The original poster asked the basic questions -and sure got a variety of answers....
I'd refer him to McCracken's old thread near the top of the page "on fighting shotguns".... Yes, it's five pages but well worth a thorough read....

Of all the posts on this thread, post #5, and post #33 stand out for me. All of my experience with a defensive shotgun was in police work - where I pretty much had to learn on my own the stuff that you can gain reading McCracken and the two posts I've cited....
Like many who've actually carried and used a riot gun for some years I always kept mine as simple as possible - a four shot tube, a bead sight, 2 3/4" 00buck rounds... The only accessories I ever added were an elastic butt cuff with a few additional rounds and a sling, in case my hands were needed but I didn't want to drop my weapon on the ground.... On the street speed and maneuverability are life itself in a close quarters encounter. Hope I'm never needing that sort of skill ever again...

I have a 870 with staggered loads of military 00 buck and #4 buckshot and a light attached. Only ever had to use it on a raccoon so no complaints here.

Maverick 88 by Mossberg 18.5 barrel loaded with 00 Buck and butt stock holder with 5 more buck and 2 slugs. I got mine for $189.00 last month. It's a great gun and priced about the same as the Chinese knockoffs of the 870. It's assembled in Texas from U.S. and some Mexican parts. I'll take that quality over Chinese any day.

#1- Mossberg 590A1 18.5 barrel with 00B or #4. When being used as a woods/truck/camp/canoe gun it is usually loaded with Brenneke slugs.

#2- Remington 870 20G Youth, loaded with #3B or slugs, I think Remington is the flavor of the week.

.
The "Best HD Shotgun/Ammo Setup" for me? Because I live in a city with a zip code that is red-flagged for retail ammunition shipments I am at the mercy of the local retail ammunition market. There is rarely if ever any 12 ga #1 buck available. Fortunately, there are several flavors of double-aught buckshot loads available. I use the double-aught in a simple, lightweight, handy, bead-sight short-barreled Wingmaster.
