Thanks to loonwulf and his buddy ed, this is a few months in the making by now and the wait is worth it. I wanted to give a Montana sling a try, I always liked the butler creek quick adjust nylon slings. But they don't look proper on a older classic rifle.

So when I mentioned I wanted a Montana loonwulf stepped up and said his buddy does leather work, so I did some measuring and came up with a number to give ed a idea. This sling is like 4-5 inches longer them Montana's long sling, I am big and I like a longer sling to Be able to have the rifle across my back to have use of my hands. I'll have to look up what the length was in are pm.

this is for the pre-64 Winchester model 70 270win I picked a few months ago, it has one inch sling loops. With the Montana you only need 2 Chicago screws, four of the sling is for some detachable uncle Mike's or similar. It's actually a very simple idea, there not hardware other then the 2 Chicago screws. Two slits are cut about 1/4-3/8 wide on one end there staggered about the same as the width, the cuts are about 3.5" long. The end is then Folded over and each loop made is twisted about 90° and the other end is passed through the turned loops. This makes kinda a knot that will slip if you push it up or down the sling, but holds when on the shoulder.

I told loonwulf to tell ed what rifle it will be on and that it's a 1950 rifle. We had full freedom on what to do to the sling, I asked for the Montana knot and if he had walnut stain I'd like that.

last week the sling arrived and I'm very happy how it looks, I had to figure out how to do the knot and get the sling on the proper was, which is not my strong suit lol. I had to think a few minutes how the knot is and had to break in the leather some. Once on the rifle it looked even better then I hoped. Ed could have done more thing like a border but this looks right with the rifle. It feels very nice on the shoulder and fully extended I still have more room with a t-shirt on when across my back.

I'll post some pictures for online how these look not completed.

Again big thanks to loonwulf and ed.

Heres a picture from right before i sent it....

I thought we were doing a border on it, but i might have forgotten to ask Ed to do it..... that's something id do....

Once he gets all his stuff situated and is doing more leather projects again, im probably going to ask him to make one for me as well.

Looks good. I like the Montana sling and have a couple. I ordered the 1 1/4" version first and a year or 2 later opted for the 1" version. Overall I like the narrower version a little better, but the wider version works better on heavier rifles. One of them is always on the rifle I hunt with.

Technically you have it mounted correctly with the loop toward the forend to be used as a shooting aid. But most of the time I reverse mine so I have the rough side of the leather on my shoulder. It is less likely to slide off that way.

Ya they can be used either way, my name if upright this way lol. You can separate the two top and spread the weight around, some of the rough side grabs to.

Curious. How long is the leather on that sling?
Can't remember exactly how long we figured, think we said 4 inches more then the Montana long one then I added even more for when I've got a jacket on.

I just measured it not perfect since the knot takes up length but I know it's about 3 inches. I got 63" overall .
