For all who may have been watching, with baited or held breath, the suspense is over. Senate Bill 1805, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, has been soundly defeated 90 to 8. But only after several very serious (and harmfull) amendments had been "allowed" to pass. Feinsteins, AWB renewal and McCains gun show loophole bill, to name the two worst ones.

The 8 senators that voted "Yea" for the now anti-gun Bill were:

Lugar (R-IN)
McCain (R-AZ)
Voinovich (R-OH)

Breaux (D-LA)
Daschle (D-SD)
Lieberman (D-CT)
Lincoln (D-AR)
Pryor (D-AR)

At the start of the Debate last week, many people were calling for Craig's head. By the time it was over, most of these detractors saw a performance that rivaled anything the Founders ever said about the 2nd amendment. Yet, still there were some detractors, who say that Craig could have done this all differently. That we could have won. Well, let me give you my opinion of what The Very Honorable Senator from Idaho has done, and then you be the judge.

Senator Craig, with the help of Senator Sessions, have just completed a very skillfull game of poker, the likes of which have seldom been watched by the voting public. What cunning strategey this was!

They both know that a large segment of the gun community has been watching this whole thing, and they have exposed every single Republican turncoat in the senate. 12 Republicans that could have turned the tide on each and every POS amendment that the gun-grabbers offered. Craig also now knows for sure what anti-gun Bills the Dems may offer; what form they will take and where their backing is. The votes are now on record for any and all to see.

note: How many of these Republicans are up for re-election? How many will you help to defeat?

Republicans that Voted to add the the AWB Renewal Amendment Yeas=52 Nays=47:

Chafee (R-RI), Yea
Collins (R-ME), Yea
DeWine (R-OH), Yea
Fitzgerald (R-IL)
Gregg (R-NH), Yea
Lugar (R-IN), Yea
Smith (R-OR), Yea
Snowe (R-ME), Yea
Voinovich (R-OH), Yea
Warner (R-VA), Yea

Republicans that voted to add the Gunshow Loophole Amendment Yeas=53 Nays=46:

Chafee (R-RI)
DeWine (R-OH)
Fitzgerald (R-IL)
Hagel (R-NE)
Lugar (R-IN)
McCain (R-AZ)
Voinovich (R-OH)
Warner (R-VA)

All action and the recorded votes on this can be seen here.

Politicians being the kind of creatures that they generally are, absolutely hate to have their votes recorded! In this, Craig now knows who he absolutely has to muscle if he decides to bring forth S659 or S1806... Remember, they are still in the wings and that the House Bill has still been passed. It will be good until this legislative session ends.

Despite all the moans and groans and hip-horays I've read, the game isn't necessarily over. S659 can be brought out of committee and it can be brought out as a simple up/down vote, if Craig can find what it will take to muscle those 10 turncoats. S1806 can be used as an amendment to any other "must pass" bill later on, again, if they can get those 10 to stay with the pack. At least, these are some of the scenarios that Craig's office is reporting.

Now, after all has been said and done, what exactly happened the past 3 or 4 days? We (those of us that were watching either the actual CSPAN2 debates or were reading the blow by blow accounts as it happened on any number of gun boards...excepting TAC...sigh) got active and called, faxed, emailed all our senators and the NRA. WE made our thoughts known. Whatever anyone else may say, WE made the differnece today. The NRA has admitted that it took over 4100 calls against this Bill in the final couple of hours of debate and through every Senators IPad, they emialed that they vote "No" on the final vote; The 800 switchboard into the senate was overloaded as was the (202) switchboard. Many senators own numbers were shut down due to the overwhelming numbers of people calling in for Support for a CLEAN bill and to dunk what S1805 had become.

And now the congress critters know that they can no longer hide in the dark and make backroom deals that we won't find out about, before they can vote their Bills into law!

Posters NOte: As of 0100 hoursa, 3 March, at the Senate Roll Call Vote Site, the Frist Amendment, noted as Amendment # 2625, shows "Roll Call Vote Does Not Exist". This does not seem to pass the smell test, though I might be overly suspicous, who knows. In general, the above noted materials name names. Some of these clowns are up for re-election in November, and there might be primary battles still to be fought in some cases. Should readers have the opportunity to "return favors rendered", they should keep the lists of names handy, as well as sharing them with friends who might not be "computer literate", or who don't use the things.
