really hot place
I recently purchased my first bp revolver a Pietta 1860 (still waiting on the mail man), but unfortunately the holy black is more like the holy grail around here, the only place Iv heard of carrying any is bass pro and it's $20+ for a pound of goex 3f.
I know there's ppl that sell at the bp shoots and events any one know of any up coming ones around phoenix? Or any other shops that carry the real deal?
( I don't want to order online as I will only have the one for a while and won't need enough powder to make the hazmat worth it)

Get with some cowboy shooters who shoot black powder. (go to a CAS match & talk to them)
Go in with them on a case order.
You buy, maybe 5 pounds, 2 other guys buy 10 pounds each.
You split the hazmat & get your powder at a lower cost.

$20 ish a pound isn't bad, IMO.
About average for a can at a store and, trouble is, you just can't find real black powder at your average store. :(
For a pistol one or two cans will provide many shots and smoke to enjoy. :)

The NMLRA Western National shoot won't be till February but you should be able to get a better deal there..?

Make your own and enjoy your sport that much more. Simple build and I now produce a pound for just over $3.

Either go to a CAS/muzzleloading match or make your own. That's probably the most economical way to do it.

You CAN order for online website like Power Inc. but be prepared to make a large order in excess of 15 lbs if you expect to save money this way. You can also try and get others to pitch in witho you on the order and split the cost, and the cans of Holy Black.

Around here the local Bass Pro has GOEX FFFG for $24+ a can before taxes, needless to say I do not go there. That is called "price gouging" in my dictionary. Instead, I go to Graf and Sons retail location which is not far off I-70 when I take trips back east. They sell the same powder for $15 a can or so. I call in the order ahead of time and pick it up at there warehouse. It's cheaper to buy and shoot that than it is to get Pyrodex, so needless to say I always go real Holy Black when I can.

Good luck!

I get mine at Thunderbird Cartridge Company Inc.
7215 W Southern Ave, Laveen AZ
602-237-3823

Just call before you go, not always there, Swiss for about $24, Goex about $21

PM me if you need more info.

Get a hold of Steve Rhodes at Arizona Sharpshooters.com. He's the bpcr match director at Ben Avery. He'll be able to point you to blackpowder.
You can always order it in from Powder Inc, Grafs and Buffalo Arms.

$20 aint bad. Your first BP Gun so one pound will actually last longer than you think it will.
Subs are easier to find but it will still cost about $20 + or - $3.
Welcome to our passion.

Consider yourself lucky. I picked up a can of Pyrodex P yesterday for 25 and change, 28 and change with tax. Stuff has gone up. Folks here have told me of black at a gun shop in San Antonio, but it's about a 140 mile drive to that side of town one way, so figure the gas. It'll have to be done when we're going that direction anyway to make any sense. I'll shoot the subs until I can get to SA.

According to my brother, who is now loading/shooting BP for himself and his wife in SASS; his usual source is the aforementioned gentleman at Ben Avery.

Haven't been to Ben Avery yet myself; but Don says that somebody usually has some for sale at the match here in Yuma. Had to work over that particular weekend last year; as soon as I learn the 2015 date I'll be finagling to keep my schedule clear. Until then, I guess I'll have to stay content with 777.
My son and I got to go out for the match once 2-3 years back and had a great time; but I wasn't expecting to be buying anything, so not much play-money in the old wallet.

Don may not be in shooting condition by then (had rotator cuff surgery 3 days ago, and it was pretty extensive); but Jamie might be shooting, keeping up her points standings.

Yes, it was fun to watch; no I wasn't "bitten by the bug". But hey, if I can finally get my hands on some real stuff, it will be worth it.

Just checked legendary they don't carry black and the reviews of them arnt even warm let alone glowing which is disappointing as there fairly close to me

$20 is great for real BP. I pay $23 for Pyrodex and dealers here in calif where I live have no intentions of participating in the building of structures required for BP storage. Evidentlly there are different rules for pyrodex?
Grab 2# and be happy you can get it!

yup pyrodex is a propellant where bp is a explosive.
I ended up getting two cans of some German bp that I can't spell with out it in front of me for about $17 a pound.
(i didn't specify beyond 3f and that's what they brought up)

davepool is right on TCCI, it is where I go for powder.

As far as legendary guns goes despite their reviews it is a nice shop, not the best service but a great selection.

As mentioned before, Pyrodex (and all other black powder substitutes) are classified as propellents and only require a FFL for reselling it. Black powder, (GOEX, Schuetzen, Swiss, Kik, etc.), is classified as a low explosive and requires for resale, a dealer who has an F.E.L. (Federal Explosives License).

This license requires more than that of an FFL, in the eyes of the ATFE. Storefront, proper magazine approved by ATFE Agent, distance of magazine from any highway and occupied buildings, burglar alarm system, record keeping on daily/weekly basis AND surprise visits by ATFE inspectors every few years.

In addition, the local fire department and or city/county government may want one to have an additional license and be inspected for safety concerns. They may not want that business inside their boundaries.

My city fire marshall wanted me to refrain from selling black powder because the store's exit door swung out instead of swinging in from the outside, which means the hinges would be on the outside, too; just easier to break in the store. I had to go all the way to the state fire marshall to get an exemption, just to stay in the black powder business.

The price you pay from Powder, Inc is about the same cost to a FEL dealer. If it is shipped UPS to him, he pays the shipping charges & HazMat @ $27 per order, so he has to spread the expenses over each powder order.

A FEL dealer had to pay $200 for the initial license from ATFE and renewal every three(?) years was $100(?), so he has to figure that into the cost of each can of powder.

A reasonable markup for a dealer (not big-box stores) to sell reloading/muzzleloading components is 33% to cover overhead & profit. If it cost $17.00 wholesale, retail might be $22.95, not including state sales tax.

As a former FEL for 45 years, I can tell you, especially since 9/11 & more so, the Boston Marathon bombing, being a black powder dealer has one walking on eggshells at times. Between those surprise visits, the local Fire Marshall (who wants to be Fire Chief), your insurance company covering the liability, and the press who calls after a bombing incident asking, "how does it feel to be a contributing party to this event", its no wonder why retail stores prefer not to carry real black powder.

I'm not trying to defend $27 for a pound of black powder. I just want the shooting public to understand why there are so few retail outlets for buying black powder. Stores have to be profitable or discontinue the product.

Now, I pool an order with members of my gun club to ship 50 lbs of black powder from Powder, Inc. GOEX is $16 approx., including shipping & HazMat on a 25 lb case. A 10 lb case drops it down to $19.05/lb including ship & HazMat. Minimum order is a 5 lb case, GOEX will then be $24.40/lb including ship & HazMat.

Give Jerry a call @ 877-833-1799.

Yup tcci is were I went and got the schuetzen. Very cool place love all the old machinery and cars around it particularly that rambler. Just be sure to call a head let them know your coming down and what you want exactly so they can have it ready for you (it may be a bit of a wait other wise)

Good deal, glad you found it, not the easiest place to find, drove by it three times the first time i went out there

I went through the same thing you did when i started shooting BP 3 years ago. For obvious reasons no regular gunshops carried real black and even after i found TCCI, it was difficult to hook up with them.

Check out the NMLRA, i competed in the Western National Shoot last march at Ben Avery, next one is march 2015. You'll meet lots of good people who will go out of their way to help you. They will stand in line to offer you tips and help you become a better BP shooter.

Be careful with this though, i started just like you, a cap and ball revolver. I now have 7 rifles, 6 pistols, one i built from a kit and working on another. I won the In-Line bench rest aggregate in march this year and am working on a load now that i will break the record in that class with next year :)
