The bears are around this year

Bear meat can be very good, but be sure to treat it as real meat immediately. The black hide and high fat content can turn the meat quickly. Gut it soon, cool it and keep it clean. We normally cook it like pot roast, and it is very difficult to tell the difference with beef. Bear burger is very good.
Ya I know I need to get the hide off and meat on ice quick, not much worry during rifle but it's been hot here.k plan to have some coolers ready.

Bear are somewhat rare close to home. But in the mountains 30-40 miles NE of here they are numerous. We have a river that flows out of those mountains through town and every spring and summer there are some spotted within a 1/2 mile of the river. When mama bear decides it's to mate they chase off the 1-2 year old's that have been with mama since birth. They tend to follow the rivers for a while then head back to the mountains in late summer. One was spotted very close to home this year.

Today is archery opening day and bear as well as deer are legal in most of the state. I'll wait until the weekend is over before heading out though. I've taken one decent size bear in my life and wouldn't take another unless it were in a spot easy to get out. Or exceptionally large. I'm sure not going to pass up a deer waiting on a bear.

Ya they can be a pain to move, that 500 hundred pounder my buddy's son shot was a tuff drag. The foot of snow didn't help either.

45-70 or 7x57 are both good choices. I like the hammer effect of the 45-70:cool:
There's some things I have to do to the 45/70, it's still fine to hunt with. The old limbsaver recoil pad is like goo now, and the front sight bead got knocked out after it slid from me leaning it on the wall when moving guns around.

my ruger 7x57 I'm going to just do a quick load with the 175s for now.

I like the 175 grain load. I need to get some for my 7mm rem mag. Not that 140 grain won't do, it's a short range set up a heavy bullet fits the need.:D

My BIL sent me this one two years ago. They don’t put trash out until it’s about to get picked up and keep spray handy.

And probably don’t park with the windows down anymore.

Even the kids eating at the table outside know to put their back to the house, so they can keep their eyes out. Halfway through a hamburger and they grab their plate and say “time to go inside”, I ask why and they point to the bear that also smelled the food, heading our way.

Lol like to see the guys face when he opens that door haha.

I've not seen any bear out hunting, mostly during small game or bow. I think they start to den up before rifle season, tho the last few years it was hot followed by a good snow fall.

We always had a lot of bear around in PA. My house was 2/3rd of the way up a 1 mile steep hill from the Clarion River.
I had a 100yd long yard, nice flat yard, carved out of the woods behind my house with a spring in the back.
The bears would stop in my yard for a break and drink when they were making the trek up the hill to the acres and acres of huckleberry bushes that were ripe in late July.
They were always use to seeing me out in the yard and always looked to see where I was. One day my Mother in law was doing dishes at the kitchen sink and a bear come up on my back deck, stood up and looked in the window at her.
She screamed and ran for the living room.
The next day I took some goodies up into the woods on the trail they used and left them for the bears to eat to thank them.
That's the only time I ever fed them and it wasn't near my house either.
Gooood bear!
