. Months go by, can't get it in. Decide to get revolver, Taurus 850 CIA all titanium, lightweight, just what I'm looking for. Months go by, can't get it in. Friends recommend the only place they go to (40 min. driving).

Order the 850, they say that gun isn't manufactured anymore, "no wonder the other dealer couldn't get it, maybe he should try calling next time." Friend recommends Smith, says the 642 is everything I was looking for anyway. Order that. Seven days, go to pick it up. $407 after background check and taxes. Un-freakin'-believable. Seven. Days. (So prior to this, is that what waiting periods feel like?)

The store that's only a block away still rocks for ammo and cleaning supplies. Glad I have friends that know their schtuff.

On another note, the friend that recommended the Smith hates Tauruses (Taurii?). But he has no personal experience with them. Another friend has a couple, and he likes them. Whether they are reliable or not seems a hot topic in the revolver forum. After the 850 incident, for the briefest of moments I was thinking Taurus 650. But $329 vs Smith's $379 price tag, it was a no-brainer. Maybe if I did get the 650 I'd be kicking my own rear-end: iffy reliability, and there's no 650 club to join. :) You'd rather have me here anyway! :D

I have been lurking around this thread for a while. I have a 442-1 and picked up a model 37 no dash with a pinned barrel today ($150!!). Can I join?

442

Well, I put money down on my 642's "brother from a different mother" today.:D What the heck am I grinning about? I'm thinking about buying a house but these silly gun dealers keep laying cool toys in my path. I think I need to go stand in a corner and think about what I've done.

Jeff, interesting story, well told.

CFH, let me try to understand: you're taking the 642 to the Olive Garden,
or a significant other? If the 642, what entre for .38 spl? :D

Goat, welcome in .

Good to read you've got your priorities straight.

This country is experiencing a mortgage crisis,
not a crisis in gun financing.

Did a search on this issue and didn't find what I was looking for so here we go: Do all 642's spark when you dry fire? If so, what causes it? Just curious. I did a Google and read that it may be caused by two different metals striking one another (i.e. steel firing pin and aluminum frame). Just curious and I apologize if this has been covered to the point of nausea.

TIA

Hello 642 members,
I just (finally) joined THR after lurking for quite some time.
I hope to be an official 642 member by the end of the month, since that's when the free range bag offer expires. I'll proudly post when it happens.
Keep up the great thread, it's awesome reading!!!

Tia,

My 642-2 does not spark when I dry fire it. Neither does any of my Sig Saurs or my beretta.

JT1,

I had also missed that thread too. Thanks for the link to the sparking 442 thread. We should probably modify the first post on this thread to start collecting FAQs about these little mules. Such things as which ammo, different grips, recommended holsters, and now even sparkings could go there.
