The "Cadillac" of Revolvers

The late great Major George C. Nonte, one of the premier gun writers of the 70s had taken a Model 27 to Iraq back in the day. His was fitted with a shoulder stock . He brought enough reloading gear to produce enough ammo for the trip. Kurdish tribesman were amazed at the power and accuracy of the .357. Rams were taken in the mountains. Major Nonte left the revolver with the kurds after departing for the states.

Sadly, we cannot go back in time to change the implements our early writer's used. Neither can we go back and order a RM in our name via the local hardware store. The odd stash of good safe queens has seemingly dried up. Users are commanding collector prices. I've had safe-queens and users - the latter just don't interest me - nothing looks worse to me than worn blueing on a revolver. I continued the 'storage' of the safe queens. Only when I bought new SS did I shoot with abandon, the easy cleanup being my friend. Oddly, my S&Ws, matte or gloss SS, must have been made when the 'sanding apes' were at lunch... and someone forgot the 'plastic', too. Oops, that blue plastic box!

Seriously, I love a good looking older firearm - be it an RM or a Brown Bess - in good shape - is neat to look at. Ratty, well, they are just an old gun. I'll take a modern SS S&W - and a modern bolt action rifle, too. We can agree to disagree on this, but before you wholesale dispatch me as a 'young loon', at least try a modern SS S&W - one with, gasp, MIM parts and the IL, before you blast me. And be nice - I'll hit 62 this summer and start collecting my Social Security - if anything is left!

Still, a nice 27 is a nice revolver, I'll grant you that. I like X8 moonclips...

I carry this one so I don't mess up the blue on the one above.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Risking being termed myopic, this is my impression of a true high end S&W .357 Magnum, a 2 5/8" PC627 UDR:

My 27-2 from many years ago with 5" barrel replacing original 6". Sent to S&W sometime in the 1970s and they did the switch.
Can't seem to navigate this photobucket maze since they messed it up. Just a bit of my 27 is visible.

Wow this thread started in 2010, but I've enjoyed the pictures.

I'd love a 3.5 inch M27, but I just have the lowly 4" M28.

My buddy just acquired the 8" Python for me. Now I'll have 2 Pythons, both Royal Blue, one in 4" and the other in 8".

The S&W Performance series 627 is a nice gun. I have it in a 5" barrel. I also have a Pro Series 627 4".

My Ruger GP100 is another favorite with a 6" barrel.

I like all brands of revolvers.

Colt refers to the Python as having been called the "Rolls-Royce of revolvers." I tend to agree.
A little wishful thinking on Colt's part, obviously marketing drivel written by someone who had no experience with Rolls-Royce.

A casual thought... a true 'Cadillac' would not have a stick shift - manual transmission. That would seem to leave out the SA crowd... bye bye Freedom Arms! Back to Colts, which aren't made anymore, or S&W's... or, gasp, Korths!

Rolls Royce never produced a decent car until the Germans bought them.
The point is that Rolls-Royce builds their cars by hand to the customer's specifications. Not unlike high end British game guns and rifles. Which would be a good analogy. You can compare a $50,000 bespoke Rigby or Bowen's #5 recreation to a bespoke car, not a $1200 Colt.

Ah...point well made

I concur

You can order certain versions of the CTS with a manual, six speed I believe. So SA's are in. :D

I have never seen a 27 before and I have been into colt and S&W revolvers since the late 60 early 70's. So I don't know how that one got past me. It is probablly the nicest looking one in S&W's 357 lineup. Good luck with it, some lucky kid is going to inherit it someday I would imagine.
