No, not a case study, one to keep it in.

I looked at the Tactical cases and although they are practical, they scream
RIFLE.

Auto Ordinance makes a violin case for the "Tommy Gun" that is way cool, but kind of pricey.

I thought about a hard case like a Pelican type, but too heavy and expensive.

I looked at guitar "gig bags", padded guitar cases, and I'm liking that.

Any more ideas? It's to haul the rifle to the range, not run through the woods.
I'd rather people didn't know what I was carrying.

check out your local pawn shop for old hard-side guitar cases...not only do they come in guitar shapes, but also big rectangular ones....
something with Fender or Gibson on it would definately scream musician, not gun case.
maybe even a garage sale golf bag with a few clubs in it??
separate the upper from the lower and put it in an athletic duffel bag.

lots of options...cheap and old might work best.

Keep in mind - people steal guitars too; it happened to my brother-in-law not 3 weeks ago while he was at a gas station.

try cabelas, as I was looking through their shooting magazine, I saw some decent cases. They just look like large, metal briefcases :D.
i wouldn't go with the guitar case, i mean really, if you walk onto a range w/ a guitar case, it isn't exactly inconspicuous.

m4joey94 is right. You'd have to have the '29 ford, fedora and pinstriped suit to go with it - otherwise you'd just look silly.:D

also, if you're looking to deter theft, do guitars get stolen less than guns?

the black eagle cases are rectangular and don't really scream gun.

Depending on the AR you have, it might fit in a tripod bag. Some are padded and are very non descript. Any store selling camera gear should have a selection of them.
One problem you might have trying to disguise a gun, is that whatever you disguise it as, it will still be an item desirable to a thief.

cat carrier

how about using a cat / small pet carrier...grunge it up

no thief would want to steal it or even open it up...

Uh, huh. And you could get a small battery powered barking Yorkshire Terrier to stand guard. Don't get the kind with eyes that light up 'cause then the thief will know it's fake.

Get a padded rifle case and a duffel/laundry bag. Put the gun case in the bag with a couple of towels, or some dirty laundry, and you're set.

That's what I plan on doing. Also, slap on a few Fender and Metallica and Led Zeppelin stickers to really sell the guitar look.

I think the plan was less theft deterrent and more so other folks don't know that you are walking out of your place with a gun. I live in an apartment building and thats my reason. The less that my neighbors know about the less that they can complain about.

Edit:
Also, remember that you can use a smaller case if you just pull the two pins. It might even fit in a large laptop case depending on stock type and barrel length.

Blackhawk makes a "Discreet Rifle Case" iirc. just a basic rectangular black ballistic-nylon case, but without all the outside pockets most of their cases have. most people, seeing that, are probably more likely to think "guitar" than "gun".

I think the i-Shot SERT is the granddaddy of discreet rifle cases; but Eagle makes one, as does Tactical Tailor.

Blackhawk makes a "Discreet Rifle Case" iirc.

And except for thr 4"x8" "BLACKHAWK!" label on the outside, it does look fairly discreet. I did a review of all the different cases that is here in the archives from back when I was shopping.
