We always had a lot of bear around in PA. My house was 2/3rd of the way up a 1 mile steep hill from the Clarion River.
I had a 100yd long yard, nice flat yard, carved out of the woods behind my house with a spring in the back.
The bears would stop in my yard for a break and drink when they were making the trek up the hill to the acres and acres of huckleberry bushes that were ripe in late July.
They were always use to seeing me out in the yard and always looked to see where I was. One day my Mother in law was doing dishes at the kitchen sink and a bear come up on my back deck, stood up and looked in the window at her.
She screamed and ran for the living room.
The next day I took some goodies up into the woods on the trail they used and left them for the bears to eat to thank them.
That's the only time I ever fed them and it wasn't near my house either.
Gooood bear!
