DISCLAIMER: The following assumes a theoretical what-if worst-case scenario and is not advocating violence toward or overthrow of the U.S. Gov.

Is the Second Amendment currently a realistic deterrent to a potentially tyrannical government? Would civilian rifles and pistols stop a government armed with rockets, missiles, tanks, and satellites? Personally, I think the notion is fantastically unrealistic although I agree with its premise.

While the argument of successful insurgencies is used on Internet forums prolifically, I never see mention of the fantastic numbers of dead insurgents involved in bringing this about. Our military is very good at what it does. American citizens, on the other hand, probably not so focused or determined. In fact, I wonder if there is any government action that could persuade today's citizen to protest, let alone revolt against authority. It doesn't help matters much that a significant portion of gun owners are staunch authoritarians more likely to side with the police and military during civil disturbance.

If you doubt this, consider the recent thread discussing Katrina and "looting". A surprising number of members would fire on their fellow citizens if they perceived a person hunting up a can of beans to feed his children to be a ... 'gasp'... "looter".

Moreover, would American troops have any hesitancy in pulling the trigger on American citizens? My personal belief is that they would follow orders since that's what they've been conditioned to do under the threat of severe punishment for disobeying. I'm certain they would be indoctrinated to believe that the citizen freedom fighters were nothing more than "terrorists", the bogeyman du jour.

What say you?

P.S. if this has been discussed before, you don't have to post here. I reserve the right to hold my very own discussion on the topic.

I suggest you hold it elsewhere. It's been done to death, it is counter-productive to the mission of the High Road, and frankly, always ends in a lot of mindless internet chest-thumping.
